Apparently, list managers are paid good money to sit in empty rooms with a solitary light bulb, and the Penski file in front of them, and in late August they suddenly say "Oh shit!", and start frantically looking through the white pages for player agents...
The money ain't that great Eldorado

Shem never did much for me, this Nash kid on the other hand... Lots of promise! Not only was he a star Gaelic/Rugby player back in Ireland (probably the best background you could have as a non-AFL player), he's also a switched on kid. I remember reading that he was going to study medicine before coming over to be a category B rookie with the Hawks.

Not to mention superman-like physical attributes! Quick, tall and strong - plus from all reports he loves the tough stuff and has great foot skills.

If Nash has superman like physical attributes what did the Shemanator have or should that be Shematron.

Godzilla meets that comic book bloke made out of bricks, what was he called? ...The Thing.

I can understand a Gaelic footballer chancing his arm in the AFL but it's interesting that Nash played age group rugby for Ireland and was offered a place with Leinster, there's scope to earn a lot more money that way in a sport he's already proficient at in a worldwide game that has a world cup.

I'd love to know why he chose the challenge to come over. Glad he did but just curious.

Similarly Shem should probably have just stuck at league rather than miss out on some key development years, but it is a pretty basic sport as a forward so it's probably not too hard to remember how to run straight at an equally big fella with no thoughts about passing the ball.

Shem was probably a bit too solid to develop into the level of athlete AFL football requires.

I think he may just be that type of kid from what I've been told, wanted a change and challenged himself to meet the rigors. From reading about the two Irish kids, apparently they did a majority of the pre-season - much more than the regular draftees did. Also; I guess though there's scope to earn more money, there's less opportunity given the big money is earned at the national level.

Hang on - Burton and Mitchell have 'marginally' stronger claims to being rated more than promising? Man, I thought I could be cautious and negative - but you, sir, take the cake!
These guys are great players given us supporters hope looking ahead but are they good enough to take us to our next flag ? After all that's what it's about silverware , only time will tell this has been a no pressure nothing to lose season for those guys . I look at the 2001 preliminary final against the bombers just over kick away from another GF appearance every reason for optimism with a young group like we had , who would've thought that 7 years later we win another flag but in between that time we just miss out on the wooden spoon and had years where the team was as bad as at any other time in history when our team was not successful . More importantly the group that won in 2008 was barely recognisable from the group that played in that 2001 prelim ( only Crawford and Croad still there from memory) , I find that quite significant because that 2001 group for the most part weren't old and you would of thought that they were going to eventually be the group that was going to win us our next flag but it disintegrated all in the space of 1or 2 years and we had to have a total rebuild . I know I'm cautious but blind optimism has bought supporters a lot of disappointment just look at Collingwood .

Clarko today said possible flag within 3-4 years

Even if thats wrong and your high water mark is richmond like you still have Mitchell Omeara Burton Howe O'Brien Brand Ceglar Hardwick and possibly still servicable Gunston Smith Bruest etc so then it again wont be a full rebuild

OK some of those will be gone and some will come in from outside.

It's a fairly good proposition the alternate clear out and full rebuild seems much more risky

Next year big Rough will be the only survivor from Clarkos first season

130 pages in and I'm still waiting for Halfbackdasher to nominate a player so I can take it to the bank.
Need less musings and more I got the heads up from player A's cousins girlfriend that he once thought about following Hawthorn as a kid but didn't, he now wishes he did so as payback he wants to play for us.

Fremantle superstar Nathan Fyfe has finally agreed to terms on a lucrative new contract to end all speculation he could walk out as a free agent at the end of this season.

His announcement to stay at Fremantle comes ahead of Sunday's 46th Western Derby against bitter enemy West Coast, and after almost a year of uncertainty that one of the biggest stars in Australian sport would stay in the west.

Fyfe has accepted a deal estimated to be in the region of $1.4 million a season and around up to $6 million if his terms are over four years.

Never really entertained any thoughts of getting Fyfe.

He can compare Silverware with Pav when he retires.

This is how I see it too. Only a small % of Irish rugby would make it to really big money, whereas in Aussie ruler a lot of players can make very good money, but few can make millions.

There must be some attraction for the Irish lads as the numbers seem to be on the increase each year.

I believe we also encouraged Nash to continue his uni studies in Melbourne as well. I have belief in the young man and believe he ticks all the right boxes.

South East Coast of Ireland or the South East Coast of Australia, it's a pretty easy choice if you ask me.

$1.4m per year. Wowee. The Dockers would want him to be in 2015 form for the majority of his contract for that not to become a list management burden.

Pretty disappointed with the news, it means we're more likely to pick up Martin or Rockliff neither of whom I want at Hawthorn.
