Traded Patrick Dangerfield [traded w/ pick 50 to Geelong for 9, 28 and Gore]

Pick 9 and cockatoo is definitely fair. Perhaps unders for a top 5 player.

Don't think it will happen though. Adelaide must match and get more then the compo. Even if it's just pick 9, that's still worth matching
Wouldn't trade Cockatoo in a heart beat. But if a trade did emanate I'd give them pick 9 and George Horlin-Smith (an inside mid). The question is would the compo pick be enough for them or do they want to trade for him? Rumour had it earlier in the week that Paddy & his manager was pressuring them to take the compo pick, threatening them he'll do a Luke Ball and go by the preseason draft. That would mean Adelaide would get nothing.

I suggested simply 2 picks after Adelaide's first, so 14 and 15.

That provides additional compensation, high enough for the Crows to get real benefit, but not too high as to upset other clubs (e.g. giving them Pick 1 or 2).

My personal belief is that something like this is/has been discussed behind closed doors.

I reckon the rest of the clubs would be up in arms about the Crows getting 2 compensation picks, especially after Hawthorn only got 1 for Franklin. Bear in mind that every compensation pick handed out pushes everybody else's picks down another spot. So even 14 and 15 for the Crows would probably be 16 and 17 by the time Brisbane and Carlton get their compensation picks, and everybody else's picks after that are correspondingly lower.

And that's the big flaw in the free agency compensation system. Players' value should be in absolute terms, i.e. "this player is worth pick 1 or pick 5 or 10 or 20" or whatever, not "this guy is worth a pick after your first round pick". That produces farcical results like Hawthorn getting 19 for Franklin while Melbourne get 3 for Frawley. Or the potential this year for the Crows to get 16 (after other compensation picks are handed out) for Dangerfield while Carlton get 2 for Kruezer.

The end result being it ends up being very much in the Crows' best interests to match the FA offer and extract fair compensation from Geelong since they're sure as hell not going to get it from the AFL.

What if the trade is just pick 9? If the crows just matched for getting a pick better then a potential compo pick. Then why not

I doubt dangerfield would screw the crows over any further

As a football fan I dislike this. Hate seeing a clubs best player walk out on them.

As an Eagles fan I like this. Adelaide are an up and coming threat. Geelong are on the downwards slide. Much better he goes there than say Doggies.

I think that would be a fair trade if that's how it plays out.

... I like the part where it says 'requests trade' -

He knows he won't get there by FA

I'm not sure what the trade will be but I'm pretty confident this will be the end of restricted free agency at 8 years.

I expect 8 years will be the new mark for unrestricted free agency and restricted free agency will be scrapped or come in at 6 years.

Rightly or wrong the AFLPA aren't happy that Dangerfield has to be traded

Actually I think it does work.

If player wants out for genuine reasons and wants the club not to get screwed over he can request to be traded.

Whereas if they are leaving due to lack of opportunity or because they're disliked or just because they're going for the cash then the club gets the compensation instead.

Good luck to Adelaide though. I still think we're in a very weak position and wont get anywhere near fair value, but surely more than just pick 14 or whatever.

Crows can consider themselves lucky that compensation picks haven't been removed yet. Would have got nothing otherwise.

Except the AFL has come out today and said that compensation will likely INCREASE

but nice attempted troll.

Compare the Geelong side of 2015 to what will be our side in 2016 and tell us again Geelong is sliding.

Would you like some help adding in some players?

You understand that compensation has nothing to do with a player's ability right? If a lower club loses a quality player, they are rewarded more than if a top club loses a player, and while that may seem unfair, it does help with some equalization.
The counter argument is that it produces so-called feeder clubs.
Giving compensation will stay the same until the AFL come to their senses and scrap compensation for free agency.

Has there been any confirmation that he wants to go to Geelong?
All I have read is "to Victoria"
The article does say Dangerfield has told club officials he wants to play for the Cats

Adelaide have no right to try and get the best deal possible for a player they don't want to lose.
So hard to deal with!
I'd say it does make it hard to deal with, but surely thats what you want. You don't want to be a club that bends over all the time

Nahhh just checked the trophy cabinet, looks like there's things in there still.

How's yours? Colin Sylvia still getting around? Cam McCarthy on the way over is? Jack Anthony, how's he looking?
Can we keep on topic please? It's obvious to everyone, if Dangerfield wanted success he would've gone to a club with a future, not a club with an old list full of holes.
