what happens if noboody under 150k (besides Brown) is named? are we all going mid price madness and having Clancee at D6? lol
if that's the case, I'm going Newnes at D5
Clancee at D6 would be an improvement on my current backline

not looking good atm :( we haven't even seen McKenzie yet, Goddard is far from a lock, Saad might not get elevated, Bombers Edwards is unknown, Hamling fighting for a spot with 2 senior players, no way we'll see Maynard play early, looks like Nathan Brown is the only rookie priced lock

Newnes at D5? He's my D3 currently...

Newnes is currently my D1!! Haha

Not liking any of the top priced Defenders this year - no one is screaming out "pick me".

Have to say might be a mid priced shamozzle in the backline this year and make it up over the other 3 lines.
+1.

Newnes is my D2 atm with either Heater or Birch to be my D1.

Reckon people are falling for the mid-price trap for defenders this season, more than one is risking it.
I would normally agree with you on this. But I think there are almost 2 categories for backline mid-pricers this year. One being guys who are closing in on being def premo's but haven't quite proven it yet (Docherty, Newnes, Jaensch etc.). And the second being guys who are under-priced due to injury (Ibbotson, Pearce, Henderson etc.). I think I'll be taking one from each category. Not saying I'm pleased about it mind you...

so are you saying that Simon White at D4 probably isnt the way to go?

How are you structuring your backline if you dont mind me asking.

I tend to agree with you, but it's getting hard to avoid midpricers considering the lack of viable premos and rookies.

For me: 1x 500k+, 2x 450k-499k, 2x 400k-449k + 3 rookies

I would like that myself, but would have to sacrifice a player elsewhere that im alot more comfortable in.

Currently running with 2 x 450K-499K, 1 x 400K-499K, 1 x 300K-400K, 1 x 200K-300K + 3 Rookies.

But im very uneasy about that set up.

gibson higgins shephard geary pearce leslie dick saad.

im after price rises in defense. think id prefer to do more trades here this year and pick who ever is playing well. 130k remaining so leslie can become macmillan if no other cover presents itself.
if bombers are rubbed out 1st 6months of year will go ashby.

Only problem with that is that your other 3 areas are more than likely your money making areas as well, so if you fill them with to many higher priced players you lose your cash generation, if the defensive rookies/mid pricers don't fire.

Can't see too much money being made in the Ruck department.

As for the other lines going 4 - 0 - 4 in Fwds and either 5 - 0 - 6 or 6 - 0 - 5 in the mids.
Plenty of cash to be made with 9 or 10 rookies there.

Let me be clear and state that by mid-pricer I'm talking in the $200k to $400k range, anything above $400k I am not considering mid-price even if some of the players in that price range could technically be considered "mid-price" on other lines and some players (Newnes, Docherty) whilst never having been premiums, are probably too expensive for mid-price consideration. In terms of price spread of defenders, I think $400k is a decent enough demarcation.

I have done a bit of research for defenders priced within certain price ranges and have determined that the $200k to $400k range and more specifically, the $300k to $400k range is a minefield for producing premiums. The number of defenders that become premiums from starting within this price range are very, very low and whilst this season, the defensive premium stocks are somewhat diminished, the odds of $300k to $400k players breaking out into keeper territory are stacked against us.

In terms of players within the $200k to $300k range, I think there is a good reason to invest in one of these players due to the lack of any proper defensive rookies (at this stage). I am not expecting anyone in this range to become a keeper but what a player in this range should be expected to do is to buy you time, they wont be making you as much money as a rookie but should score you more per week, meaning you can keep them for longer before upgrading them. I think paying more than $300k for a player who in all probability, will require an upgrade is not a sound investment, anything low $200k to around $270k can justify taking such an approach.

Thus, to answer your question, I have a set of $400k+ players, possibly a $200k odd player and three rookies right now. There are plenty of forward rookies to make funds available for a backline as such, I am not happy about it however I am minimising the potential for crap mid-pricers (Suckling types from last season for example) proving to be major dissappointments and requiring upgrades.

Yeah that's not to bad a structure, i guess i was picturing all defenders around the 2-300k mark and than 7 or 8 premo mids haha

I am going cheap in defence 2-5-4 is my strategy and happy to go with some midpriced defenders which allows me to beef up my midfield. I figure that a lot of premium priced defenders could drop as much as low 400s this year and if you've got a midpricer whos not cutting it the upgrade wont cost you much compared to what it might cost to upgrade midfielders. I am happy to put up with some midpricers scores for the first 8 or so rounds before trying to upgrade defenders

I'm no Jock Reynolds  or supercoach God, but here's my list of
mid priced players who actually have a chance of averaging close to 90 (and are well and truly best 21)

300-400k
KK
- marked for more wing time, should increase his average disposal count, he'll get very little attention running of half back with Malceski, Harbrow and McKenzie around him
Pittard - being shaped into the Malceski/Birchall/etc for Port, had some shockers last year yet didn't get dropped so that shows faith, preseason form looks great, looks bigger, disposal efficiency was a concern last season though :thumbsu::thumbsu::thumbsu: my tip for king of the 200-400k mid price boys come seasons end
Ibbotson - had that 90+ season taking marks galore, injury concerns may be a problem
Sutcliffe - marked for more mid and wing time, will also provide run off half back, not sure if he has ability to be a great supercoach scoring player though
Langdon - Toovey, Reid, Frost, Keeffe and Williams all fit and will match up on forwards, Langdon COULD be our loose player off half back = marks and kicks galore, how Pies back 6 will shape up is unknown though
400-450k
Newnes
- as we've all heard more mid time imminent, he'll increase his disposal count this year so that will give him a few extra points per week
Docherty - same as Newnes, disposals per game will increase

Geary, Clancee, Henderson, etc will struggle to hold an average of 60-80 and some will struggle to hold a spot in the team
those expecting a 100+ average from the mid price players they select should just delete their teams lol

Thoughts on Hurn?

Didn't look great in the NAB cup, but has shown in the past he is capable.

Is one I am considering, but would need to see a better showing from him than thus far.
