Not even any upgrades for medical / fitness team? Please.

Unless it's Weber being replaced I think those are the sort of appointments that wouldn't even warrant a public mention from the top brass. Do you ever recall a club statement about the appointment of docs or physios before?

Fwiw I know some people who've worked with Weber and they speak very highly of him.

Abbasolutely. The best Foot manager is Neile Balme. He left Collingwood at end of 2006 and arrived at Cattery after huge blood letting in Footy dept with Bomber Thompson surviving but all other assistant Gorn. Balme oversaw 3 Flags in 5 years and his return to Colon Wood wasn't successful being shafted fro Graeme Allen who got suspended for the GWS Drug Fiasco. Anyway Balmy ends up at the Tigers where surprise surprise all assistants Gornski except Dima Hardwick and now only one game away from a GF appearance. Either he's touched or a very shrewd, smart operator & ruthless I think its the latter.

Bond has been at Dockers what nearly 10yrs we are going thru our second rebuild - he's an average performer like his playing days and like some of his assistants ie Prior, Hale Rock, Guerra. Need to find the best Football Operations Manager who will work with Lyon but also who has the pedigree to challenge him on footy philosophy and team selections etc etc.

Brisbane went and head hunted Noble from Crows as a very good Footy Operation manager and I will not be surprised to see Lions make steady progress up the ladder in next 2-3 Yrs.

I reckon Marcus Ashcroft will get the Bullet from Gold coast been there from the start and they have under achieved. Footy OP manger can't be a job for life if the results ain't there- Chris Bond!!

There it is Ashcroft given the Lemon and Sarse - under achievement. Why should coaches and assistant be the only ones given the flick.

I agree but the under achieving at GC was a whole other level than our under achieving in the last few years.

And tbf, the football dept is comprised of coaching, players, recruitment/list management and sports science and not all of those depts have been poor for us whereas at GC they have. Bondy's got a couple of areas performing. Well, maybe one...

No changes to coaching staff is a worry. Kirk and Lloyd departing has proven to be big losses.

Lukey Mac has been appointed as a specialist defensive coach for part of the pre-season. Working closely with Logue, Pearce, Hamling, Ryan and Johnson

Please please please make this a permanent role Freo. Far and away the best defender that ever played for our club, and he played in Lyon's system. We never recovered from his retirement

Do his job on Hamling. He's an exact carbon copy of Mcpharlin, tenacious, fast and can take marks. Exciting for him to mentor Joel.

Only a short term job for Luke. The article says he has a Pharmacy job at Fiona Stanley starting in the new year. Perhaps he will be available to help out as required during the season from time to time.

On this subject there hasn’t been a replacement for the departing Stone?

Also isn’t there a new conditioning assistant working with and under Weber?

No, he's not.

Macpharlin was a better one on one defender, was All Australian, could go forward, kick goals and offered something on the way out.

Hamling is an effective stopper when not on gorilla's and does not have an AA upside.

Yeah it's a bit unfair to put a developing player alongside a champion. I'm not sure what Hamling's ceiling is, but probably not AA.

Only one of them has a premiership medal though

I didn't rate Hamling at all until watching that finals series and then I was a convert. He's only 24. He's had to hold up our backline single handedly at times. Way too premature to compare him to McPharlin.

Good enough to win a premiership. Seriously has already proven he has what it takes to do what we need him to.

AA is nice, but I don't give a hoot if they overlook the whole team for AA if we win a flag.

As much as a I love Macca who of course is an absolute Freo champion, Hamling has already made a stronger contribution in finals than the former ever did. He, along with the team Doggies defence, kept some the best KPFs at bay when it really counted. The likes of Kennedy, Cameron and Buddy. And he starred while doing it.

If Freo get good enough again, I see no reason why he couldn’t get an AA along the way.

That’s kinda like saying Grigg is better than Fyfe. Played well in the finals and won a flag. WTF does that have to do with comparing individuals? You gotta get to finals first. I’ld take individuals that play well over 22 weeks than players that can have a good 3-4 week spell at the right time of year. Loved Lukey MAC, love Hammer, but AP will leave them both in his wake of awesomeness

My comments weren't meant to infer that Hamling is better than Macca. At this stage he's not.

However imo he does have the potential to be as good as Macca and to get an AA, with the key evidence being his 2016 finals campaign and to a lesser extent his great year with us in 2017. He has more improvement to achieve in the meantime though.

I do highly value a purple patch in finals; especially in his position where you can get found out pretty easily. They were four sudden death games with the Bullies going in as underdog in each one.

McPharlin is one of the best defenders in the last ten years. He was an absolute freak who’ll never be replaced. I do however think that perhaps our other defenders other than Hamling may be better than guys like Dawson, Grover and Silvagni, perhaps even all at a level similar to what Johnson and Tarrant were. Having three good talls in defence at once will be huge and will be what we use to get to levels we had when McPharlin was playing for us. A lot was made about Richmonds small forwards and Rance but imo Rance wouldn’t be half the player he is if he didn’t have Astbury and Grimes helping him out.
