I say let China invade us and then our growing deficit becomes there problem, plus I like a good yum cha.

Barnaby would be imprisoned (corruption or breaking the 1-child rule), Pauline's head would explode and the ALP would lose their powerbase as we'd all be in 1 great big union.

I personally see no down side and would welcome our Northern Overlords.

Its not really espionage when they openly buy politicians. They are just doing exactly what Australian companies and rich people have been doing for decades.
Influence buying in politics isn't the primary concern. Industrial espionage, theft of technology, theft of doctrine, military espionage etc.

As an example, three French ex-intelligence officers charged with treason last week for selling state secrets to the Chinese in the 90's/00's. The Chinese were after the operating methods of the foreign facing French intelligence organisation, DGSE, which has a very good reputation and is also notorious for industrial espionage.

You're taking the piss right.

Isis were isil @nd the dgse supplied special forces and weapons to them in Libya

Also provided air cover

Then did the same in Syria
A good reputation for their professionalism and quality of work. I wasn't attaching a moral value to the work itself.

Bigfooty would be quiet, 90% of posters on both sides of the spectrum would be in prison for saying something other than the directed speech of the day.

Another positive right there.

The only reason China is like is because western nations infiltrate and try and pull down thier system

The reason we do that is because it's the only way we can be convinced our system is better

Their system of capitalism is not overly dissimilar to Western capitalism anymore given the tariffs and protectionism written into WTO rules, RFTAs, etc.
We're in a new paradigm where the White House to crowing about protectionism and China are looking more like the champions of free trade.

It's a very weird time. China are signing non-aggression treaties with India while the US is bombing the crap out of the enemies of ISIS in Syria while maintaining a 'war or terrorism'.

People finding out the left and right wing control the same bird flying around in a circle.
I had a university educted chinese intellectual ask me my opinion of tianemen square.

I said your gov couldn't provide what the protestors we're arguing for so escalated the response until they shut up.

I said the same thing just happened with occupy wall street protestors.

China and India's policy of non aggression is very similar to the Molotov-Ribbentrop pact between the Nazis and the Soviets, perhaps with less idealogical hatred between the two. India can't keep up in an arms race and China doesn't need an enemy on its southern border if it turns it's attention to the pacific. It's a mutually beneficial agreement that isn't about promoting pacifism.

You are aware this has been a hot border for decades?

Uh, yeah? The three way split over disputed territory in the Kashmir region is a very, very different scenario than a full conflict.

That's not the only area, the main conflict in recent years has been in the east in Arunchal Pradesh. While it hasn't been outright war like in 62, both armies have been involved in hostilities

There have been low level conflicts for decades all around the Chinese borders.
In the mid 90s met quite a few Viet fighter pilots re-training as airline pilots who had confirmed Chinese kills on the border. One particular guy had three kills in his Su-22, seemed very proud of the fact.

I piss my wife off something bad about that

I told her once that Vietnamese love that they are one of the few people on earth to defeat most major powers (Japan, France, USA, China). She lost her shit saying they didn't beat China. I told her about 1979, and she said that it was a lie, China was attacked by Vietnam and it was a draw

It was a very fish called Wanda moment :p

I still love the reddit exchange about superheroes.

"Name anyone who could beat Captain America - go on, I'll wait"
"Captain Vietnam"

The proto-Vietnamese state repelled a huge Song dynasty invasion force that created the imagined border between China and Vietnam that exists today.
Again later the Vietnamese defeated a large Qing army in the 18th century. You can argue the toss about whether Vietnam being a tributary of China meant they weren't independent.

In light of Trump's behaviour at the G& we should seriously be considering whether throwing our lot in with him seemingly without question is the best thing for the country going forward. We don't even seem to be hedging our bets with China at the moment.

I was having dinner with some chinese friends last night, and they asked why Australia is the only country in the world other than israel who is going all in on Team Trump. I honestly had no answer for them

he hangs up on our leader, accuses us of exploiting them in trade, says we havent done our share supporting the alliance, and our response is to kow tow and agree to trade restrictions
