Because our politicians are idiots. More issues of consequence should be handled on election day like the Yanks do, instead of spending $120million on non-binding postal votes halfway through a government term.

Like, who is actually that attached to Australia Day really? 90% of people here would just treat it as an excuse to have a BBQ, sink piss, and maybe hit the beach. Moving it to any other day in January doesn't actually impact that, yet people get so b***hurt over a (pretty flimsy) historical date.

And that's my major point, in reality a date change has no real impact on most of the population as their primary concern is the day off. The same can't be said for Christmas or ANZAC Day though.

Honestly, I'd be all for a Melbourne Cup style flexible date, such as the 3rd Monday of January which would fall somewhere between the 15th and 21st.

Is it supposed to be particularly offensive to actively celebrate Landing Day? Because there are reminders and implicit celebration of colonisation everywhere. I suppose this would be one trigger removed, but literally the entire Australian society is a reminder.

^^This. The date means nothing to me personally, but I'm over the noise. If Indigenous people have a problem with it (and it's not hard to see why), then I see no issue in changing it to a day where that's not a problem. It's not a big deal because it's not a big ask.

Like, if the date changed, some hangers-on would sulk for a few years afterwards, but overall we'd generally move on.

Where does it end though? I saw a positive and supposedly non-controversial ad about our colonial beginnings the other day, (I don't know what they were selling), and it occurred to me it might be offensive to even portray that in a good light.
