It's Bittorrent, it seeds even when you haven't got the complete download. Sounds like it's targeted at people who had it active over certain dates, most likely from one or two public trackers. I got it off a small private tracker so in theory I should be fine, but I think it's time to look at VPN or a seedbox

Well - Looks like everyone in Australia will be looking to get VPN’s then.

I think they go after IINET as they are the only ones that have told the Government they are not going to bend to there Will.

They're probably going after iiNet because they're the biggest and would have the most people who use things like Bittorrent, Telstra is huge but their primary market would be older people who don't care about it............ plus they're probably a bit of a protected species in this country.

Won't happen, centralizing the content makes it easier for the owners to be prosecuted (just look at Kim Dotcom). To be fair I'm not too fussed about "better", downloading things has become too dumbed down which has made people focus on it more.

Usenet isn't that expensive, but apparently it's turned to shit recently with a lot of malware floating around.

You MAY get one, it depends on what they class as distributing the file. It was also for a certain period of time, so if it was outside of that you might be safe...... for now.

I ended up pulling the trigger and grabbing an offshore box, may as well minimize the risk.

My Family Heard of this and We are talking about getting one as just to make it bit safer then just leaving it as the Government is really Cracking down on it.

Not Sure but Sadly I think there is a Good Chance they can see and look at all the MetaData that has been help by the IP and could be used against you.

Though don’t quote me on that

I imagine Netflix will get a spike in subs after this. Also, this kind of leaves room for other companies that stream content to pop up; I guess the capital needed is gonna be huge though so we'll probably see already established corporations dip their toes into streaming services.

Unlikely, Dallas Buyers Club LLC hired people to actively track people downloading/seeding the movie, I don't think other licence holders would have bothered with it back then, but now that the precedent has been set it may become more common. Data retention has also been standardized across Australia which gives them a set period where they KNOW they'll be able to get customer details and take action, if you're using public trackers I'd suggest you look at other solutions.

If you do get busted it shouldn't be the end of the world, this guy got away with a $500 fine after getting chased for $5000 initially. I think companies have learnt that chasing the public for thousands and thousands of dollars over this kind of shit just isn't going to happen, even if they win they'll never see the money.

We don't need more companies who stream data, we really need the existing ones to consolidate and expand. No one is going to buy 5 or 6 $10-$20 subscriptions so that they have all their favourite shows available, bringing in more services who will all have their own exclusive content is counter-productive.

I agree with you to a point, but as it is a new field you can pretty much guarantee there will be others entering the arena.
