The puns are incoming from the commentators. Any player doing something risky 'He's been a real Daredevil there'. 'Look at that Ah Chee handball, he's got a real Iron Fist'. Some commentators will take it and run you can be sure.

Some will limp on regardless.

“Yeah that was a really Goofy series of handballs from Port there”

“Dogs don’t have hands, Lingy”

I won't mind the puns (if suitable), but those using Disney rather than Marvel specifically will look like the kids at school who don't really know what's cool, but desperately try to fake it. So Ling is the perfect example :p

Well, if Marshall walks away from afl (totally understandable) doesn't that basically agree with my point?
No, I don't think so. Choosing not to pursue a particular career, or a particular career in a particular location because it impacts on your life in a way you don't wish it to, has nothing to do with mental strength.

It is a terrible position for kids of their age to be in. There is no right decision. Every situation is different and the support they receive is different.

Let's recap, I have no issues with people walking away or choosing a path that suits their current situation and life story, etc. But to succeed at the top level of your chosen field you need a particular personality, which sometimes includes the mental strength to overcome your reality. If you'd rather play country footy than try to overcome your issues and stay at the top, fine. Who am I to judge? But it literally means that you don't have the personality to succeed at the top level against all odds. Is not that hard to understand, is it?

I would pass on Francis. I think the best thing for him, is to go back home play country footy for a year with mates, be with his family who are from the Riverland, so if they have a farm, work on the farm, or find a job in town or on a farm, get out of the bubble of professional footy and experience some normal life again. After 9-12 months away from the professional game he is going to find out if he really wants to go back to it and commit himself to being a professional footballer.

If I was Essendon I would go to the AFL and ask to do this but somehow retain the right to relist him after 12 months but dont have to pay him, or if they do its less than half of a rookies base pay. If he says he doesnt want to come back then its bad luck for Essendon. He might need another 2 or 3 years before he says he wants to give professional footy a go.
That's allowed now? I'd like to retrospectively retain the rights to Stewy Dew, please.

Its not specifically, but there are clauses in the CBA and the Player Rules which give the AFL Football Operations Manager some discretion under exceptional and compelling circumstances. This might just be too much, so the AFL would have to pass a specific new rule which they have the power to do.

But from the May 2016 Player Rules looks like there would be a chance. Cant find ones after 2016 ones.

18. Relist – Exceptional and Compelling Circumstances
18.1 Application for Relisting

(a) A Player and Club may apply to the AFL for a special ruling that the Player who has been or is to be delisted from the Club may be relisted by the Club.

(b) Such application may be made at any time up to 17 October in the year that the Player is to be relisted.

18.2 Grounds for Relisting
(a) Permission will only be granted under clause 18.1 if the Club and Player can satisfy the AFL in its absolute discretion that exceptional and compelling circumstances apply.
(b) It is a pre-condition to the granting of approval that the Player spent no more than one Season removed from the Club’s List and that the Player did not receive a Football Payment by the Club during this time.
(c) It is a further pre-condition that if the Player was on the Primary List, he must be relisted on the Primary List.

18.3 Approval Procedure
Where a Club proposes to transfer a formerly delisted Player back onto its List, the following procedure shall apply:
(a) an Officer of the Club shall as soon as practicable, and no later than 17 October in the year that the Player is to be relisted, complete an “Application to Relist a Player on a Club’s List” in the form prescribed in Schedule 1 as Form 38 (Application);
(b) the Player shall sign the Application as evidence of his consent to being listed on the Club’s List;
(c) the Officer of the Club shall lodge the Application with the AFL, together with supporting evidence giving full particulars of the exceptional and compelling circumstances which apply;
(d) the AFL may in its absolute discretion, approve or disapprove the listing of the Player on the Club’s List or require further evidence prior to determining whether to approve or disapprove the Application; and
(e) where the AFL gives its approval, the Club shall include the Player’s name on the list submitted in accordance with the AFL Rules.

Looks like Voss' son is a big chance to get drafted by Brisbane under father son. Good long story at

THE son of Brisbane champion turned Power assistant Michael Voss is impressing in Adelaide junior football and looms as a possible father-son pick for the Lions in this year’s draft. Casey Voss, who has lived in SA since Michael became Port Adelaide’s midfield manager in 2015, has been named in Sturt’s best in five of its seven SANFL under-18 games this season. Standing 183cm and 80kg, Casey started 2018 across half-back before this month becoming an inside midfielder – the role Michael made his name during his 289-match AFL career. Brisbane scouts have been tracking Casey, a member of the club’s father-son academy, for several years and are now watching him every week. The Lions can nominate Casey as a father-son selection in November’s national draft and although they are noncommittal at the moment, they are interested in the 17-year-old and following him closely.......

First year playing solely for Sturt as had school footy last year. Is studying mechanical Engineering at Adelaide Uni. Got 99.05 on his ATAR last year. Spent a week in January with the Lions. Missed out on the U/18 state squad but did say - “Even now that dad’s at Port, I try to get down to Alberton every now and then and watch bits of training.”
