I'd pick Dunstall tbh. 269 games, 1254 goals. Lockett had 281 games for 1360. Lockett better average but I just always liked Dunstall more as a player and I think he was equally as good if not better than the big man. Should get more recognition J.D I know it's a different game then to what it is now but none come close to him nowadays imo.

so your argument as to why he is better is that you liked him more? great argument. Lockett had a lot worse supply, played at windy and boggy Moorabbin and still had a better average. far the superior player.

One day at Moorabbin in the late 80's or early 90's (I think) he had Brad Fox and another Essendon defender swapping between manning him up and sitting in the hole in front of him. Kept him goaless and, with both players being from Nhill, led to the headline 'Nhill boys. Nhill goals'

Lockett for mine. I remember as a kid there would always be talk before the game of who is playing on Lockett or Lockett v gun full back being the big story. Don't remember the same about Dunstall.

This is so "Big Footy". Two champions of the game, completely different styles of player, and yet not only do people feel the need to ask who's better, they have to belittle the achievements of the player they don't favour. To have a preference for Lockett is fine, but to say he was streets ahead of Dunstall is just garbage. Dunstall wasn't great because he played for Hawthorn, Hawthorn was great because Dunstall played for them.

I think Plugger was the better player but to say he was streets/miles in front of Dunstall just reeks of ignorance.

Injuries plagued Dunstall's last few seasons, at his peak he was a magnificent FF, the equal of Plugger..

The CHF/FF combo of Derm and Dunny is the best in VFL/AFL history for mine, hated Hawthorn growing up as a child in the 80s cause they won premierships and Carlton's biggest rivals (so it seemed to me) at the time but crikey they earned my respect now and having met Yabby Jeans before he passed away, I could see they were coached by an extraordinary human being as well.

If you relied upon BigFooty as a source of reference, you'd wonder how Hawthorn have ever won a damned thing. Our teams are never good enough, certainly our players aren't that good ... and yet we've won all those flags. It's a modern miracle!!!!!

On pure talent, you'd put Lockett ahead. When you think about it though, we could have seen so much more greatness from him than we did, particularly at St Kilda.

Lockett had two 75+ goal seasons as a teenager (1984, 1985), had 235 goals before his 21st birthday (at an average of 3.31 per game), and won a Brownlow at age 21 in 1987, but then played more than 12 games in just two of the remaining seven seasons he had at St Kilda. Whether it was through injury, illness or suspension, Lockett missed a lot of footy during what should have been his best years - he just played 90 of a possible 155 games between 1988-1994 - and his absences and controversies hurt St Kilda as much as anything else during that era. In those two seasons where Plugger did play the majority of games - 1991, where he played 17 games, took 140 marks, kicked 127 goals and garnered 16 Brownlow votes, and 1992, where he played 22 games, took 157 marks, kicked 132 goals and garnered 10 Brownlow votes - St Kilda made the finals (under a Final Six system). The Saints were 66-2-87 between 1988-1994, 46-44 with Lockett, and 20-2-43 without.

Plugger was as strong as as ox, had great quickness for his size, had a great football brain and golden right boot, was clearly a matchwinner and became a legend, but he was never in prime physical shape (he looks in better condition now, bald and pushing 50, than he did in his playing days), never far from controversy, and never truly fulfilled his potential during what should have been his prime. Meanwhile, Dunstall was fronting up (yes, in better sides, but still) and kicking goal after goal and ton after ton with a minimum of fuss and fanfare (Dunstall kicked 60+ goals in 11 straight seasons between 1986-1996, including six centuries). That's what Lockett wanted, and what he eventually showed that he could do in Sydney. That's why the move north was so big for Plugger, to get a fresh start, fulfill his potential as a goalkicker and rehabilitate his reputation and legacy.

All I remember about Dunstall was pretty boring stuff. ..lead and chest mark with a bit of one on one bodywork..maybe he was so good he made it look boring.
Locket just looked he could beat anyone. Pack marks, leads, everything. Could take a hanger.
If he was at Hawthorn Dunstall would have played forward pocket.

Based on the stats, well the one stat that matters the most, Hudson is the best ever. Highest goals per game average.

If I was a midfielder playing in that era I would've been happy with either leading toward me. If I was an opposition defender I'd rather have played on Dunstall, Lockett came genuinely close to killing a couple of players in his pomp. Finally, If I'd been a teammate in the forward line I'd have preferred playing with Dunstall. His defensive work to lock it in the forward 50 was peerless among full forwards and he often dished the ball off to teammates, particularly those having a quiet game.
