I've got no problem with it, if it is in front of his own supporters. I like to think we'd be better people to not begin doing some Wayne's World 'we're not worthy' bow to him as well. That is pure cringe.

There is a bit of truth to what Cornes says given the 18 clubs have to contribute around $600,000 each to run the TAC U/18 comp and they all employ a lot of specialists to make sure these kids are prepared for the draft at seasons end or next season if you have an U/17 kid playing. Of course he can't help go on about conspiracy theories but the U/18 comps in states outside the TAC cup can't really compete with that sort of production line given the available resources.

What are their 12 - 14 TAC Cup clubs? So that means about $1m a year each. $1mil a year is what it costs to run the Magpies and some junior programs. Give Port $1m to run an U/18 team and I reckon we could produce 4 to 6 draftees each year.

I agree with what you say REH, my comment was (meant to be anyway) regarding the lack of consistency in Wrinkles position on things. There was truth behind our Clubs statements a few years back but all we got from him was stop bleating and blaming others yet when it suits him he comes out with this article today.

I guess it's an individual preference thing. I used hate Hardwick when he was playing for Essendon, but he was one of my favourites when he moved to Port.

The only problem I have with Betts and the wider Crows nation is, when you celebrate well over the boundary line, that close to the fence, while your captain is gesticulating and that rat-faced spud Rory Atkins is cupping his hand to his ear, you're in no position to complain about the (non-fruited themed) response you receive.

Jenkins' Twitter sermon was all kinds of f**ked up.

The problem as I've said before is the sanfl sides have little motivation to develop kids to be picked in the AFL, but through the sanfl they also control lower level footy in this state. So any u18 comp in sa would be forced to run under the sanfl clubs.

As such they would have their hands out for cash and then probably not use it all in the kids. I reckon the AFL knows full well the sanfl club leach mentality. Will prevent any standalone u18s.

Port Adelaide have used the AFL draft to strengthen the stocks of the SANFL Port Magpies

IF EVER there was a case for a national AFL Reserves competition, it was emphasised by last week’s rookie draft.

Having ignored the local talent in the national draft, Port Adelaide (understandingly) selected only local players.

Given the fact that these rookies are unlikely yet to play at senior AFL level, Port has effectively bolstered the strength of it SANFL Magpies team at the expense of the local clubs.

With the exception of Eddy...

As has been said many times before, it is important for our two AFL teams to have reserve teams but the controversial decision to include the Crows and Port reserve teams in the SANFL has not really worked.

While the television audience has been good, the crowds at the local football have fallen and increasingly, the local fans have become disenchanted with the concept.

Live crowds have decreased, but television audiences have increased? Could it be that people prefer watching the SANFL's low-grade, low-scoring brand of football at home, from the comfort of their armchair, for free, to avoid a $14.00 entrance fee and your eight-year-old son a potential bashing from Nafan, that half-toofless Central Districts supporter on his fiff $9.00 can of West End, who claims he looked at his missus funny?

No, of course not. It must be Adelaide and Port Adelaide's fault.

This is particularly so at finals time when the traditional SANFL teams are eliminated by the AFL reserve teams.

No one should deny these young players an opportunity with an AFL club, but the rookie system continues to exploit the ambition of young players desperate to make it on to an AFL list.

Well, if someone had developed them properly from the get-go...

The AFL can splurge its money on the new clubs in the northern states and a new women’s competition but if it is serious about giving each club a chance to develop its players properly, the only solution is to establish a truly national reserve competition for its 16 competing clubs.
