Why are you even interested in Gaff? I don't have stats but he seems to only play well in the bigger grounds like Subi. Seems to get lost in the confines of Etihad.

Gaff's career disposal average at Etihad (22 games): 26.64
Gaff's career disposal average at Subiaco (84 games): 25.17

I'm all for arguing that we shouldn't be trading for Gaff, but the idea that he's just good on the "wide open spaces of Subiaco" just isn't borne out by the numbers.

I cringe when I read posts of people wanting Gaff. Genuine downhill skier.
Opposition fans said the same thing about NDS for years while he played for us

But what happen happens if we off 7 and they accept?

We have paid overs and then we are stuck with him.

There'd have to be ways to do it without 'legally binding' so to speak.

Gaff is a very good player and would improve our side a lot, that's not the issue.

A great deal for us would be 1 first rounder, that's not going to happen WC will want more you can bet on that.

Then there's the matter of his contract, gaff is a free agent next year he will rightly want a big payday which he will probably get without too many problems.

So here's the issue with gaff is he worth a first rounder plus a player or another pick and a contract of 4 years plus at a minimum of 750 - 800 thousand.

I admit he isnt our first preferred option but we need to find somewhere in our list the potential of covering Joeys 23+ disposals , Roo's 40+ goals & 9 marks per game , Dempsters ability to lock down a 3rd tall forward .
Our kids are coming along but not quick enough to cover those losses .
And even if we cover all that will probably still see us miss the 8 .

thanks for the stats. You make a good argument - I was basing my observations on the "eye" test. To me he never seems to be as effective at Etihad. Disposal stats don't tell the whole story.
Wouldn't Billings be better as the link-man type? Or Savage?
Have no idea of their aerobic capacity though

A big difference with that side is 5 X top 5 picks, plus lenny hayes & timing our bottoming out to coincide with a super draft which gave us Dal Santo and Montagna late, as opposed to 2014 which is looking like a pretty ordinary draft now and our 2 first rounders from that year can't even get on the park.

We don't have anywhere near the level of raw talent on the list currently, so "natural improvement" isn't going to explode like 2004.

Get over the first round picks thing, how many games did DalSanto get tagged out. Kosi was an ineffective **** forward in 2004 . Acres got more of the ball this year than Goddard did in 2004. It doesn't make them better, its just where they were picked.

Given their age significant improvement can occur in most of the following, some of them getting close to the magic 50 games.
Gresham.
Billings
Sinclair
Steele
Acres
McKenzie
Longer
Maybe even Dunstan

CRINGE:

Despite his off field issues, people are criminally underrating what Stringer is capable of. He can be the difference if he gets his shit together.

Oh come save us from ourselves, Lord Stringer. Your 13 possession, 1 goal 3 bottom 4 team beat downs will take us to the promise land.

I think you're right valuing hickey around pick 27.
Unfortunately though he's contracted so it's not a fire sale situation.
He's worth more to us as backup- there's a big gap on our list to our 3rd best ruckman.

Unless we had a seriously raging boner for someone with pick 2, we wouldn't let hickey go for just 'fair' or 'ok' value.

Fair enough. I expect Martin to be at the Lions next year, so we're probably not in the hunt for a replacement ruck anyway.

Yeap deal sounds good to us and values Hickey about right (mid second round). Would be great if it happened. Let's hope Rocky gets a mil a year to get it done :p

Yep, it looked about right to me value-wise as well. Probably all going to remain hypothetical though.

I would do that in a heartbeat. Not so sure you'll get a compensation pick at #2 though, as your list just isn't that bad after last years haul. I reckon you might get one at 19 though.

I doubt we'd let Rocky go (RFA) unless Gil had given us the all clear that it would generate pick 2. Otherwise we'd just match the offer and keep him, or match the offer and force a trade. I can't see us letting him go if pick 19 is the compo. FWIW I expect him to stay. I think the club are happy to let him explore his options as there's a chance it nets us pick 2 (and he gets some great coin, so win-win).

Slightly off topic, I've been thinking about the fact that we may not be able to bring in a player to get us to 105% of the salary cap, therefore losing our ability to use 105% over 2019/20 as well. Hypothetically speaking, are we able to then front end the current contracts we have on our books in 2018, so that we meet the 105% and conversely drop back to 95% in 2019/20 where we can offer a lucrative deal to a free agent or OOC star?
