Excellent overall haul. Rayner could be anything and should put bums on seats, just hope we can retain him. He seems a very bubbly personality and I have been told he is very liked at his school.

Really excited about Zac Bailey. Was playing against men up in Darwin at 16. Tough kid who goes in hard and wins contested ball. One for the future and being from the top end we shouldn't have any issues with retaining him. Starcevich was a bit of a shock but will back in our recruiters. Again with the family link at the club you would think he won't be a travel risk. I really liked the selection of Wooler. He will take time to develop but he could be handy selection in a few years. Getting Ballenden so late is a massive win. Trading Schache who didn't want to be at the club for those two picks turned out to be a smart move. Ballenden and Payne will take time but that's fine we shouldn't need to be rushing them into the 22 anytime soon.

Good nights work. Bring on 2018.

The cream of our youth stocks are shaping up to be a very exciting young group: Andrews, Hipwood, McCluggage, Berry, Witherden and Rayner. I think that group of 6 would stack up well in a "Name your top 6 young players" thread on the main board.

Not too mention the likes of Mathieson, Keays, Skinner, Cox, Allison and all of our other draftees from tonight. They have all either shown exciting signs already and/or are super talented.

Exciting times ahead for Lions fans!

Bailey has a touch of Viney about him.

I've no doubt Rayner, Bailey and Starc will develop into great onballers but they are listed at fwd/mids (and then we went for three KPPs). I know that listing is arbitrary but it feels a bit at odds with our need for midfielders?
It's just the listing. Bailey and Starevich definitely midfielders. Here's what AFL draft central said re Starevich. Note that's he seriously fast and has a good tank (yo yo test):
#42 Brandon STARCEVICH
Balanced Midfielder (East Perth/Western Australia)
24/07/1999 | 186.6cm | 84.4kg

Scouting notes: A strong riser in the second half of the year where he can attack a stoppage at speed and clear the ball out reasonably effective by foot. Finished the season on a high with 18 disposals and four inside 50s in the Under 18 All Stars game at the MCG on Grand Final day. Possesses elite speed and agility, with his inside game are area that has improved. Not a big ball winner.

Strengths: Versatile, speed, agility
Improvements: Inside game, consistency, ball winning

Combine test results: 20m Sprint (secs) 2.87 | Agility (secs) 8.08 | Yo-Yo Test (level) 21.1

I think Cameron Rayner could be the pick of the bunch this year. Reminds me of Christian Petracca. Can play as a dangerous mid-sized forward(He kicked bags of 7 and 5 goals in back to back games as an underager in the TAC Cup in 2016) but he also has the ability to play through the midfield. His strengths from limited vision include his aerial ability, he has clean hands and can take a strong mark, his speed, agility and power, he has that ability to burst out of a pack and lay a big fend off and he is quite skilful as well with a long booming kick and he can use his left boot and he has a bit of x factor about him as well. I think he could be a real game changing type who can win a game in a quarter like a Dustin Martin who can go though the midfield and win several clearances and then go forward and kick multiple goals.

He is a really exciting prospect and it will be interesting to see how he develops this year. A few highlights videos for those looking to get an early glimpse at one of this years draft prospects:

Just want to take this opportunity to pump my own tires a little bit. Post number 15 on page 1 in this thread posted on feb 7th. Called it:D

If you look at our offseason like the stockmarket we had a bit of a shocker. Sold low and bought high. But overall we have added what we thought we needed at the club. We have added goal scoring potential in our forward half (Raynor and Cameron). Pace (Cameron, Bailey and Starc). Experiance (Hodge). Hard at it future mids (Bailey and Starc). Also managed to grab another batch of promising talls (Ballenden, Payne and Woller).
The list is starting to feel quite balanced now.

Geelong, Port Adelaide and Hawthorn consistently pick up sliders (the "bargains") with their middle-lower picks, other clubs focused more on potential. We drafted a few sliders in the last 2 or 3 drafts, this year a slightly different approach, I wonder if it's a Noble influence coming from Adelaide, or if Conole just saw it differently this year.

Starc played a great all stars game.

I'v just gone through and watched a heap of his videos. Highlights are just that, but two things that are evident across the board is his quick decision making and his ability to kick low darts. With some good development and coaching he will only get better. He looks a player. A nice surprise who I can't wait to see develop!

In reality we probably could’ve got Bailey and Starcevich with later picks but they have a huge amount of potential and could be amazing midfielders in a few years.

Funny he said 'happy to be on the east coast, its not too far'.. sounds like east coast is a second option to Melbourne with the young Guys. Spose 2:45 flight to brisbane is less than the 6 hours to Perth

Our fitness personnel are going to have their work cut out getting Payne and Rayner up to speed.

Both will need a lot of work.

When you say up to speed do you mean actual speed or endurance? Certainly not worried about their speed off the mark.

Feels like an "Elliot Yeo" kind of pick

That was considered a bit of a left fielder at the time but we had actually nailed it.

Pity Yeo repaid our faith in him by buggering off on us.

Let's hope Starc sticks around. Got a good vibe about this one.
