The ball does most of the work, most players are either standing around or slowly jogging from side to side to take up space.

The only real sprinting happens on a break, usually doesn’t last for more than 20-40 metres.

Plenty of time wasted waiting for a free kick or throw in to be taken.

The goalkeeper doesn’t run very far either.

Soccer player averages 7 miles - AFL players would run at least that, with many running closer to 10 miles per game (16km per game). Then add on the tackling which causes injuries and it goes some distance to explaining the lack of longevity relative to other sports.
AFL players also have to carry a lot of extra weight.
As you say it's not so much about fitness rather than how taxing the sport is on the body

running is running

The running is different in football to afl, much more medium speed running less sprints. Also as mentioned most players are running unimpeeded instead of being tackled.

Depending on system Full backs would probably run the most in football repeat 200’s being their bread and butter.

There's always ruckmen available to poach from another club who is stuck behind the no.1 ruck.

And we do have TDK as the drafted developing ruck.

Plus if we wait 12 months, Finbar will be about 205cm....

None of our genuine rucks can forward ... even at a minimum competency.

Hoping TDK can break the mould, otherwise we need to find us one. Harry has taken over from Casboult as the preferred forward/ruck. Cannot play another ruck/forward unless they can do both.

I reckon that’s what they have in mind going forward. Harry and TDK both playing ruck /forward

AFL is the most physically demanding sport in the world when all factored in. Players require elite aerobic and anaerobic capacity, power and speed, agility, and an ability to take a hit with no protection and from 360 degrees. Add to this the fact that they have to tackle others and be remarkably resilient in battling constant injuries to even get out on the field and you have a sport that I was never going to succeed at!

One of the most. We tend to be biased and its just plain pointless to diminish other sports that way.
