I admit I don't follow the kids leading up to the draft and their highlight packages sort of all blur into one for me. However, I have complete faith in our recruiting team and we now have the right environment to develop and keep them. Therefore, I'm confident that 2-3 of this years crop will turn out to be long term strong performers for us. Can't ask for more than that really.

Really happy with our draft haul.

Ely Smith is a great inside player with clean hands and elite kicking. Physically ready to play round 1.
Thomas Berry is a great pick up (apart from the fact that his brother will be our next captain) who also has great hands and kicks well. Will be used predominantly in the forward line. If you look at his highlights he looks like a natural forward.
Joyce is the bonus - this kid will be great if he fully recovers from his injuries. We might see this kid play regularly in 18 months time. He was considered a top 15-20 prospect at the start of the year.
McFayden has the potential to be anything, and the fact that a bid came late, meant that we could get Joyce.
Answerth - we have had him on our radar to 2 years. Great to see that our club has given this kid an opportunity.

I think the clear thing to see here is that we have picked blokes that have good/clean hands; are vg under pressure; kick very well; win their own footy and have vg character. More importantly, blokes that will fit in to our culture.

As a member, I'm happily looking forward to seeing all our new recruits.

Big Footy fans can debate whether they our inside, outside or sunny side up types:
but ostensibly, scrolling down the list, my gut feel is we have got some athletic, hard at it's.
On the surface, we don't seem to have recruited any plodding, list- clogging marshmallows.

Oderint dum methane.

Will any of our dafties get a game next season?

Ely Smith round 1. In my SC team already.

I can only go off what Noble and Conole said in the media and on the Roar Deal podcast. If what they said there is incorrect, you'll have to take it up with them.

Berry is quick but inside - I'm hopefully he can develop into a decent midfield with both inside and outside ability. Joyce is also more inside.

Answerth is a late pick and Madden is an international rookie. Neither should be even slightly considered when discussing the composition of our list.
Maaaate, I reckon I've seen Tom Berry play live around the 15 games mark here in Central Victoria between Ballarat, Bendigo and Geelong over the last 2 years, let me assure you Tom is much more than an inside midfielder, he's as hard as a cat's head at the contest [inside] and has amazing burst speed [2.94 - 20m] and agility off the charts testing a 7.92 at the pre-season TAC testing to go with his excellent endurance. I'd class him as an inside/outside mid/forward on everything I've ever seen up close.

For reasons known only to the Vic Country coaching staff he was played out of position at the Championships this year playing as a lock down defender on the other teams most dangerous small forwards, the reason given was the VC coaches thought with his blend of speed, agility and endurance he was the best option they had in the squad. When fit he's been the Rebels No.1 midfielder with stints up forward where he's very dangerous with his leap and strong hands. Tom's only real slight weakness at this point is his field kicking that can be a little inconsistent at times, just needs to lift the eyes a little more before getting it on the boot, that said he has a very penetrating kick when he really goes for it. I think a little of that comes from playing in Rebels sides the last 2 years that have lacked for top end talent across the board especially Talls in the Forward line so Tom has tended to go for yardage a lot of the time.

If it wasn't for his injury riddled year and his concussion early in the year when he collided with the point post at Mars Stadium with his manic attack on the footy I seriously doubt you'd have secured him at #36. IMO he has all the attributes to be even better than Jarrod who I also saw plenty of if he remains free of injury and his development goes to plan.

To give an idea on how club rankings can differentiate, Port felt they could get Joyce with one of their last two picks.

I think he is going to be remembered as an absolute steal.

One question that keeps nagging away in the background for me is young Berry. Part of me hopes we haven’t been caught up in the nostalgia of the two brothers being together. I haven’t seen much of Tom so would appreciate if the draft watchers could drop a few thoughts strengths weaknesses etc. and whether in your view this is a good selection or a bit of a reach.

Consensus is pre wrist injury and national carnival he was touted as a top 20 pick although was played out of position during championships .He is Athletically as good as anyone ( speed , agility , endurance) . On potential not a reach at 36 however I’m sure lions would of thought better to pull trigger on berry at 36 as thought Joyce May of slid . I think an outstanding draft my us all players have potential to be a lot better then where they we’re taken . Even if 2 of the 5 are outstanding players it’s a win for us . Watched the 2nd day of draft again on fox and they were all clearly impressed with our picks especially Joyce. Looking ahead to next year you would think ( Hodge out, Bastinac out, then you all have Keyes , Lester ,Allison , Matho and Corey Lyons all fighting for survival ).

We have very good flexibility to add an outstanding talent or two again in draft and trade period with pies first pick say 14-18 Our 2nd hopefully around 30 and gcs 2nd around 19-21. A future first could also be thrown In as well.

Read back through previous pages, perhaps do your background before posting these thoughts, this young man is a faster harder version of his big bro and a great young fella everyone will warm too, he has been hampered by lots of injuries the past 2 years and was previously Vic Country under 16 captain, same year Jarrod was Under 18, now sit back and watch over the years ahead.

It is really easy to think that and whilst I’ve gone on record and said I have no idea who ranks where; but I can assure you it wasn’t a reach given Berry would’ve probably not made it to our third pick which we used on Joyce.

Why do Richmond bid on our acedemy players every year ?
Because they’re campaigners.

Prior to the draft, Brisbane were one of only three clubs not to have bid on another club’s F/S, Academy player etc.

That is up until we bid on Cameron, which we can all agree the NGA is a farce and warranted a bid.

Hard to say that it was a premature bid at #42. Was going to come sooner or later by that point.

Anyone see Leigh's comments? Have they been discussed?

"Last nights AFL Draft of 20 odd picks was a perfect exercise in time wasting , an interesting 1 hour was turned into a 3 hour snoozefest , us 100 K who watched must need to get a life !"

I didn't mind the coverage but I do agree that it dragged on a bit. If we didn't have a late 1st pick I would have turned off after Top 10.
