I wouldn't be surprised if Savage is working more on the defensive side to his game. I thought he defended quite well and tight on his man on a number of occasions.

In the same space I thought Rice's game was interesting in that no one is talking much about it (good or bad). I've watched the game twice now and barely recall him. But he had nine disposals which were all kicks (78%), two tackles, two inside fifties, and was out there for 84% of the match. The commentators didn't even mention him, and he was playing against Carlton! Any thoughts?

A good stat; we had fifty more disposals than the Blues and twenty more tackles. Nice.

There's a bit of heat on the forum tonight and that's after putting a team to the sword. Imagine what the real stuff is going to be like. It feels like a ten goal loss on here.
Truth be told, we only beat a GWS Giants 3rds team.... ;)

The squabbling on here from the usual suspects ruins the place, as is beginning to be shown in this thread.

Far too many unnecessary melts as well, would be good if things were just generally a little more positive and rational although we're all guilty of posting in the heat of the moment.
Do you remember the loss to Ade last year?? We were getting a new coach and the list was going.nowhere.

Of course there's truth in it, if you find my posts from the time you will see that he didn't speak with him one on one for whole season.
Watters was a campaigner, still is, that's why he hasn't been employed at any other AFL club since, not even as a toilet cleaner.

In regards to Acres, he seems to be the board love child, I don't see him as anything special, never have, he's an ordinary AFL player who I doubt will be with us when he we are pushing for a flag.

Longer is jobber, way behind Hickey in terms of ability and impact, but a good back up.

Steele is a gun, will be a super star, GWS were gutted he left, for a number of reasons, he will be a poster boy for the AFL unfortunately, where academy talent goes to a non NSW club and dominates the competition.

Go Saints!

I remember you didnt hold back at the time either!! haha

Reckon Steele is going to be a cracker - an absolute bargain too

You'd be surprised. I was only one of a dozen people in the room.

I wasn't the one who heard it

On a completely different topic, did you watch the Freo v Coll game yesterday?
If so, any thoughts?
You are my Freo ITK.
Were either team any good?
From here, to run Freo to an after siren win in a heatwave in WA seems to be a great effort.
Alternatively, weak effort by Freo to allow that to happen.
But I'm suspicious.

Anyway, I'm barracking for three teams this year:
Us
Whoever plays Hawthorn (for a really good draft pick - better than #10 and hopefully as good as #5)
Whoever plays Freo (so Fyfe wants out).

PS: Heard from a Moorabbin connection last night that the offer is $1.2m pa over 5.

On a side note.. whoever compiled the highlights of the game for the AFL website should be close to getting sacked.. that was a terrible highlight package.
Also How can a team that kick 4 goals and lose by 92 points even get just as many highlights as us.

This happened last year too. The highlights package for I think our second win against Carlton - they were reduced to showing marks and some kind nice general field play in the highlights package because CFC just gave them that little to work with.

There is one thing that can't be disputed. Hickey was CLEARLY ahead of Longer, and most other AFL ruckman last year. Something radical must have happened over pre season for this to have changed.
He deserves first crack this year for that reason alone. If Billy is good enough he will get his chance. I personally don't think he is, and I rate Hickey highly.
Some really strange opinions on this subject. I think Plugger's views are quite fair on the subject. Not sure why all the hate. We have a good a problem.

Hickey for me. Form at the top level over fantasy. Easy descision.

I remember seeing him once. Cant remember a disposal though. I thought he didnt get a touch tbh

Did anyone else hear the genuine excitement in Armo's voice when he was talking about Long during the match? Can't wait to see the kid play (obviously not expecting much in his first year - no pressure!).

Also, Lonie can don a Zebs jumper until he stops dramatically flopping to the ground or throwing his head back like he's been shot. It's an awful look, especially when doing so takes him out of the contest.

stats must be broken - I'm sure he only played the second half.

Loves throwing the head back & also doing the 'hot potato' drop of the footy & throw the arms out when tackled... Terrible look & needs to be addressed.

Dal Santo made mention of Rice when he first came on, saying his dad played for both clubs and that he was wearing his number. I'm pretty sure it was in the second quarter.

Sandy mentioned the number Dal said he wasn't sure as it was well before his time.

Yeah.
I just keep remembering how we played a GF with Rob Eddy and Andrew McQualter.
Then i think about how many players we have now that are not best 22 or that we'd argue about.

Wright, Sinclair, Webster, Stevens. Yes Please.
Young Ben McEvoy with 10 hitouts anyone?

You would hope that the club are smart enough to play the best performed ruckman in real games and that is Hickey. I thought Longer was ordinary considering who he played against yesterday. I'm not sure ruck marking is important but it doesn't hurt. and Neither does actually touching the ball more than 10 times game. If its about hitting a ball to a 50 50 target and a few tackles I'm sure we could get a tall basketballer to learn the game.

Here we go again
