Autopsy What are the positions of need now?

Fair call:

1. Inside Mid - Priority, Miles and Cotchin got physically smashed and had no support, not sure if there is one available.
2. Outside Mid with speed. - Why Yarran won't be the bust people seem to think he'll be, Menadue will be but needs time.
3. Lead up 3rd Forward - Lennon will be this, needs to take his omission on the chin and work his backside off, has the tools to be a Ryan O'Keefe.
4. Effective Crumbing Small - Huge hole, Butler a chance? Yarran at times, I don't ****ing know!
5. More Athletic Ruckman - Another priority, think I'll pull one out of my arse.
6. Team Depth - Will come, we have quality youngsters and a decent list.
7. Key Back - Chaplin has been good for us but a replacement must be found, Astbury, Elton the hopes and Carlisle would be a good fit.

Love Big Ivan, but...

Pretty much agree with this. Our backline didn't lose us the final, not did our forwards. We lost the inside 50 count massively and yet we nearly pinched the game, which tells me we outperformed North at both ends whatever deficiencies there may have been in individual performances. We rely on two players to win clearances: Miles and Cotchin. When one or both of them fail we're stuffed. Both are relatively small and, since Jacko and Tuck retired, we've lacked big bodies in the centre (apart from Grigg at times, but he's not naturally an inside mid and Maric himself when he's in beast mode).

Don't get the griff hate. Probably got asked to play and didn't want to let the team down by being injured. Had he kicked those goals we would be praising the bloke. Think he can be a good swing man for us. Conca had 8 touches and a goal in a quarter and a bit. That's one less than cotchin and 2 less than Ellis in a whole game.

Thats why they are good for a trade and have currency for in window clubs desperate for top ups now like Freo where we should get good draft picks we can use.
If we can get Bennell, Treloar and Weller out of it, why not?

Yeah but Bulldogs will rise, West Coast stay strong, Freo who knows with trades, like North. Adelaide, Geelong with trades? Swans be around with the academy

Remember getting Treloar,Bennell and Weller will not put us back too much. It will just let us chase bigger targets down the track when better players are available at value.

There is no point chasing Chaplin types that are not good enough to get you to the top 4 like a Carlsie,Yarran that stop us chasing genuine quality when available!

Can't take too much notice of Home and away given the prevalence of tanking. Collingwood managed their draft position well but they do not have the youth assets to draw on that we do. That's why we should probably trade the likes of Concave and Griff to Freo with McCarthy to get the youth and future flexibility in our list we need and scope to enable us to develop a real premiership quality capability.

The other thing is non-top4 capability gives us more currency in future draft picks to get Treloar and Bennell while we target other bigger names later. For example we might be forced to chase a Goldstein later or settle for a Cunnigton depending on howNorth slips, or maybe another and there obviously are other opportunities going forward in FA like a Barlow depending on where players and clubs are at provided we set us up right.

It seems in finals we lack top line talent so we need to adjust our options to attract such talent IMO
Can you send me your dealers number?? I want some

Please. Got asked to play, like he was doing us a favour?
FFS he had two EASY shots and missed them both. That's on him and no one else.
Conca provided the run we needed, kicked a ripper goal. Then when the heat was on turned it over from a 20m kick. That's on him.

The thing is, with the abolishment of the sub rule, it means clubs can now play a one dimensional ruckman. Think Geelong with Blake, Hawks with Renouf etc. before the sub rule. I think we could probably play Hampson as his tap work is pretty good, and would be good to counteract the more mobile ruckman like Nic Nat, Stef Martin, etc.

griff had one good quarter. the first quarter. he has a habit of missing easy shots too. in the next quarter and a half he accumulated a total of 4 possessions.
he goes missing simple as that. I'd rather have schulz on the list next year.

conca was good, that turnover was shocking but no more shocking than lids'. if conca was fit and had played the whole game we would've been better for it.

That's easily fixed just need a good goal kicking coach to spend some time with him. I'm baffled why port haven't got a good goal kicking coach in for butcher.

Harley bennell 22yo gun midfielder who can go forward and kick goals... Roll the dice and take the risk!
This bloke has more X factor than anyone in the competition under 25 and he hasn't reached his full potential. Genuinely has the skills to be top 5 in the competition.

Coke addict who will most likely be outed from the game within 3 years .

