The problem is that when you target proven quality you have give up significant assets in order to obtain them and are essentially chucking all your eggs in one basket. So for it too work out you need to have enough of the foundations set in place so that it doesn't backfire like Judd and Carlton otherwise you become a treadmill team whereby you improve to a certain point but never my enough to take you to any glory. Which I think as a club we are now at that stage and were bordering on it last off-season but given it was a strong draft went down that route instead.

This off season I highly doubt we have any picks in the top 30 and will look to make some big moves. The biggest problem however is if we don't improve between now and the end of the season as we will struggle to entice players to come but will have the cap space to perhaps compensate for that.

Agree with the first paragraph not the second. Case in point-Tom Boyd

Dangerfield, and we loose players due to price
Sloane, front runner
Hannerbery , piss head amongst other insinuations
Parker, in consistant
Prestia, midget
Bennell , outside as they come
Zack Smith (Not proven but he is subject to my rule) , you said not proven I agree
Sheil , showing great signs
J.Elliot (People will have their differences but I rate him highly) , restricted in role he can play
Sidebottom , slow and lacks defensive mindset
Yarran (Same as Elliot) NO

The only one I am interested in in that group is Shiel.

Dangerfield too expensive

Sloane, too expensive

Hannerbery too expensive particularly as not FA

Parker too expensive and battle weary

Prestia unproven and expensive

Bennell unproven and WA threats

Zac Smith too expensive for unproven probably plus QLD factor-

Elliot-staying at Collingwood-great!!, never trade for a Collingwood player, unproven

Sidebottom, too expensive, never trade for a Collingwood player, best days may be gone

Yarran unproven and too expensive.

Apart from quality, the age of Shiel makes him the standout to me!

Shiel is the obvious one but if his market value wasn't already too high it is now.....how are we going to pay for him.

Say we finish in the dreaded 9th position we will have pick 10. Pick 10 for Shiel won't be enough as I wouldn't be surprised if they want two top ten picks.

i actually don't think they will be too fussed on high draft pics. i think they will want someone half handy with a bit of experience...
i would love shiel, then i would like to have someone like Tom Mitchell who can play that inside bull of a mid, and would cost us stuff all.

Jesse Lonergan will become a very very good hard inside outside player that was a 1st round selection , No chance he will be delisted and it would take a 1st rounder to get him to move
Hasn't lived up to that yet, I don't think it would take a first rounder, maybe early second round. I really want him to be good, but he hasn't quite looked AFL level yet in his games so far. But he has had a few injuries.

That war chest the club has been banging on about . I reckon the club are prepared to let a couple go if needing to increase pick values or the like to get who we want . Benny Gales interview last night did nothing to hose down speculation he is on his way to Richmond . Mids who can win footy in and out , yet can also go forward and rove off packs and gain the footy at ground level .
They'll take what they are given if he announces I am going to RFC .

Judging by our performances and lack of decent players....if we assume Hawthorn and Sydney are maxing their caps....this should mean that we have at least 1-2 million to spare. If not.....well....poor management.

Yeah but who are these half handy types we are talking about.

I am all for getting rid of Vickery/Conca but we won't get much value for them. Vickery is surplus to needs and is the one I want gone...Conca given how devalued he would be I would rather keep.

Trade wise we don't have much we can afford to give up.

I would be very keen to land Shiel and Tom Mitchell and think it could be done. We would have to give Sydney our second rounder and a player I would think because although he hasn't been playing much footy a team like Carlton will probably have their second rounder in the low 20s and they would be our competition.

IMO Blair Hartley has to pull out all stops and find us someone to replace himself....what a hack...how the f**k do these dudes get paid good dollars to do what? like what? WTF has he brought to the club outside some land fill...outside Chap and Ivan the others are pretty much the left overs. Piss him off ASAP he is a DUD!!

Yeah it's lookimg that way, started off well but been sitting on his hands the last 2 years and not done a thing.

Heard a name pop up in the media online again I have been thinking about in the background for a little while as an option to solve our list woes.

Mr Alex Keath.

What do you think? I think he would be critical for us at a category B rookie. Could play CHB or maybe help CHF when developed. Only 23.

Do you know what I like about him? 196cm. He is less than 197cm which usually, generally mean he is suitably mobile enough for KPP not knowing Keath's specifics. I think the club was keeping tabs on him though.

What I am thinking is if we are chasing Shiel and others we really probably can't be chasing a KPP in the draft even though we need to because the quality we need really falls later but McKenzie was an exceptional effort last year. Last year for example I was banging on about Lever to suit our needs

I am thinking Chaplin cannot play forever, TV in particular is still iffy, Rance is our gun back, Astbury can have issues and we have Griff which gives us a bit of versatility.

Keath would be perfect for us if he could make it with our window and so for IMO. He will take a little while to develop further no doubt but that just means he will not step on our current players toes!

No knowing anything different, on face value, I think he is a great option!

I'd much rather a soft Yarran getting 25 disposals off half back and cutting the opposition open ... Instead of half of our "hard nuts" who get 15-20 average disposals per game.

We need class and we desperately need run out of the backline.

I know I am dreaming but imagine this in 2016;

B- .Batchelor Astbury Chaplin
HB- .Yarran/Aish Rance Houli
C- .B.Ellis Cotchin Mcintosh
HF- .Martin Griffiths Deledio
F- .S.Edwards Riewoldt Vickery
R- .Maric - Miles - Shiel

Bench; C.Ellis, Vlastuin, Conca, McDonough, McBean, Hunt, Gordon, Grimes, Foley, Lennon, Petterd, Elton.

We would obviously lose some of the bench players and draft picks to bring in Shiel & Yarran/Aish.
Agree

Why would Shiel come to rfc if Gws are on the way up and were on the slide
Also his price will have escalated based on this years game
CFC will make a big play bc judd will go and free up space plus they will have a better pick to offer
I hope we delist Grigg or trade bc with our war chest and Griggs salary plus A first rounder it will give us some play. I still reckon we will be pushing it
Foley may have to also retire for us to hang onto Rance
which wouldn't be a bad thing if he has a repeat of last two seasons with a wretched run of Injuries.
Fun and games coming up

We aren't on the slide. We might hover around the 6-12 mark for the next two years but the core of our list still haven't hit there prime. even if we get another coach in, there is no chance in hell we will have a major decline or rebuild.

At GWS his two week cycle will usually be;
Week1: Play in front of 10k in western sydney
Week2: Travel interstate

If he came Richmond he would play on the MCG 12-15 times in front of 40-80k and only have to travel interstate 4-5 times.

Lifestyle has a lot to do it with and if the rumours are true he has wanted to come to Melbourne for a while.

In saying all that, he would be leading gws b&f and is top 5 in a few media awards, if he keeps that up our chances of signing him are very slim.

Yep he was touted top 5 a few years ago and has now grown into his body. Would be keen to chase him but so will every other VIC club.
