I get what you're saying...really for the AFL it's a case by case scenario.

If the player has to retire for a legitimate reason like mental health and decides that on their own, i'm with you.
And if that happens to Buddy the AFL will probably allow it.

However, at the time they wanted to ensure Swans knew what they were getting themselves into and not trying to exploit a loophole...eg simply offering Franklin 9 years so that Hawthorn wouldn't match, when say, the club and Buddy had already had an 'agreement' he would really only play 6 then retire.
You can see how clubs could use it the other way to abuse it so they don't have to pay for the player.

Completely agree that steps to prevent abuse need to be in place But to me it kind of shows how ridiculous the whole situation is - that a player like buddy might have to collide with another team to get where he wants to go

Anyways, if they are going to include the entire contract in the cap no matter what, can't really be any else to do

Someone tell me why cunningham is not in the conversation . Can kick on both sides is quick , tackles hard adequate disposals what is he not doing to warrant a call up ? I had hopes for that kid

Definitely dont give up hope kid can play.

Must need to do something more for Bolts. Im not a big fan of it though. I want him in the side regardless. Need to get games into him.

Hasn't earned it in VFL. I thought he was good in JLT and stiff to miss round 1, but has not kicked the door down since.

Rather, when it was unrealistic to expect that Buddy would play the full 9 years.

On the Carlton podcast, Maher inferred that coaching staff want him to be 100% good to go. A previous poster has mentioned he lacks confidence and, putting the two together makes sense. But it's all just rumour.

Ablett not retiring. He might agree to play for less. Don't know how that affects Suns or Cats respective salary cap.
My understanding is that Ablett is due to get around $1Mill from G.C. in 2018. If he were to be traded to Geelong then he would still be due the $1Mill as it would be under G.C. salary cap. Clearly Geelong cant fit that in their cap and as such G.C. would probably have to pay about half and G.C. half to make it work. Hard to imagine how that can be a good deal for the Gold Coast - they would be far better off just keeping him.

I am going in at 12.30 just to watch it.
If anything to report will on Sunday night unless I am depressed by our game.
Cheers... I don't know if HBF is going to be going in early, but I am sure that he will be waiting for your report :D

Sure and they should be held to the contract as long as the player wants to play. The lure is long term certainty.

But if the player themselves retires, the player has effectively breached the contract. There is no way the clubs should be punished for that. What are they supposed to do? Force the player to keep playing?

Grey area. What would stop the GCS securing ablett for 5 years at huge coin and then "ägree" that he "refuses "to play in his 6th year. They "ägree" that GCS will continue to pay the contract until a new club comes along to take over his contract. If injuries or form prevents this from happening, then the GCS wears the damage.

Yep. Do folks around here remember the Kouta contract? and subsequent shit storm with Collins asking everyone to take a pay cut.. There are massive risks with these types of contracts..

We offered Kouta some good dough pre his knee injuries that then went on to provide us with issues few years later.. Now I know the Buddy and Sydney situation is different cause of the length of the contract but I think there's learnings there.. Learnings like.. Long, expensive contracts have rarely translated into premierships.. Except for Tom Boyd and the bulldogs of course.. That being said.. The Bulldogs won a flag cause of some sensational Scott Clayton recruitment..

These deals are normally better to sell memberships than delivering flags. Buddy hasnt played in a flag since leaving Hawthorn.. Meanwhile Tom Mitchell needs to look elsewhere cause there's no money left..

Exact opposite of what I want Carlton to do over the next 5-6 years..

If it fails you look like a fool, if it comes off you look like a genius.

You're missing the point entirely. That's irrelevant and comes into the risk of the offer. Life isn't fair. You make a bad investment it's your fault. Not the investments fault for failing. It comes into the initial risk assessment and if a club ****s it up. They are responsible.

Its only taxi licence holders that get the best of both worlds

Ablett is on a new contract from his FA one to GC so if the club and he agree they can simply rip it up and if he wants to go to Geelong for say 300k then he can do it and he is off GC's books.
Franklin is different because he was a FA and it affects compo and teams ability to match bids.

What would he know. The majority on bigfooty agree that we are miles away and at least 2020 before finals . FWIW I agree with Roos
I'm thinking we are actually a few years off and it wouldn't surprise me if we haven't hit rock bottom just yet and SOS tries to cash in on our last real assets in Gibbs and Kruezer. I did hear the other day though that of the Dogs premiership side 12 of the 22 had played under 40 games at the start of last season so thing can turn around very quickly

Agree Soap, but he will have learnt from last time. If there is any further negotiations, Gibbs management will have the deal done and dusted well before any rumours start.

If Adelaide had not been such w***ers last year they would have done a "Geelong/Henderson" and had the deal put to bed with SOS 2 months prior to the trade period starting.

They tried to be smart arses and SOS told them to **** off.
