For what the 2009 draft lacks in depth it more than makes up for in top end talent

The top 3 have a combined 7 All Australians, 2 AFLCA Awards, 3 AFL MVP's and 2 Brownlow medals between them. They are also arguably the 3 best players in the league. Add an extra three All Australians when you add Talia #4 & Gunston #5

1. D.Martin
2. N.Fyfe
3. M.Gawn
4. D.Talia
5. J.Gunston
6. M.Duncan
7. B.Cunnington
8. T.Scully
9. B.Stratton
10. D.Astbury
Unluckies- D.Grimes, J.Melksham, J.Carlisle, L.Jetta, Z.Tuohy & M.Barlow

That really is a very strong and well rounded top 10

Pretty good list i reckon, to be honest, that's pretty much how I'd have it exactly in the top 10

Very few rucks & KP forwards in that draft year.

My best 22 (excluding retired players)

B: Suckling, Talia, Stratton
HB: Touhy, Astbury, D Grimes
C: Scully, Fyfe, Duncan
HF: Melksham, Carlisle, Christensen
F: Gunstan, S Reid, D Menzel
R: Gawn, D Martin, Cunnington

Inter: Barlow, P Hanley, D Roberton, Lewis Jetta

Emer: Pittard, Duryea, Sheppard, J McMillan

The top 3 could really be in any order. Personally I would probably take Fyfe at number 1, if it wasn't for injuries/suspensions he would be winning a second brownlow this year and probably have 3-4 AA's. Having said that his injuries and supsensions and Gawn's long list of injuries means Martin would be the number 1 pick

My best 22 (excluding retired players) forward line a bit suspect, but still a very strong team.

Gunston doesn't get a run?

This draft looks a hell of a lot better than it did two or three years ago.
Yep, it looked as bad as the 2003 draft.

Now it looks like an extremely strong draft as far as top end talent goes. Like I said the top 3 players are as good as any top 3 players in a draft since 2001. Even more impressive is that as good and dominate that Martin, Fyfe & Gawn are only Martin was a high draft pick

Gawn the only ruck in that draft of any note. (Vardy would be R2)
No gun KP forwards either. Unless you count Sam Reid or Carlisle as a gun KP forwards.
Excellent crop of top end mids, although not a lot of depth after the best half dozen or so
Lots of very good defenders though.

No doubt Gawn is better than the guys below him on the list this year but Gawn has only had 2 really good years and hasn't even played 100 AFL games. Gunston has played 170 games and has 338 goals and has outperformed Gawn for all bar the 2 years where Gawn played a full year. For mine Gawn slots in around 7 or 8. The rest of the ranking looks pretty good.

Yeah but durability plays a big role in overall value.

Even if Fyfe is a slightly better than Martin, Martin's durability would easily make him #1.

Nah, Gawn sits comfortably in the top 3.

Injuries meant it took him a while to get going but he has been AA twice in the last 3 years and won the AFLCA award. If the draft was redone today there is no way any league club would let him slip out of the top 3

In hindsight 7 or 8 might be slightly too low. However have a look at what Gunston did in our 3 grand final wins. Over a whole career would not rate him near Gunston - 170 games to 100 is a huge difference. If he had played 150 games to date would be a completely different story of course.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion.

Gunston has done it for longer but Gawn has reached a level well in excess of Gunstons imo

i used to hate looking at this draft when you consider we gave up 16 for Williams, Carlisle and Anthony Long.
16 was access to Pittard, Menzel, Tapscott, Griffiths, maybe Fyfe but it looks like Freo watched him and a lot of clubs doubted him.

Now i think of it as Lovett for Francis and Redman :)

1st rd;
1-Martin (MFC)
2-Gawn (MFC)
3- Fyfe (RFC)
4- Gunston (Frem)
5- Talia (NMFC)
6- Tuohy (Syd)

8- Grimes (Port)
9- Cunnington (Port)
10- Carlisle (EFC)

12- Duncan (CFC)
13- Stratton (Ade)
14- Melksham (Syd)
15- Barlow (Dogs)
16- Vardy (Port)
17- Jetta (Geel)

Dees with Martin, Gawn & Astbury look strong
Port does well with Games, Cunnington and Vardy.

Tuohy at 6 ? Wow. You rate him a lot higher than me.

I'm not sure the rodent makes top 10 either.

The Dees would take Dusty and Fyfe with 1 and 2. Wouldn't really matter who the ruckman was, who would have a better 1-2 combo than Fyfe-Martin?

Picking between dusty and fyfe is a probably the hardest choice in football.

Id take fyfe but wouldnt mind if it was decided by a flip of the coin
Its a hard choose but I'd take Dusty as he is far more durable injury wise (touch wood) and dosnt get suspended (touch wood again..)
(thinking about 2017...touching wood....) :p
