AFL Club
Hawthorn
I've been going through a tough time for a while now.... My question is does the hawthorn footy club inspire you sometimes... I find whenever things are at there lowest I think back to how tough 2014 was for the club with all the injuries suspensions etc and how they overcame it to clinch B2B...I even think if 88/89 B2B that was tough too for them... And also the merger stuff that was backs to the wall stuff.. Nothing is ever easy...

Hawthorn plays a large and constant part in my life. I tend to draw on those around me for strength if I need to, but I do take a lot of joy from the footy club.

I hope things look up for you. You should never be afraid to ask those close to you for support when you need it.

Sometimes when there's nothing else to lay your hat on and you're looking for something... anything... for 'inspiration', I lean on the HFC for support. They are the chosen gladiators representing you in battle at a time when society has supposedly evolved beyond blood sport and now I realise I'm sounding like a commercial for Game of Thrones so I'll wrap it up there. o_O

Hawthorn FC are a constant source of inspiration to me. The past 8 years have seen plenty of ups and downs for me personally, but when I watch the hawks play, my worries are gone if only for a few hours. Its been a great time to be a hawks supporter.

Well done for sharing, and I hope things start to move in the right direction for you :$

I am not sure if they are an inspiration, but they are a constant source of enjoyment and a release from a pretty hectic working life.
I am very thankful for having chosen them as my club to support.

Hope things improve for you bigton08 :thumbsu:

As players, they leave me in awe of what they can do. As a club, they give me severall things. Closeness with my old man (the bloke who introduced me to footy and the Hawks). Inspiration to keep soldiering on through adversity. Enjoyment in watching them. Admiration in their dealings and activities within the club. What I love most, however, is being able to park myself in front of the telly and watch a club I admire and support battle it out against seventeen other clubs and (recently) mostly come out on top. It's a great way to just switch off the outside world and just focus on one thing. Footy remains one of only three things where I can do that. (The others being exercise and fishing).

So yes, Hawthorn inspires me. It's a big part of my life and I would have it remain so (despite the opposition by the wife and WA-team-supporting friends  ).

I have a very full life, and plenty to occupy my time and my thoughts. But the strength and success of the Hawks is a constant source of strength and inspiration to me. Went to my first game in 1975, and they have been a massive presence in my life ever since.

27 years supporting now wow and I got to two winning grand finals live couldn't ask for anything better!! Except a three peat lol

Life is not easy, especially these last few years, so yes the club, the boys and the sport inspire me. Doesn't need to be a big inspiration but enough to keep fighting the good fight. Grateful I fell into the hawks nest, thanks to my Prep teacher Pam Maginness.

I know things will get easier for you bigton08, as they must for me & all who battle through times in life.

No, you've nailed competitive sport and fans, perfectly.

If you look at Desmond Morris' books (e.g The Soccer Tribe), it is totally about the players being our champions (in the Oberyn Martell/Tyrion Lannister kind of way)

They do our combat for us, while we do our wage-slave drudgerous consumer/producer thing ;)

Worth finding Soccer Tribe for a read...whether you like soccer or not...

Dear bigton08,

From about 1996 to about 2005, things were only OK for me. And the Hawks were terrible.

But I kept showing up. I didn't ask anything of the players. The club didn't ask anything of me. But I kept showing up. And between the merger game when Piggy dragged us into the finals, and 2005 when we saw the first flickers of success and signs of competitiveness, there were ups and downs. Mostly downs, but still. But I kept showing up.

It's all you can do, really. Keep showing up. The players will keep playing.

And I'm going to keep showing up.

Good luck.

I'm not sure about being inspired, but they've made the crap times in my life over the last 10 years a lot more enjoyable than they would have if they were crap as well.

While they don't inspire me as such, what i can say is following the Hawks is like a mood altering drug, who depending on the result will have too much effect in shaping not only my day, but week and even months. I def invest way too much time in following this club. My quality of life is in direct proportion to our success. Given I started following in 1983, however, I've had a pretty blessed life!

Wouldn't say an inspiration, but I certainly love watching the Hawks to escape a bit of reality.

Hope things turn out alright for you.

Yeah things have been rough I must admit when the hawks win I feel things aren't so bad, I know there will be inevitable losses but hey I supported the club through some dark time in the 90's I've seen them lose plenty of games..I dunno the club has this never say die attitude and I guess when I'm going through some tough stuff I think to myself if those bloody 22 hawks on the field can achieve B2B in a tough comp then I can get through my shit too....there B2B in 88/89 was like that too...that's when I started barracking for them all those years ago:)

I'm sorry, but if it's about soccer, it's definitely not about the players being our champions, unless you want your champions to roll around on the ground like Michael J Fox on fire. There is no sport further from the jousting circuit than soccer. Jousting was a sport focussed on honour and integrity, Soccer is an entire code of Essendons with a round ball and a goalie.

Hawks have always done it 'The Hard Way', which is why that catch-phrase has become a motto for our club.....Everyone gets carried away by our success of late in winning a Premiership every 4 years over the past 44 of them....But Remember.....THAT success was built upon 37 years of heart-break, blood, sweat & toil.

Even our current success was built upon the ashes of the threat of a merger & the impending threat of the death of our club.....What was once doom & gloom has given birth to another Golden-era of Blue skies & wonder!

I guess what I'm trying to say is, that beneath all the shit lies the GOLD!....If you stay with it long enuf, then something magical will come of it!

Our club's history is a brilliant metaphor & lesson for Life!

I'm not religious so for me the Hawks are as close to a religion as I'll ever get. I go to every Melbourne game I can make it too and win, lose or draw it's always good to watch the team play and slip away from any other problems in life for a few hours.
