Best Games of 2018?

AmericanAFL, if you like the history check out the Port Adelaide Football Club.

Very old state league team who then joined the national competition in the 90s.

Great history of success, also against the Victorian teams at the time.

Haha indeed, if the listed club is anything to go by. Of the 4 teams in his display pic ..... interesting choice, to say the last :p .

I see Melbourne aren’t highly regarded haha.

For the record, I haven’t decided on a club to support.
As a North American , Melbourne is a good fit though ;) *
*unless you’re from a Southern, snowless State

Most of their supporters are Headless and they never stop spouting their Proper Gander
You could’ve used Sprout ing. Opportunity missed.

Welcome aboard AmericanAFL. The MFC is the oldest professional football club in the world turning 160 years old this year. We wrote the rules that formed the basis of the game that is played today. If you are a fan of history, you have chosen wisely.

We also do a great cheese platter.

 And in recent times have lowered their standards, now happy to accept working class plebs.

Thanks mate. Haven’t officially decided on a club to support.

Despite what some have said in this thread, I’ve enjoyed watching Melbourne games. If they aren’t regarded as one of the “elite” teams in AFL, that’s just fine with me. The fact that they haven’t been premiers since 1964 is territory I’m rather familiar with as a life long Philadelphia sports fan.

Cheers.

Have only seen them play one game but it was a fun one (Robbie Gray was on fire vs the Crows).

I can’t say that I completely rule out the Power, but they’re probably long shots at this point.

Cheers.

Seeing the Eagles roll the Power after the siren yet again, caused Crows posters to break the internet.

Without doubt though the GF was a beauty. A team almost torn to shreds at QT, to come back take the lead, lose the lead and then produce one of the greatest pieces of play ever in AFL history.

It started when Jeremy McGov took that defensive mark that arguably won them the game, to be fair every player that was involved in that piece of play that led to the final goal was crucial. Any hesitation or panic would have cost the Eagles a flag.
I'm not going to lie the Port v WC game, did seem like a high point for a few Crows supporters after a tough year.

As an aside, some Grand Finals to check out since the turn of the century (if you can get access):

2002 - Brisbane vs Collingwood
2005 - Sydney vs West Coast
2006 - Sydney vs West Coast
2009 - St. Kilda vs Geelong
2010 - Collingwood vs St. Kilda
2011 - Collingwood vs Geelong
2012 - Hawthorn vs Sydney
2016 - Sydney vs Western Bulldogs

Some of these games are all-time classics. Some are simply “good” games with a tight finish.

The rematch this year was an absolute belter as well.

One of, if not the best rivalry in the AFL.

I’ll have to check it out.

Would love to hear people’s thoughts on what the best rivalries are. Crows/Power matches have their own name, if I’m not mistaken? Do any others?

All of the two team states have rivalries, although the West Australian “derby” and South Australian “showdown” have a lot more meaning due to being traditional footballing states and their teams being much longer established in the competition.

Carlton/Collingwood or Geelong/Hawthorn would be the biggest Victorian rivalry. With Collingwood/Essendon/Carlton/Richmond any clash between any pairing there would be considered a traditional rivalry game based on historically being the strongest performing sides (although Hawthorn have a claim to being higher performing than all, particularly in the last 50 years).

Hawthorn/Essendon have a spiteful rivalry which extends back to a few unsavoury but entertaining scattered incidents and both being combatants in a few grand finals against each other in the 1980s

Gastro ridden?? Gold! One player in astbury was crook. More like the prelim showed how quickly rich come back to the pack when dusty is not himself. Not to mention the fact that rance was forced to defend one on one and was owned yet again. Great zone off defender, not so great at one on one contests. The best was when de goey just dismissed him and marked on the edge of the goal square in 2nd quarter. Tiges are a very solid unit who depend so much one player to elevate them to another level. They were never going back to back - only great teams go back to back, and this rich list is not a great team
Pfft
All the prelim was a lesson in is how 22 players with absolute desire are going to beat the shit out of 3 players with desire and 17 without it (Astbury and Martin were clearly hampered and I won’t categorise them - but even with them 100% we were never winning, don’t get me wrong).

If we relied on Martin as much as you make it out to be, we wouldn’t have finished top. He was nowhere near his 2017 level and yet we were a better team in 2018 than in 2017.

AmericanAFL if you have the Watch AFL app I’d click on the TV tab and see when the Collingwood Brisbane Grand Final of 2002 is on. I rate this my favourite ever game, sensational physical contest from fifteen years ago. I think it’s showing a few times today.