Top quality inside mid to take pressure off a few blokes - Treloar.
Realistically? Probably not Treloar...

A bit of x-factor up forward - Yarran/Stevie J.
Realistically? Yarran/Stevie J

And I like Adcock to add a bit more experience in defence for two years. Astbury could have played on the weekend, so let's not go too crazy with Carlisle, he will also cost the farm. We were just too short on the day, we can fix that long term.

More than ever, this is the off-season to go for it. I think our blokes will have a busy period.

Absolute priority imo is one or two quality small forwards. When the ball hits the ground in our forward line we are rubbish

What's the point of this thread as all can be asked and answered in the Hartley one?

This is more about list management including who to dump and when. Who canwe dump now, trade, cover or upgrade now or later.
Eg get mids now, get backs and rucks later or get Martin on cheap replace with Lycett and Nicholls via FA. Who is in the market for the next 5-6 years and what is the best way to accommodate that?

How to mitigate size of loss of players to FA?

Ignore Redden and Yarran now, get in 2016if need be

Includes cap space management eg Weller for whoever to free up cap space and extend opportunities later. Planning later to chase a big gun like Bontempelli. What is our FA target strategy for the next 10 years?

Who do we turf in 2016? What should we get now to accommodate that and set ourselves up if we have a number of holes that can't be fixed in a year.

What do we do now to accommodate what we are targeting and letting go in 2017 , 2018 and 2019.

How long are we managing Lids for 3 years, 5 years or another 8 years plus. What our cap will be like in 4-5 years and how much flexibility will we have in contention years based on list projections.

What do we do with future picks and salary caps for the next 6 years including what are our range ladder position expectations for the next 6 years as well as our competitors.

How do we stop opposition threats in the next 6 years on-field and which cattle do we lack?

What are the like salary cap changes with the new deal and other forces at play? How is that accommodated. Is TPP part of players contracts?

Full audit of girlfriend capabilities of players to maximise market opportunities for player windfalls. Ensure investment soundness support to provide confidence to players financial worries alleviated so players comfortable with club returns, financial welfare and as well as path in life etc. Including life coaches etc... To ensure what club does keeps the list together to maximise the benefit of club and player success

KPF - 5 (Jack, Vick, Griff, McBean and Mckenzie) Mcbean to put on 5 kg over the summer and he'll be our Jesse Hogan. McKenzie then to be our #1 VFL kpf and get hiom to boot 30-40 next year. Griff to be battling with Vick as our 3rd KPF next year or 1 of them to go. We probably dont need another one in the front end of the draft, but wouldnt be against rookieng one.
Small fowards - 7 (Mcdonough, Morris, Newman, Edwards, Lloyd,. Menadue, Butler, Short) we have enough, just the majority of them are not playing. Newman is done, Morris is not good enough and Titch is more of a mid. lloyd is a natural goal kicker, but needs to work on the other parts of his game. mcdonough cant get a decent run, Menadue was serviceable when he came in and Butler hasnt been fit. Short did alright and should get another year on the rookie list. But Mcdonough, Menadue and Butler can all play in the next few years. Getting Yarran in the short term would be good for the team, but not for these players, unless Yarran is used down back. I dont think we need another on, just need to get games into Mcdonough, menadue and Butler, and give games to Lloyd if he can do more 2 way running.
Possibly 1, but probably rookie in this spot
Medium Forwards - 3 (Lennon, Knights, Gordon) Here is where we are seriously lacking in depth. knights is done, Gordon is not good enough. Lennon showed a lot and should have played yesterday. We rely on Lids and Dusty to do the hard leadup running when they are resting forward and we desperately need some more medium forwards. Stevie J has been touted here. We need a 189 cm forward here that can run like gordon and has the smarts of lennon, or we have Lids play here FT next year. 1-2 medium forwards required
KPD - 4 (Rance, Chaplin, Astbury, Elton). As you can see, we are probably 1 player short here, 3 if you consider that Chaplin is near the end of his career and Astbury probably isnt going to be a key player next year. we need to draft 1-2 KPD monsters. Carlisle might be good here.
Small backs - 4 (Houli, Vlastuin, Hunt, Dea, Castagna) Houli and Vlastuin are solid, Hunt is servicable but has question marks. Dea should have got games this year as he dominated the VFL. Castanga showed enough to be promoted. the one thing all these players are missing is speed, and against team with good small forwards, we are getting torn up. Yarran here would be a great fit, but does he have the temperament? We need someone here desperately
Medium backs - 2 (Grimes, Batchelor) both are servicable and had great years. Batch went missing for the second EF in a row but Grimes had a solid game. Grimes is showing a bit, but does Batch have anymore improvement in him? we'd need another 1-2 here as backup
Inside mids - 4 (Miles, Cotch, Thomas, Arnot, Foley, Conca) as you can see we dont have much in this area. Miles is brilliant, Cotch can win his own ball when he wants, Conca hasnt been fit for 2 years and there are some question marks here. Thomas and Arnot are back up, while Foley is retired. We got smashed yesterday and when we do get smashed, there is noone else that can go in and win the hard stuff. We need 1-2 here
Outside mids - (Lids, Dusty, Mcintosh, Grigg,B Ellis, Lambert, Drummond, CEllis) a lot of skill and penetration here. We just dont have the inside mids to get the ball to them. When we win the contested ball these guys are unstoppable. Like yesterday, when we dont, these guys go missing. Nothing here to improve on, these guys are all class. However, you can never have to much class, and we need to keep lookig toward the future. So maybe 1-2 here, but not urgent.
Rucks - 3 (Maric, Hampson, Soldo) Looking quite weak here at the moment. Maric has been amazing since crossing over, but every year his body is getting more run down and will have 2 years left in him. Hampson is still iffy, and Soldo is such a project player. you need 3 ruckman and we have 1 and a half. 1-2 here, with 1 of them being rookies will do the trick

