Come one guys we're not seriously doing the "I'd take our player in a given position over the best player in the league in that position" are we?

Ryder is a very good ruckman and his return will make us a better side. Gawn is the best ruckman in the league, and he's not just a tap ruckman.

Has Ryder ever played a full season as a pure out and out ruck like Gawn last year? Certainly not recently and these are his prime years. If Ryder produces the football he did on the weekend regularly then there is no reason why he can't be as good as any ruck in the league.

Actually, on this.

Aaron Sandilands circa 2010, or Brendan Lade circa 2006?

I think it's Sandilands comfortably.

Sandilands pros:
- More ball
- Twice as many hitouts
- More clearances

Lade pros:
- Many more marks

Both kicked essentially the same return in front of goal.

For the 'Ryder offers more around the ground' crew, last year Gawn averaged 14.4 disposals (Ryder has never averaged), 3.6 tackles (Ryder hasn't averaged since 2010), and 2.1 contested marks (Ryder has never even gotten close to averaging). That's to go with an average of 42 hitouts (Ryder's career best is 26).

Don't assume that just because Ryder is more athletic that he offers more aroun the ground. Dean Cox wasn't any more athletic than Gawn. Brendon Lade wasn't any more athletic than Gawn. Majak Daw is probably the best athlete in the ruck division and he struggles to get a game.

If my aunt had balls there's no reason she couldn't be my uncle.

This is incredibly reminiscent of the Essendon supporters who tried to argue that Scott Lucas was just as good as Tredrea.

Could Ryder have a better season than Gawn? It's possible. Is it right to say that on the available evidence he is a more valuable ruckman than Gawn right now? lolle.

I stated my reason for picking Ryder over Gawn and it wasn't based solely on Ruck he's a more versatile player, if you want the out n' out ruckman you'd go with Gawn.

Which flog has GWS missing the finals?

Bet it was Cotchin.
The captains are not allowed to vote for their own side so every other captain, Cotchin included, voted for GWS

well there is 18 teams so if everyone selected them then theyd have 17 not 16 so so someone didnt rate them

Is he though? Schulzenfest has established that Gawn is more prolific around the ground, and last year he kicked 16 goals. In 2015, Ryder kicked 18 goals. Hardly a marked superiority in key forward play.

I don't like having to talk Ryder down because he's a terrific ruckman and I can't wait for his return, but again, this is like when Essendon supporters tried to argue that they'd prefer Scott Lucas over Tredrea.

Who do you think will win the 2017 Brownlow Medal?

Patrick Dangerfield (Geelong, five votes), Marcus Bontempelli (Western Bulldogs, two votes), Dan Hannebery (Sydney, two votes), Dustin Martin (Richmond, two votes), Lance Franklin (Sydney, one vote), Max Gawn (Melbourne, one vote), Luke Shuey (West Coast, one vote), Rory Sloane (Adelaide, one vote), Adam Treloar (Collingwood, one vote), Callan Ward (GWS, one vote), Jobe Watson (Essendon, one vote).

:D

Not really Ryder has played quality football in Ruck, at CHB & as a Key Forward over the journey that's why I'd take him.. anyway I'm done with it, just a personal preference not a slight against Gawn at all.

this is hyperbole

I've no argument with Gawn being the best ruckman in the league last season but he's been on an afl list for 8 years and has played 61 games and has had one really outstanding season. He may go on to become one of the modern greats if his form continues but at the moment your comparison to Lucas v Tredrea is premature.

Again, Justin Westhoff is a more versatile tall forward than Josh J Kennedy. Doesn't make him a better player.

And the Crows board is a bit further up if you want to start acting like good players from your team are better than legit stars of the competition.

Ryder's best ever haul is 27. 21 the next best. Even in the 3 dimensional whiteboard of Janus' delusions, Stats really don't back up that Ryder is a better player than Gawn.

Never said he was a better player. I said I'd rather have Ryder than Gawn, purely because he's a genuine dual position player that can actually change the dynamic of our forward line because he's so much more than a resting ruck.

You wanna play a standard structure, Gawn's your guy. You wanna play something a bit different, it's Paddycake all the way.

Sometimes an oak is better than a willow.

Imo our neighbours think they're better than what they are. I very rarely watch them so maybe i'm wrong but where i'm
coming from is how the good teams of '15 & '16 towelled them up in September. Sure they got over Nth Melb in the
elim final but hearing 'Kingy' blow smoke up their arse makes me smile. They're on a hiding to nothing which will make
any failure of theirs all the sweeter.

I watch most of their games, they are pretty good. Just when you think they are on the ropes they rally well and have enough to up their game when neccesary through the likes of Betts.
They have solid contributors throughout the team and don't seem to have the obvious gaps that we have (when we need to play the likes of S.Gray and A'Chee).

Do they havee the pure gumption of a Sydney? No, they are slick, organised and excellent footballers, but they don't have the next level of toughness, hence the finals mis steps.
