Who else have you got in mind?

I'd like to see a non military possibly

Someone with strong philanthropic ties, or community engagement.

Without serious thought, someone like Simon McKeon who has a strong business, charity, and edu background

One of the Dodson bros, but I suspect they may reject

If she was younger, Pat O'Shane

Btw not really vetting these, off the top of my head in the subway queue :p

I know it's twitter and therefore only reflective of the far sides of politics, but it's astounded me the vitriol directed towards this guy because he's an old white man.

I reckon i've seen 30 or 40 tweets to that effect and not one that mentions his character (which may be good or bad, I wouldn't know).
Sheer vacuity.

Haven't had as much time as Morrison to think of who but the last few seem to have come from military, politics or judiciary.
Surely there are prominent retired scientist, philanthropist, medical or other fields.

Would have been unifying if both sides put forth a list of names and a committee selected GG. I have a feeling it was rushed, just like most announcements lately.

Hieu Van Le was a good choice in SA, boat person from Vietnam, holds a degree in economics and accountancy and a Masters Degree in Business Administration from Adelaide University, great success story that typifies our multiculturalism.

They do it well in SA.

Couldn't go wrong with Nova Peris. Female and indigenous. She'd be great.

Where did I say female and indigenous?

I said non military and with a history of community service

Nah. That is not the role of the GG. He or she is not a player, and not even an umpire. In cricket terms they are more like the match referee. I think a lawyer, judge or military person is a good background for the role.

Mary Gaudron?

That should exclude a military person then. The current one is an embarrassment.

The GG is also the commander in chief of Defence, and technically it is the GG who makes official declarations of war. Some sort of knowledge of the protocols for that is an advantage.

Why? They will be told what to do

Not always. There is one case of a PM asking the GG to send troops overseas without the support of Cabinet, who were opposed. The GG refused unless Cabinet approved.

As I said, some knowledge of the proper protocols. Knowing when to say no.

The GG would have legal advice on that, they don't need to be a general

Still needs someone to know that they must ask for and follow the advice. I still think a legal or military background is good grounding for that.

Legal yes

Military no

Your example is a legal issue, not a military one

We are way overdoing the ratio of generals to others in recent years

Since 1975.

John Kerr - lawyer and judge
Zelman Cowen - lawyer and academic
Ninian Stephen - lawyer and judge
Bill Hayden - former police officer and politician
William Deane - lawyer and judge
Peter Hollingworth - cleric
Michael Jeffrey - Major General
Quentin Bryce - lawyer and academic
Peter Cosgrove - General
David Hurley - General and Governor of NSW

Haven't had a cleric for a while. Missed opportunity.

I know one who might have a vacancy in his calendar for a while.
