I’m amazed the non-Vic clubs didn’t fight harder to have the GF go to the home ground of the highest ranked team.

It would be an enormously difficult thing to do but considering the benefits of it worth pursuing.
It should be rotated between the MCG, Optus and Adelaide Oval and if the home team happens to be playing in the game then so be it. Locking it in at the MCG creates a far too big and undeserved advantage and disadvantage for certain teams.

I’d like to see someone actually debate Gil on this as it would become clear pretty quick that there’s no real justifiable argument for it (apart from $$) compared to implementing a different and more fair system.

One of the better suggestions posted here. I think an element of getting lucky enough to have the game at your ground is acceptable, but to just get it by default is utter garbage. I'm amazed all the non vic clubs haven't fought way harder and united to kick up a stink and force the AFL to come up with something much more equitable.

It's a good suggestion but ignores the commercial element that no afl CEO is going to forego for the sake of fairness

Considerably less seats and moving it away from one of the more populous cities in Australia, and a corporate hub to boot, just isn't going to happen.

If anything, I'd be lobbying for all finals to be played on the G, and greater access to it throughout the season and during the finals.
Personally I don't think non-vic sides should be playing in geelong or tassie against the cats, hawks and roos. As many games at the G as possible should be scheduled for non-vic sides playing a vic opponent

I agree with you about non vic sides basically only playing the MCG for victorian games as that should be more workable and at least partially help. Trouble with your other suggestion is it basically penalizes members and loyal fans of the interstate sides by making it so ridiculously expensive if their sides make finals to attend which is flat out absurd, especially if they qualify in the premium spots.

Anyone trying to fight this would be fired by the AFL immediately.

Never heard of this issue before the Tigers won the flag. The whole competition is Richmond obsessed.

Its more the 5 years in a row where the Vics have beaten the non-Vics. It reared its head when the last 2 involved the underdogs getting up.

Now we know now that the Tigers weren't a one month wonder like the bulldogs but obviously at the time a lot of people didnt have them as favourites for the GF.

It could have been any Vic team going in second favourite last year. Not specifically Richmond.

Hope that makes sense.

"Richmond still clear favourites, because of the MCG factor"

To any impartial observer that statement alone sums up how f*cked up this league is.

Yes. Interesting to see all the threads full of Richmond fans saying that this loss means nothing because they'll win at the G while also arguing that the Crows fans were just whinging and that the Grand Final at the MCG isn't an advantage.

Sorry, maybe I haven't been clear enough. This loss doesn't mean anything because its May, not September
