True but as we know they report whatever garbage they want just to make news. The Australian football media can be sad and desperate sometimes. Like for instance when they all came out and claimed that we weren't going to apply for a priority pick when in fact we never said such thing.

There's no accountability, especially at this time of the season.

I don't trust the media at all, unless I hear or read quotes from official or reliable sources then I consider football journalists barely better than bigfooty posters.

This time of the year would have to be the worst when it comes to sensationalist nonsense.

Admittedly it doesn't sound good, you wonder what legal grounds Carlton and GCS' have if they are denied picks after clubs have already been handed PP under this system...

When outlets like channel 7 and various journalists say something in absolute terms like this, they are usually right though.

There was no 'my understanding' or 'I've heard X is likely' it was reported as fact that we'd been denied a pp.

I think we just have to back out of the McGovern deal.

One of our second rounders isn’t going to do it (would need to use both of them) and we need pick 1 and those seconds to beef up our midfield.

All is not lost yet.

We could trade our 2x seconds to Sydney for say pick 13 + 36

13 + 36 to Crows for Mcgovern and 20
20 to GWS for Setterfield
Walsh with #1
Sheil future first
Fasolo FA

2x free hits at mature players

SOS will definitely have contingencies

I'm not that concerned about not getting a PP - we don't need to stock up on 18 year olds, older bodies might be more useful to us. I hope those that were saying they didn't want us applying aren't now whinging we didn't get one.

That said, I'm intrigued by the messaging that came from Liddle after Carlton's meeting with the AFL. He was very careful to say we'd discussed special assistance more generally, not specifically the PP - do we know for sure that we actually applied for one? Liddle said that once everything has been announced, he'd be in a better position to discuss the meeting - I'll be interested in what he has to say.

If we believe the wording of the AFL piece that they are still 'working out the details' on the remainder of a package, we may get some other kind of assistance to bring in an extra young player. It might just not be a PP.

For most of us it wasn't about drafting another 18 year old, it was trading the free pick for McGovern, allowing us more flexibility to trade other picks for other targets.

Pmsl at the media and the AFL.
Blues take a position that they won't ask for a PP.
Media takes opposite approach of any Blues position and calls CFC irresponsible for not asking; you clearly need a PP, they say.
AFL, playing it safe uses 'convention' as requiring a formal request before a PP can be given.
Its a shambles, in which everyone's a chief including the Scott brothers; no Indians anywhere other than at Princes Park.
We should have just stuck to our original position; we may still have ended up with the 'out of ND assistance' being speculated now.

We no longer need numbers, we need quality. No point downgrading what we already have.

GB, yes we do, but good clubs are able to pick up quality players from beyond the first round.

If we’re unable to pick quality from rounds outside the first round, then that shows we’re basically inept.

And if we can’t pick quality after the first round then no amount of draft picks will improve us. If that’s the case, then almost prefer the AFL step in and manage the joint rather than give us assistance picks.

I trust SOS to pick up a Kelly from the State league.

We’ve has assistance over the years - Walker was a PP (which came in the year after we received penalties), as was Kruz.

The reason we are where we are is because of poor picks between 2009 to 2014. Prefer to be a club that picks smart, rather than thinking we can only get quality from high draft picks.

The only thing that makes me think this is good for us is that clubs have rallied against us because they believe we are good enough. They’re worried. If we can grab two quality mature players with pre draft picks that is better than MM anyway. **** him. The other thing could be how bad does the afl look if tomorrow Shiel selects us and we got pick 12 for McGovern. That’s huge

I don't buy it.
The gulf between us and the top 8 is huge....then there is the TOP 4.
A couple of kids or two mature AFL players would only have gradual minimal impact.
Also don't forget we will need to replace some aging players soon.
Quite a few of our kids are still very much unproven.
In all likelihood we are getting a dart or MAYBE 2 at a revolving dartboard of second chances.
The AFL can get rooted.
Thank god for Melbourne Storm.
Ducking for cover right now!

Numb and confused. Hopefully more to come in the 'details' that benefits us, don't see it though. Will be details about not able to select 18 year olds such as Lukosious with state league picks. Just don't get why we were encouraged to apply to only get rejected. Makes no sense at all. AFL truly are spineless and enept if decision was based on stronger clubs whining about it. Very, very disappointing.
Gil was interviewed on 'On the Couch' the other week....his answers to the questions were all quite bizarre, long winded and just avoiding the point. When they questioned him on equalisation, he said the AFL thought it was working beautifully..."the Bulldogs and Richmond have won the last 2 grand finals, so shows how our policy is working".
That's so much comfort for clubs languishing at the bottom...should have read the tea leaves then about the board's decision not to award a PP to ourselves and GCS...absolute p*** weak!!!
Can we do a little chip in and pay Bolts to take a dump on Gil's front lawn at the next coaches dinner party??

I have no doubt SOS will do something like this. No doubt.

Same bloke that raised Saints needing PP?

Completely disagree.

Hawks, Tigers, Dees plus others got them and it helped them to where they are.

And while Tigers, Cats can sign the likes of Tom Lynch for FREE and say "well that is the system" I don't really give a shit what other posters say.

We may as well milk "the system" too.

After all I'd rather Tom Lynch than Pick 19 or (as appears most likely) the best VFL player any day.

I.e. Reigning Premiers get best young CHF in the AFL for free - and other clubs whinge because we get the best player in the WAFL/VFL/SANFL????

FMD!!!!!!

Been some pretty handy players drafted as mature age recruits.

Jeremy McGovern, Mitch McGovern, Isaac Smith, Harry Taylor, Barlow, Jeremy Howe, Adam Saad, Ben Brown, Puopolo, Zorko.

I can see afl argument that access to two mature players is enough when you see those names...if we got two of the likes of above for free it would actually end up being a huge handout.

Can add Lambert, Ryan, Kelly, Stewart and menegola to that list...I'm sure there's more too.

Two of them for free is huge actually.

Lukosius is a state league player...

Now that you’ve mentioned it the twits at AFL house make up some obscure conditions to make Lukosius ineligible because I’ll guarantee you they didn’t consider this fact.
Rules on the run, that’s how the AFL roll

I still think we get a PP.

The AFL came out and said for carlton to apply, they cant then say no. It would be rediculous.

But then again it is the AFL, the make rules as they go

This state league players is BS! Everyone has been so caught up with Tim Kelly this year, but every year multiple state league players get picked up and i would say 80% turn out to be nothing.
