Violence begets violence. Far to many get whipped up into a froth that enables violence, hatred and undoes IMHO civil society.

I against violence and condemn it. I don't agree with aggressive, violent, trashing people and places , disrupt at all costs protests. I think it's wrong no matter which faction or interest group is doing it. The Trashing of bernardi's office a case in put, dumb politics, and worse morally wrong.

Boycotts or against attempting some venue or platform being used is ok. That this person is inaaprioate and against the values of your school is ok. But once you lose that conversation, (put your case firmly but politely ) silent, non disruptive clam protest is the way to go.

I guess that is the crux of the question though: when you're dealing with a thoroughly undemocratic movement like the far right, whether they're Nazi dweebs or ISIS headcutters, at what point is it self defence?

I'm going to suggest it's self defence when one party uses unnecessary force.

They are a legitimately dangerous group. One of them has been done for terrorism and he has links to the major players in that movement. There is a shitload of drugs (roids and illicit) and weapons within these groups. They are led by violent men with violent histories.

Nobody ever said anything about conceding the streets. All that's needed is the elimination of that arseh*le element that's determined to fight through police lines and have a sort of close quarters combat between the other sides. Turning up in numbers and showing they will never have the greater popular support is all that's required, because without that their premise is meaningless.

I'm not at all sure it's fairly independent of the clashes. I used to live in Bendigo; there was no UPF or Reclaim Australia presence, beyond a Stop the Mosque facebook page, before the riot. I only need to look at the lowest common denominator of "political activist" these groups are attracting to know the violence has a lot to do with it.

A Nazi is a member of the National Socialist German Workers' Party. A Neo-Nazi is a member of an organization similar to the German Nazi Party (which, according to the trusted Wikipedia, includes policies such as ultra-nationalism, racism, ableism, xenophobia, homophobia, antiziganism, antisemitism, and initiating the Fourth Reich).

I have never met anyone in my life who meets that description (although I've met a few odd balls). I am guessing there would be at most 1000 such people in Australia.

If you go out of your way to track these neo-Nazi's down in order to assault them, then you are a trouble maker. As is commonly done in civilised society, let the police do their job of enforcing the law and refrain from vigilante violence.

I met one 25-30 years ago. He lead the group going by the name "the national front" which was pro white and pro Australians for Australia.

The stand out hypocrisy of the guy (Micheal Brander) was he was Spanish and being a little pedantic.......definitely not white (Mediterranean skin).

I was hard to be angry at the guy for his position as his mother tried to stab to death the whole family. As such I saw his political position, simply an extension to trauma and mental health.