so looking at it this way, what we are crying out for in the next year or 2 is: 2 inside mids, 1-2 medium forwards, 1-2 medium backs, 1-2 small backs, a ruckman and 2 kpd.

The rest of the positions are well stocked (some perhaps too much) and we have enough good players there that can do the job.
The problem is is that the players we need are such a premium, you dont necessarily get them in the draft., so our recruitment team need to be creative and find some diamonds, or we have to trade for them.
Great post.
I think we'll keep Astbury,With so many holes and or question marks i,m not sure we'll go after someone like Carlisle,Comes down to what our priorities are.For and foremost and inside Mid( be on the phone to Dangerfields manager straight after the siren) and a Ruckman.

Coke addict who will most likely be outed from the game within 3 years .
If he helps us win a flag within those 3yrs,I wouldn't give a flying you know what after that.In fact he'll probally get busted GF night celebrations.

I thought hartleys was all about list management how dumb of me.

1. fitness
2. new midfield coach
3. ruckman that can compete with the goldy, nic nat & sandi's of the world
4. midfield depth weather that comes from internal improvement or from outside
4 (a) blokes who can tackle and are hard at the ball
5. kpd

I thought hartleys was all about list management how dumb of me.

No the original creator created a stink and said it was about mainly players we should target which narrowed the scope but there is more to it than that. Actually I thought this was undertakers listmanagement thread.

Truth is the Hartley thread is too political for me and frankly, although I have been banned from it twice, the Hartley thread is just too difficult to get along with in terms of posters pushing their agendas. I assume more domineering posters in the Hartley thread like to report whatever for whatever posts. Who knows?. I just find it too laborious now so I just like which posts I want to and stay out of it which I am forced to but I can't be bother with it anymore anyway.

I think the Hartley thread has been used as a control mechanism to within the season. So anything loose can go into Hartley thread and they can control it with thread bans. Since the RFC season is over and a real rethink is probably under way given the circumstances of how it ended including who to let go they are probably more open to more open ended discussion on what to do to improve our list and the way to go forward.

Technically this is more about positions and needs than players I assume.

Eg. Get Treloar, Bennell now with Weller and a Martin, chase a Lycett later in FA or chase a permanent ruck later.

We can persist with Chaplin and chase alternatives later or draft and see later chasing FA backs in 2016 or 2017 depending on market supply for backs versus mids versus rucks versus forwards at FA values and other trade posssibilities

Need a quality small forward. Newman was still the teams best defensive forward and his tackling pressure will be missed. Lennon has earned his stripes as a lead up forward with his strong hands, so shouldnt be laden with the burden of playing that role, Lloyd is too slow, Lambert too short, Gordon too slight but probably the best option we have. Would love a quick strong bodied HFF'er who can play a shut down role and but has some goal sense (Not Morris!!)
