I'd pick Dunstall tbh. 269 games, 1254 goals. Lockett had 281 games for 1360. Lockett better average but I just always liked Dunstall more as a player and I think he was equally as good if not better than the big man. Should get more recognition J.D I know it's a different game then to what it is now but none come close to him nowadays imo.

I would pick Dunstall as a teammate but would also prefer to play on him than Plugger or fill the hole!

Splitting hairs though here, Plugger was more dominant, Dunstall more reliable & consistent. I grew up idolising Dunstall (not a Hawks fan) because of he wasn't a traditional hungry selfish full forward, if he played more for himself he might have kicked 1500 but have 1-2 less flags.

Who was the better footballer as an individual? I'd say Lockett.

As someone who could play as part of a wider team set-up? Dunstall.

I don't rate Brereton much - but did hear a comment I quite agreed with

You look at ablett at applaud his indivdual brilliance, you'd back lockett to be the one who would be the best on any given day, but you'd pick Dunstall for a bloke who over an entire career would perform and win seasons/premierships year after year after year

It's fair to say though that everyone's impressions of fooballers is coloured considerably by how that bloke goes against your side - as that is the game you see most often. Hence for me I've always rated Lockett - we needed to play 2 blokes on him and he still managed to kick 6.

People often rate Carey, yet as a WC fan - he did play some great games, but on the whole Jako had his measure, particularly pre-knee. As such, he never had the GOAT dominance that others may have experienced from other sides.

I'd have to pick Tony Lockett because I had the privilege of seeing him play so many more times than I saw Jason Dunstall play but really they are both great full forwards in vastly different teams. (At least for half of Lockett's career). Would Dunstall have kicked more goals if Hawthorn were not so good and had less routes to goals? Would Lockett have kicked less goals if he'd played in a better team?

IMO they would each kick 200 goals a year if they were playing now given the soft free kicks forwards have gotten in the last few years.

I'd argue Lockett would probably kick about 45 a year... he'd only play 4 games and be suspended for 18

Lockett did a lot of his amazing work in a really bad team but Dunstall did his work in a great team. Now I think Dunstall was an amazing player but how the ball comes into the forward line is also very very important for a forward and Dunstall would have no doubt had the better service in his career.

Perhaps, but then he wouldn't have a need to hit anyone because they wouldn't be hanging on or chopping his arms and how good would those 4 games be to watch.

Plugger by a fair margin for mine.

Dunstall an all time great - but had outstanding service for most, if not all, of his career.

Plugger played the first 11 seasons of his in mainly shithouse sides (particularly some of those 80's St Kilda sides) and kicked ton after ton and winning a Brownlow.

Also one of the scariest bastards to have laced a boot.
