What I like is that I now get to see who this mystery pick at 15 is.
I was worried we were going to cough up 15.

Regarding the suggestion of using the spare cash we now have to front load contracts on our players; we probably could only do that on guys who are yet to re-sign, so if Motlop's 2 year deal hasn't been agreed & lodged yet, we pay more next year & less in year 2, because going by information the AFL released regarding Buddy's contract with Sydney, doesn't seem much point bringing forward money on already accepted & lodged contracts as we would have to count the money twice in TPP; the year it is paid & the year it was to be paid, so that really isn't of benefit come that second year:

For instance, should another player unexpectedly retire in year three of Franklin's contract and Sydney finds itself with spare salary cap space, the club would be able to bring forward part of Franklin's payment from the final years of his deal, lessening its financial obligation to him towards the end of his career and freeing up cash for other business purposes.
But doing so would mean that money would count twice - in the salary cap of the year that it is paid, as well as in the year it was due to be paid as part of the contract as originally offered, accepted and lodged.

So it doesn't necessarily seem to free up space in the salary cap in later years if that money still has to be counted in the original year of agreement.

It seems strange. Perhaps is more of a get out of jail card for poor clubs in that whilst the money is still counted you can in a sense elect when you pay it? But that would seem to favour richer clubs who can pay the full 100% dunno!?

For the first time in quite a while I agree with terry Wallace.

Offering shaw a five year deal and give him a substantial pay rise at the same time given he is 28 and has behavioral issues is definitely overs

Definitely dodged a bullet :thumbsu:

**** Wallace and Barrett are two of the dumbest football commentators in the land. It kills me that they are on Trade Radio. I love my trashy trade talk... but not with these two.

It's obvious that they are all mates with players/manager/clubs and are trying to angle for the best deal for their friends and interests etc. The other morning Brown said the Dogs should give up pick 3 for Crameri.

Pick 3 for crameri LOL going on that trade currency package west and varcoe ( don't actually want them traded) for pick 1 ;)

It's just frustrating - it's a bit like Robbo, they don't really prepare or go in depth. I mean the other day a kid called about from Adelaide and was all like "I've heard the Crows have been looking at player X from GWS" and Brown is all like "yeah yeah they are I'm all over it etc" so the kid is like "So tell me about him" and Brown is like "oh I don't know much about him" FFS you or your producer can't google him and go: "Oh right 180cm back flanker could be a good get". LLLAAAAZZZY.

It's easy to say now, but I wonder if we'll all be singing the same tune if we finish off 2014 like we did 2013 and Chapman and Shaw have great years for their new clubs. I've got a feeling it's not the last time we'll discuss Shaw on this board over the next 12 months. I'm fine with the decision (unlike with Chapman), but I don't think it's an absolute home run, by any stretch. It could ultimately prove to be very costly in 2014, though it's clearly the best thing for the club five years down the track.

I remember David Schwarz and Mark Allen drawing a complete blank on Koby Stevens when he joined the Bulldogs last year, even though he'd been tipped as a player on the move for about a week. They even managed to make it sound like it was Stevens' fault that they didn't know anything about him. Do these guys literally get into the office, go straight on the air and go home? A bit of research wouldn't go astray.

It's a very unique position we are in MilkMan! I think we may indeed finish in a similar position but that will be due to improvement coming from our rucks. "We" need to decide whether next year means getting 8 or 16 games into guys like Thurlow...

This is why they are going down this path though.
With pick 15 I'd back Wells to get a quality 10 year player (say Acres or Gardiner please!).
I'd rather 10 years/150-200 games from a new kid over 10 games from Chapman or 45 games from Shaw.

The unfortunate thing for us is that it will cost us Taylor Adams as well. They get rid of Shaw to a club that isn't a premiership rival and get Adams in return. The Pies will be loving this. Has taken some of the shine off us dodging the Heath Shaw bullet.
Mad_Catter, I think it's ok. GWS needed a big name. Geelong does a bit, if not all it could, towards a NDH policy and Shaw would have been better as a player for us than Adams, if off-field were the same for both. So it's win-win. BTW: is there a reason no one is talking about Scooter as a target at present? (or have I missed the thread?) Just b/c a manager denied it? If it were Canberra that would make him a shoe-in. Oh and I am sure many noted that Balmey just went on a 4- week holiday. Surely whatever is going to happen will be stitched up. Would love Scooter but troubled by who the swap might be... Go the mighty Cats!

I am glad Heath Shaw picked GWS as his club going forward.

I was in two minds about having Shaw at Geelong.

Pros:- Good player.

Cons:- Got in trouble for betting (twice), ran from car accident and then lied to club about it,

-was part of infamous "Rat Pack" at Collingwood (and I don't mean Sinatra, Dean Martin, or Sammy Davis jr, who, if still alive, would have been great entertainment for next Geelong function, or even on Grand Final Day. Imagine 99,000 at 'G on Grand Final day singing "My Way", "Candyman" or "It's Amore". But I digress).

-has an annoying squeaky voice when arguing with umpires, and giving away free kicks, which he does a lot.
(Repeat after me in falsetto voice:- "I DIDN'T PUSH HIM!")

-argues onfield with his captain too often.

-on PF Sat night, 2011, appeared on "Before The Game" and dismissed our Rd 24 effort against Collingwood (where we won by 96 points), as "Collingwood putting the cue in the rack". I don't know if I would want a player dismissing our Grand Final opponents the next weekend so flippantly, especially a club who make teams who don't show them respect, pay!

Shaw has gone on to become an All Australian in 2015 & 2016 while also winning a B&F over the last three seasons.

Yep, dodged a bullet.

You went here Bob to incite a reaction.
Im leaving your OP but the rest is gone.

Yes, Shaw has gone on to be a good addition. Discuss that.

You can discuss that - but not as part of burning others at the stake for it.

GO Catters

Blame our recruiting sector for not seeing and simply being below the one GWS has.

It goes Hmac then Clark then Aaron Black. I think our coach always chooses silver over gold because he's one of those weirdos that has an urge to do everything unconventionally. To prove some anti-cultural indie point or something.

A bit like our Hine who goes for left field selections rather than the bleeding obvious.

Black at least was essentially free. Didn't hurt our trade or draft position one bit.

Getting back to Shaw. I'm glad we have Tuohy instead tbh. Tuohy is exactly what we needed, pace, elite disposal, and can get the pill.

I think we have traded well to get Dangerfield, Henderson and Tuohy. They are A-graders.

Tuohy's nowhere near as good as Shaw.

Shaw is a good player also, not denying that. However, he is 31 now, and he probably played his best season last year, so despite defying the odds of an ageing body he is still playing great, but let's assess Tuohy vs Shaw at the end of this season. Tuohy has stepped up in the Geelong environment, so I think you will see a similar output from both players, Tuohy being 4 years younger, I know who I would select.
