It's interesting this talk about 'terminology' and 'fundamentals' that Simpson talks about, especially in light of one of the new draftees remarking that he had to learn 60 or so new sets of terminology when he came to the club.

In his latest press conference he mentions that a lot of time which would normally be used for match simulations and scenarios was required for educational processes.

I wonder if it's unique to Simpson (i.e. he intellectualises footy more than others), or if our players were just really behind the 8-ball when it came to tactics and strategies before he arrived? Did Woosha over-simplify the game and basically just hope that one of Naitanui, Judd or Stenglein got the footy?

Thoughts?

Not sure I would use Stenglein in that role as he was more of a stopper, shepherder for more skilled players. Don't get me wrong he played his role but you wouldn't want to be relying on him to win a game.

For mine our game winners also included Kerr and Cousins during Woosha's time.

For me Woosha was a limited in his approach to coaching - I am not sure his match day book would have been overly thick or ground breaking.

Simpson looks like having a different coaching approach, which I like.

I don't think it's unique to Simpson, though it is new to the game. It's starting to filter through to lower levels of football, though they're simplified.

From a tactical perspective having a more scientific meaning for specific terminology reduces the likelihood of your structures breaking down due to a player misinterpreting a coaches directions and allow for the players to adjust collectively to changing game conditions.

Fundamentals for me sounds like basic skill execution as well as more structural set ups and discipline related problems that might creep into the game.

Any news for Lucas from track watchers?

Always very crisp at Carlton through stationary drills but just didn't like pushing himself too hard.

Seemed to be fairly involved when I watched the open training session on Monday, missed a few targets under pressure but he wasn't Robinson Crusoe there. The other players seemed to have warmed to him.

I thought he looked great in the bigger drills, a bit soft in the contested stuff.

Thanks guys. Lucas just lost all will to play and that was no more evident than for having seen him playing in the VFL.

What I meant about Lucas, is that at training he was very much a one-touch player showing great hand to eye co-ordination but come game day that had all but disappeared. I would be happy for him to succeed at W.C. because some of his problems weren't necessarily directly football related.

No one (on this board) is expecting much.

I think he will play well in the WAFL. If his form warrants it (and he can get an upgrade - he's probably behind Newman should we get an LTI) I'm not sure how he would go.

Robinson Caruso Carlton Pun ..

Hey Guys,

Pardon the intrusion, but I was just curious as to what group Jeremy McGovern has been training with this pre-season. Has he been training more with the defenders or forwards? Where do you see him playing the majority of his football in 2015? Thanks in advance.

I think he'll play mainly down back but will swing forward on occasion.

He'll need to get fit first... Last year it was a bit of a spare tyre issue, this year it seems he's had an interrupted prep. A massive talent who has shown he can attain game fitness even with a slow pre-season, so look out!

Haha yeah Stenglein and Judd were an obscure reference to some commentator who recently assumed he had only just retired. I knew it was too subtle.

Now that he's playing for his preferred club I can see many of these psychological problems being rectified.

If he's not elevated to the senior list by season's end, I'm tearing up my membership.*

Is it the same issue he had during last season ? If so makes you wonder about our fitness staff

He was having problems with his foot so not sure if it is a new injury or it is all related. I do know he was told that when he went to Europe for a holiday he was told to wear his moon for at all times so i do hope Darling stuck to his program and worse it at all times.
