It has to be 2 years or more. But my point is just the length (and therefore the total size of the contract) doesn't matter. Just the average yearly salary. Eg. 2m over 4 years is considered less than 1.2m over 2.

We continually field the youngest 22 in the league and Boyd is coming to the lowest point in his contract. From what I know we're actually struggling to pay 95% of the cap. Nothing prudent about lowballing a player of Dahlhaus' caliber.

On one hand, it sucks to be losing a premiership player who was much loved, as well as in an important age bracket that we lack.
On the other hand, his form has been poor barring a few games for 2 years. He has obviously been a bit hampered by injury during that time, but it doesn't completely excuse his unacceptable use of the footy during that time.
Start of the year I was completely happy for him to go. Towards the end of the year, I didn't want him to. I still don't want him to. But I am 100% behind the decision to not bow to further years or money in his contract. If he wants to leave because of that, can't do much about it. There is loyalty to the player, but there is also loyalty to the club. You've seen it with the Hawks, you've seen it with the Cats, and now you've seen it with the Tigers who are about to sign ******* Tom Lynch. Premiership players accepting a little bit less to keep a group together. If he thinks he can keep a good standard of footy going for 3 years, which he obviously does, he'd earn another contract at the end of it anyway. Of course, he needs to look after himself first. So if the security of an extra year and more money trumps staying at the club, so be it.

It'll be horrible seeing him in a Cats guernsey next season and beyond, but I personally can't help but feel a little bitter at Luke himself for bailing over the size of the contract. I think the extra year rather than the money is the sticking point, because I can't see us offering him a huge amount less than 500. I'd be comfortable giving him anything from 400-450.

Exactly right. Plenty in here giving it to the club about not fronting up and paying him what he asks for. Well wait a second, we can't do that for every player who wants to be paid money. We have guns on our list and future guns that will demand big bucks. Dahl is not one of them on this list with Macrae, Bont, English, Richards, Naughton. He just isn't. So if it's an extra 500k over 4 years he's leaving for, I don't begrudge him that decision, it's a business with a very limited shelf life. But let's not act like the club has let themselves down by refusing to pay what they see as overs to retain a player. That's actually called principled list management.

Why on earth not?

The biggest anomaly of the Free Agency arrangements is that clubs get the player for nothing other than the salary they agree to pay him. The club that loses the player does however get a draft pick as compensation ... and this magically appears out of thin air! (In reality we know that it is a conjuring trick whereby all other clubs slip one place down the draft order. In effect the other 16 clubs pay the compo on behalf of the club that gets the so-called "free" agent.)

In the case of well-paid FAs the compensation can be a pick in the 20s in the ND, sometimes even in the top 5 (eg Lynch). Depending on your luck at the draft that could well be a 10-year 200-game player.

However another somewhat quirky feature of Free Agency is that if your club receives a FA in the same year that it loses a FA, you are unlikely to get any compensation at all (depends how much difference there is in their contracts and ages). On the face of it this is fair. However it provides a disincentive for clubs to go after FAs that year.

Now that Dahlhaus has walked, it seems to me that the tactical machinations around whether we go after FAs ourselves should be very much at the centre of our off-season strategy and the compensation issue (potentially losing a compo pick of around 20-28) is critical to those machinations.
It could be another Toby McLean for instance.

So why wouldn't we discuss that at length ... like we do everything else?

From what I've heard we are actively trying to get a free agent or two in and the club does value the need for filling that age range of experience, that's all.

I don't think they're going to be the pipe dream players that get discussed on here. I just wouldnt blink an eye if we sign one or two guys and end up with no dahlhaus compensation is my point.

I don't think there will be as clear of a trade-off from the ins and outs of this particular departure like last year and we shouldn't expect it to be that way.

I also don't think for a second that the club didn't try pretty hard at the death to try and get Luke to stay.

I also don't think for a second that the club didn't try pretty hard at the death to try and get Luke to stay.

Any idea who? Unless they are players who would garner their own picks around the one we get for Dahl they won't make ours disappear entirely, right?

Paying 95% next year would allow us to pay 105% the following year. You can always pray at that altar, if nothing else.

That's fair enough.

If we do chase free agents we are getting a free hit ourselves (at the expense of all the other clubs). So it's not a stupid strategy. I'm just saying that a pick of say 25 (or whatever magic number the AFL thinks of) is something that we now have in our pocket and we have to take that into account as a real cost if we recruit a FA or two.

My view is if we do decide to go after a FA this year let's make it such a biggy that losing pick 25 for him will seem like a mere trifle. A couple of low-impact journeymen as FAs doesn't sound like a good idea to me.

Which free agents do you have in mind? It's a pretty meagre list of talent. The only ones that really interest me are Gaff and Menzel. Anyone else would require someone to sell the idea to me

Foregoing the Dahlhaus compensation by signing any of the current RFAs or UFAs outside of Gaff as a free agent would be a truly bonkers move. Would have to be a trades or DFAs surely.
