Chris not the BS about no cuts to the ABC and SBS again, lol. As if THAT was his mandate!!
The fact that he kept repeating them even when it was obvious they were going to win was more the point.

He didnt even need to keep repeating a promise he had zero intentions of keeping

And btw you show yourself up as a city boy there - the abc has a lot more importance to those in the bush

Didn't he say it like once to 5 viewers on SBS World News?

It's just so incredibly stupid to even be talking about it 6 years later. Really.

People complain about the 2014 Budget - riddle me this - was Abbott's mandate to be a profligate Government? Or one much more concerned with Budget repair?

How about you answer THOSE core promises which lead to Abbott's mandate in 2013?

Well i guess that depends on whether you are a swinging country voter that loves your abc that voted for the coalition doesnt it.

Clearly with your personality type you cant imagine a situation unless you experience it personally.

But for someone in the country - or the city that loves their abc that voted for him - let me tell you they would take being lied to about something like that it a little more personally.

<<<Mr Abbott set a high standard when it comes to keeping promises. In 2011 he said: "It is an absolute principle of democracy that governments should not and must not say one thing before an election and do the opposite afterwards.">>>

So was vetoing the tax office from chasing 800 million off rupert murdoch profligate - or budget repair?

Was cutting the guts out of the section of the tax department investigating multinational tax avoidance - to the tune of 4000 jobs while companies like apple and google were paying millicents in the dollar tax on money earned in australia profligate - or budget repair?

More insights from the suppository of all wisdom i see you're still a fan of it

Must be why he won a massive landslide.

In contrast to Labor lefties especially on here, still sweating each individual poll release, to confirm that the Libs really will be voted out even after 500 PMs in the last 6 years, lol.
Yes, he won in a landslide.

And then his government attempted to foist the 2014 on the country and people woke up to what an ideological deadshit of a PM he was.

(And the Libs have NEVER recovered. So there is justice in this world.)

Slam the poor and beat the rich about the head with a limp lettuce leaf? Yeah some "budget repair" budget.

I think his comments the night before covered more than just the ABC and SBS but keep on dreaming.

Why hit those hardest and not go for the big end of town?

They deserve everything coming to them and hopefully the Liberals split and a more moderate party becomes the dominant force on the right side of politics.

You do understand that trickle down economics has been a total and utter failure.

NOT FOR HIM - it hasnt

And that apparently is all that matters

The difficulty with the 2014 Budget is that it didn't even come close to repairing the budget.

So, assuming in your favour that Abbott's mandate was really budget repair (as opposed to delivering sane, stable, productive government after the whole Rudd/Gillard circus, which is not the same thing), he didn't fulfil that mandate.

BTW, and this is also addressed to SBD Gonzalez, psephologist Malcolm Mackerras argues that none of Abbott, Rudd or even Howard (to my surprise) actually won in a landslide.

Ah OK. I see. For the 4 years before, as Opposition leader, you really got the sense Abbott was the ABC's best friend. Then, you were massively betrayed after the election in 2013 when you realised he wasn't.

Have I got that right? Why do I feel this doesn't pass the pub test? lol.

You can pursue that line all you want but the more imporant point is, in a situation where he knew his words could easily be held up as a measure of his relative trustworthiness, Abbott lied.

As subsequent events unfolded, even the minority who don't support the ABC were quickly able to recognise it as an emblematic lie.

The collapse in the public's trust in Tony Abbott was entirely his own doing.

His 2013 win didn't campaign on gutting government services including healthcare. He didn't have a mandate, it was unpopular, hence senators opposed it with impunity.

How did they recognise it, when they didn't even see it in the first place, and actually voted on issues like the carbon tax and boat arrivals?

How do you know what they voted on?

Erm because the polls leading up to 2013 consistently showed a massive collapse in the Labor primary vote and a massive Liberal landslide on the cards? And that didn't change the night before because of Abbott's SBS interview? lol. Seriously some people are so clouded within their own little bubble and have such bad recollections of history.

For mine, Australia rarely votes FOR a party, more likely AGAINST a party. That is what will be happening this year.

Little did some people know how bad Abbott would be although a number on here did and those that believed, no longer post in the Abbott thread.:D

No, it was not well-publicized at the time, but anyway that's not what I'm saying.

My point is it became notorious during Abbott's diabolical term in office and started to become one key factor in people waking up to what a turkey turd they'd voted for.

Bullshitting about what is far and away the most trusted institution in Australia? I mean, how dumb is that? It led people to realise he wasn't just an arseh*le, he was stupid too boot.

What you're saying is yes people didn't hear the ABC promise at the time, but they slowly realised later what he had promised and broken.

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2014-07-27/no-cuts-to-abc-promise-check/5389220
Malcolm Turnbull announces that the ABC will receive $5.2 billion over 5 years rather than $5.5 billion, a saving of $254 million, or 4.6 per cent.

So you're telling me people that were KEEN to have asylum seekers on boats stopped, that were ENTHUSIASTIC about the tax on carbon emissions being cut, were just horrified at the ABC receiving a minuscule 4.6% less over 5 future years?

Seriously?

Massive lol.

A 4.6% cut over the next 5 years is quite a lot though and lead to a large number of redundancies within the ABC and their regional service cut back significantly. I think the point that others have been making is that this wasn't a necessary promise for Abbott to make and that it is emblematic of his tumultuous time as PM.

Equating a small cut to ABC funding with Gillards barstardry is laughable. Likewise people are in for a rude shock when the true cost of Bills electricity policy start crushing the hip pocket.
