Calling out the weak SANFL development clubs

Short sighted if SANFL clubs think that being a pathway to the AFL has no benefit. Personally I would like to see the AFL fund one or two SA teams into the TAC. Most kids are not physically ready for SANFL, but the competitions they do play in dont seem to be strong enough to optimize their development. The TAC seems to be clearly the highest standard of competition that a 17 or 18 year old can get.

Imagine if all of this years draft kids from fogarty to mcpherson and all the others had all played together in the same team in a high calibre competition like the TAC. Cant help but think they would be better for it. Those that dont make the AFL could then enter the SANFL system and be better players than they might have been otherwise.

Fogarty McPherson Ballard wouldn't have played they are private school kids you have read how their students play college firsts whether football or cricket haven't you

And I would be interested to know if Fogarty was on a football scholarship at rostrevor as a number of private schools offer them and they are expected to play their first

You beat me to it.... think 2 teams north/south or east/west don't matter because we are getting left behind in the standard of juniors coming through imo.

Thats a fair point. But having an SA TAC team would change the dynamic. Parents would ultimately be able to decide you would think. The kids themselves would also be pushing for what they want.

No way you have had no dealings with these schools

If you choose or want to send your kids to these schools it's their way or the highway

There is no compromise

There was an intriguing, insightful (and rather concerning) thread about grassroots footy in SA on this board a few months ago. I recommend reading it (can't remember the exact thread name but it can't be more than a few pages back).
This one...

This thread probably just a continuation of that.

Rubbish

The SANFL receive money to develop the sport to get as many kids playing as possible whether they can kick 5 m or 50 m it's about the sport not the very very very tiny minority that make the elite game

Don't you get it are you a bit simple

They recieve money to develop pathways for the kids in their zone.
Who else do you think does it? You forgotten how the SANFL told you they needed the 15 million from AO for development?
Dont whine when the talent drops off even further than it has now.
Simple people end up with poor results. Your support of a failing system is simple.

Why not think laterally and have a joint SANFL and College competition.

Public schools vs private schools boys and then they get drafted or join an SANFL Club.
1) North
2) East
3) South
4) west
5) City

6) PAC
7) Blackfriars
8) Scotch College
9) Trinity
10) ????

With about 10 to 15 kids might get drafted and only half of these succeed you want to throw thousands at 7 or 8 individuals against thousands of players who enjoy the sport and actually go onto to follow it because the enjoy it so much.

In an environment of piss poor development we get 10 players a year drafted. With proper development that number would be 20.
Remember, a rising tide lifts all boats. So with the extra development pathways, those kids that dont get drafted will have a better development themselfs which benefits the SANFL clubs that they remain with after not getting drafted.
You bitch and moan about us missing out on Burton, well with better development there would be more Burtons for us to draft.

Only 70 kids were drafted yesterday Australia wide we are but 7% of the population

I am not saying you are wrong. Only that having TAC teams in Adelaide would change the dynamic. You could start to see the number of kids being drafted from private schools drop and the majority then coming out of the TAC teams. You would see a dynamic change where public schools might then become the better pathway to AFL. I have no clue how the private schools think and I would imagine that footy is a low priority in terms of what attracts parents to send their kids there. But it may give pause for thought. I imagine having Darcy Fogarty in your kids class would do no harm. That might not happen again.

The private schools don't need to they have their own comp

Sacred heart
Saints
PAC
Rostrevor
St Mick's
Immanuel
Scotch
CBC

They host each other with lunch provided for the supporters

They don't want or need the rif raf

It's a little bit of a prestigious circle which is why they pay high profile coaches give out scholarships and want to beat their fellow private schools they could invite Henley High who have a great program but why would they do that

I can tell you if you are prepared to pay $20k for fees you aren't too worried about Fogarty in your kids class or you could be paying 30k at scotch

Private schools are paying scholarships and good dollars to coaches it's a closed comp that they all want to win

I used to play for school on Saturday afternoons and Sturt on Sundays

Most on here would have zero idea on how much control the private schools have SANFL play second fiddle to these players college is first training is compulsory

And if you want to go to the school you do as they say

No different in cricket from what I've read

It's pretty full on

CBC are most definitely not in that list. They would be Div 2 at their very best.

The schools often end up playing Henley in the knockout finals. Henley rarely win though. Normally PAC or SHC knock them off in the semi or grand final. Henley are certainly around the same level though, probably just not a professionally run.

My experience was that the school always came first in all sport. We had great facilities and ex SANFL players as teachers and coaches. My PE teacher and U15 coach was Chicken Hayes (lol).

Also played cricket for Sturt until Year 11. Before that it was school cricket in the morning, district cricket in the afternoon.

There ya go plenty of money attached to private schools

Brett chalmers doesn't coach for free

I would love to know if Fogarty was on a scholarship as a boarder your talking $40k per year minimum

There are kids on scholarships though at a few of them

Only 1 on a football scholarship in my year. Most of the scholarships were partial, not full. A lot of boarders from the SE though.
