Was Bacca playing equivalent of non league a few years back? Remember seeing a piece a few weeks ago, something about him and his path to where he is now was a bit out of the ordinary.

Aggressive little sh*t, solid, quick, good finisher, links up well. For want of a better word he would definitely put a bit of bite back into our forward line. One of a handful of forwards I'd be happy with us looking at.

If a 28/29-year-old comes in and gives us three very good seasons, then who cares if we take a hit on him in a few years' time? We don't sign enough players who can make an IMMEDIATE impact.

I'd rather us take a risk and it not work out than continue to plod along with "safe" players who aren't up to it anyway.

I don't know enough about Bacca to give an informed opinion about whether or not he would be a good signing, but from the little I've seen he looks OK. But we should never be scared of signing a 28/29-year-old just because their resale value won't be great.

Sure, I agree with you but the 28/29 year old coming in has to be very, very good. So you dont mind taking the hit of the 25 million you are spunking on him, knowing that you will never get any money back on the deal.

Is Bacca that good? To spend that kind of money on a guy that old with no real pedigree of being an absolute top draw player?

Im all for bringing in guys who can make an immediate impact. Im annoyed that we keep buying young. But the age range shouldnt be 29, we should be looking at bringing in players around 24-26 to make an immediate impact.

He was playing for Atletico Junior, a side in the Columbian top league as recently as 2011. Then he moved to Club Brugge for two years and then Sevilla the last two.

It would be a big gamble for us.

All big-money transfers involve some element of risk.

The bigger gamble is NOT signing anyone of the required quality who can come in and make an impact and the club continue to drift along in a sea of mediocrity.

But if you get a 24 year old of the same calibre you would have to pay double that.

£25m isn't really that much in the modern day, it doesn't get you a superstar like it once would have

United dont fret about resale value at all because they have tons and tons of money.

If we bought Bacca, he scored a ton of goals and we get back in the CL. Great, what a signing. The CL money alone covers any resale value we would lose. Of course that is the glass half full way of looking at it.

As I said im not against it. It would just be a big gamble and certainly outside of what FSG usually look at. If it works, great. If it doesnt, it will be ****ed. Cos he is too old to make any money back off of.

markovic is an example. 20 mil for a very speculative player from portugal. a worse league than spain. shown some things, but really done two bits of bugger all as of now. bacca just scored 28 goals for sevilla and won them the europa league. for an extra 5 mil or so.

You could find similar forward with similar outputs stats wise, far younger and spend the same kind of money on them.

Not totally against buying older players, but they have be the right ones. Bacca isn't for mine.

This is the part the club doesn't seem to understand.

You generally get what you pay for. So while you might pay more than you would ideally like for a player NOW, they command a price like that because they are so good, and because they are so good, they improve the side dramatically, which in turn leads to greater prospects of competing for honours, which in turn leads to more money for the club, which pays back the club and then some for the initial transfer anyway!

It's so frustrating.

if liverpool, a global brand, one of the biggest clubs in the world, aren't making enough cash to be able to buy anyone until you sell your brightest star, then there are a magnitude of problems at your club.

arsenal always had money too. a desire to have a better balance sheet than football team was their problem.
