According to the afl draft calculator Naish was picked using the equivalent of pick 47, I think he's more talented than the average late 40s pick.

A breakdown of our list post draft. Not often a reigning premier would have 30 players still 25 or younger on their list. It suggests that we're in for an era of sustained success. The draft also balanced out our list nicely. 4 dedicated rucks 4 dedicated KPF and 4 dedicated KPD. We also added another inside mid and some more outside class. With 40 on the senior list and 3 rookies I expect we'll take Derek Smith in the rookie draft to round out the list for the 2018 season.

Cheers for posting that, 23 players with less than 50 games to thier name plus the rookies we take. very bright future ahead.

So does anyone know how many Rookie selections we have/or will use?

We only have 1 regular rookie spot left, but then can take Cat B rookies as well.
Will be interesting to see what happens with Smith and the Irish kid we were linked to

IBut what it does highlight is that we probably need a KPD, a KPF about Riewoldts size, and a 200cm KPF.

Naish, another mid, and the best rookie available.

Our recruits need to be
195cm + athletic freaks
Genuine line breakers with endurance
Pure footballers

Nothing inbetween, no oscar Allen, Ben Lennon types need apply

I like our approach to the draft.

Pick 17: A slider no matter what position they play
Pick 20: A need (ruckman)
Pick 25: A need (a tall)
Pick 53 (34): F/S (outside midfielder)
Pick 55 (63): A need (a tall)

In fact, I like our approach to the entire trade/draft period. I am happy that this club has become a cool-headed club that know and address what they need. I expected them to have a two-phase replenishment of our list through the draft by taking the smalls/midfielders last year and talls/midfielders this year, and I am happy that they did that even though they won the 2017 Premiership. They did not let the Premiership blind them from what they need to pick up through the draft.

The only thing left for us to take in the draft down the track is a tall midfielder, which is something that we haven't picked up yet. It isn't a pressing need though since we have the likes of Townsend, Martin and Grigg on the list.

Anyone watching last night just sit back in amazement at the shit that was coming out of David kings mouth? Unbelievable, he fancies himself a junior and draft expert now. All he sees is numbers and in every one of our finals he read the numbers wrong and went for the opposition.

He blocked me on twitter (wasn't even abusive) when I called him out on the shit he was talking before the Geelong game when he stated the vision he'd roll at 1030 after the game that will tell the story why we lost (by not playing a second tall).

With five new faces and rookies still to come, here’s how I think we might line up in 2018:

BEST 22:

B: Grimes Astbury Vlastuin
HB: Houli Rance BEllis
C: Lambert Cotchin CEllis
HF: Edwards Caddy Rioli
F: Bolton Riewoldt Townsend
R: Nankervis Martin Prestia
IC: Grigg, Graham, Conca, Higgins

VFL:

B: Garthwaite Broad Short
HB: Markov Balta McIntosh
C: Menadue Miles Naish
HF: Castagna Griffiths Butler
F: Miller Moore Stengle
R: Hampson Drummond Lloyd
IC: Chol, Soldo, Coleman-Jones, Rookies


Broad, Castagna, Butler and McIntosh are the casualties that I think will get passed by C Ellis, Conca, Higgins and Bolton. Man, how’s that for depth?

Depending on our opposition and how Nank is holding up is expect us to rotate our tall stocks and bring in Hampson, Griff and Moore when needed. Balta could be the surprise here given he’s already at 195cm/92kgs and then throw in a solid preseason.

The big mover of the year will be Drummond cementing himself as an in and out midfielder once he finally gets a decent crack at it without injury.

By end of the year I think we’ll throw Butler up as trade bait given our surplus stocks. Rioli, Bolton and Higgins have more upside. And Castagna if he can work on his skills has more versatility. Hampson will retire and Chol moved on. The rest? Well, it’s guess work from here. Can’t wait to see what 2018 has in store.

Reads the play well...great ( intercept and contested) mark...sets up play beautifully...just like Rancei

Nah, I think Balta is not necessarily a consumate defender like Rance.

I would not pidgeon role Balta for a while if ever.


I would play him in a ruck hybrid role, maybe at FF or even wing, just do not restrict him, see how he goes.

Do not want us to upset our backline necessarily either at the moment.

Starts in the 2's and see what happens but Miller could do anything to and CCJ looks to have a few string so anything could happen.

Biggest at risk would be Hampson and then possibly later Griffiths with CCJ, Miller and Balta although Griffiths flexibility can complement CCJ as well as Balta and or Miller like our small forward inclusions helped each other\

We may not need another ruck type for another 6 years!!!
