Crows to face Power in U23 trial game at Thebarton 23/2/2019

We have been supporting our defence with extra numbers back more than any other team. We can’t do that this year.

I was wondering how long it would be after that advertiser article about us having extra numbers back would go from fiction to fact.

We had the most extra numbers back at center bounces, that's it, at no other time was this the case, and the point of those people back was to run thru and get forward, not to stay there and help out defenders.

We are the least defenders back team in the comp.

Go and watch any game of the last 3 years and watch us run a defense of even or lower numbers.

I was commenting on our defence from centre bounces! Which is exactly what that stat was about.

It was also to try force the opposition to man up on them to get even numbers in our forward line, which 6-6-6 gives us.

I have always been one for horses for courses selection based on the opposition team & now the size of the ground is also a factor.

We should be developing depth by strategically resting players during the season, so we should get smart about playing/resting depending on the opposition & ground.

We’ve been saying this since the Neil Craig days, but ‘continuity’ and going full bore for this weekends 4 points has continued to win the day. I don’t see that changing anytime soon.

I noticed we didn't use the new kickout rule much if at all, we had Seymore taking our kickouts and he took almost all of them from within the square, rather than getting an AFL listed player to get some practice with the new rule. I'd guess the club thinks they have some strategies on how to exploit the new rule and we didn't want to show our cards just yet. I would have liked to have seen Jones or Butts given the kickout duties since they are fast with good kicks.

One thing it did highlight was the issue the SANFL team might have with Strachan, Hunter and Himmelberg forward. Gonna lose a lot of pace in the forward 50 there.
Don't think that will be a big problem, Strachan got some pace, and Hunter and Himmelberg are not slow,
What you will find with the 666 rule, Strachan at 204cm and capable of taking a big mark will cause a lot of SANFL teams problems, Add Himmelberg, Hunter and it will be interesting.
Don't forget they will have the likes of Davis, Stengle, Murthy, McAdam, McHenry, Jones, Wright, MacKay, at there feet, as not all these player will be playing AFL at the same time.

It's good to see that even among the youngsters coming through, our midfield structure, pressure and defensive positioning/running is just non-existent. Played EXACTLY like our senior 22.

Not sure what Godden is now bringing to the table, but our midfield tactics still sucks ass right across the board.

Campo still heavily involved and I doubt Godden would be wanting to step on his toes.

There's fast and fast for a bigman. Hunter may be quick for his size, but he's still not quicker than a smaller player.

We had two goals from the big bigs yesterday, one from ROB taking a contested mark, one was from the Crouch clearance that led to a quick I50 and caused them to give away a free. But apart from that it's the usual bomb it in stuff which doesn't work well.

Quick for his size, Size has nothing to do with it, he quicker than most realise,
Yesterday we rotated players a lot and did not give any line the time needed to settle down, we played several players in new positions and move them around again during the game. We got smash when we played the C team in the middle even though we won the rucks.
add to that,6 new player and 7 top ups and delivery into the forward 50 was shit. Not a great day for the tall forwards but a good day for the smalls at there feet.

SANFL wise not concerned with the pace of our tall forwards this year, more concern with the delivery into the forward, And if we keep most of our player on the deck will win more than we lose. again it will be the fitness of our Top up that will determine how well we will go.

**** me this Jones kid has some serious wheels. There was a part of the game in the 3rd I think it was where the ball spilled loose to a Port defender on the D50 wing, and this crows player cam flying across the tv screen to contest. Dragged it in unfortunately and got pinged HTB, but my god was he quick, talking like CC top speed quick.

Exciting to say the least.
Nice spotting...

Highly doubt if we've developed new midfield strategies we're going to put them on full display until Round 1 and certainly not when it's the "B" team like yesterday. I wouldn't expect too many of the contending teams to go with a full on dress display of their new midfield tactics until Round 1 either.

The port midfielders seemed to be tackling before the player had the ball to push them off balance, this is an example of that, they were all doing it and it was very effective at stopping us getting the ball out of a clearance cleanly. It was like sometimes they prefered to be second to the ball and go for the player.

CC top speed? I find it hard to believe.

I find CC's top speed hard to believe when I see it.

Yeah that caught my attention. Was thinking who the hell was that? The Flash. I didn't think he had those wheels. A welcome addition as we have not really been known for pace through our midfield since Clangerfield.

Just watched quarter 2 again and was not overly happy with our disposal. Many drop punts not spinning correctly and not hitting players on the chest. Would have thought this would have improved over preseason but maybe first game nerves for some.

Just some thoughts after the replay.

Mchenry looks up to it. Was involved and pretty clean. Smart player. Can easily see him getting a game this year.

Jones was very indecisive with the ball and therefore got caught out a bit. A lot quicker than what I thought though. Mchenry looks more ready.

Stengle is extremely clever and highly skilled. He'll be a real player very quickly I think. Comforting to know as betts draws to an end.

McAdam also shows a lot. Has some good pace and very good skills. Probably a fair bit away in terms of fitness.

Knight looked a bit lost. Had no impact.

Crouch was decent in a struggling midfield. Was our best without starring. Obviously needs some more game time.

Murphy was probably second best. Had a really nice game in the midfield. Will be interesting to see where he plays this year. Not sure if he's best 22 but can definitely be handy when he does come in.

Keath is an AFL footballer. Calm with the ball and decent in the air.

O'Brien is pretty decent in the ruck but I'm not sure his skills are up to it still. Think he'll get a crack at it though.

Scholl and Hamill I didn't really notice. Not really in the game.

Doedee was good when he went near it. Pretty quiet.

Gooch was quiet but did some nice things. Such a weird footballer. Strange build and kicking action but he just seems to do the right thing. I really like him.

Fog had an average game but obviously not the best game for someone playing that role. Not a lot of clean ball coming in. I don't think he's too big and slow. He's got reasonable intensity and movement for someone of his size. He's a gun and will be in the AFL in time. Not sure why people are so reactionary.

Like all sanfl games, it's hard to stand out for some players when the other team is on top.

For port, bonner, Amon and Drew dominated. Amon looks great at sanfl level but I haven't seen him do much at the next level.

Marshall looks great. He's already shown how good he can be even at AFL level. Keath did pretty well on him still.

Duursma looks pretty good as does butters. Think they've done really well with their draft. Rozee still looks pretty slim and I think that may hold him back a bit early on.
