Tomlinson will resign soon and I wouldn’t give up nearly that much for Patton. I want him but not at that currency and especially coming off his third knee reco. GWS would just be glad to clear salary to offer early extensions to their young up and comers. I’m thinking a Scully type deal.

You may very well be right, either way I'm eagerly waiting.

I think he's grossly underrated by many and is quite capable in multiple positions.

We're definitely having a red hot crack at Coniglio and if he doesn't re-sign by midseason then he's out of there.

As for Patton, I'd be more than happy to cough up a first from him provided that the club is confident that they can get his body right and also that we've landed Coniglio as a FA first.

If it means we get a young and capable KPF to replace Roughie, without losing any of our own promising players in the trade then it's a no brainer.

If recent events have shown anything, it's that if Clarko wants something, he gets it and draft pick are almost irrelevant.

Imagine if we raided GWS as follows:

Adam Tomlinson - FA
Stephen Coniglio - FA
Jonathan Patton - TRADE in exchange for Hawthorn 2019 First Round Selection

It'd pretty much cripple the plastics and catapult us straight back into major contention territory.
Patton won't cost anywhere near a first round pick, is a good value target for us though.

It wouldn't cripple them at all - they haven't played with Patton for most of the time that he's been there. Tomlinson is a decent player that lacks a true position on the field.

Obviously Coniglio is an elite player, but as much as I love him I still think that Kelly is even better. They have enough depth, and enough talent for someone else to step up. Right now Hopper is their 5th choice midfielder and is seemingly ready for a more predominant role. They'll also receive a top pick for compensation.

Difference of opinion and that's all fine and well.

I will leave you with this though, after losing both Scully and Shiel their strength has already been considerably depleted.

Losing all of the players I mentioned would almost certainly cripple them, or at the very least close their premiership window at this point in time.

Yes they'll be compensated one way or another, however they would still need to draft the right players with those picks and then develop them.

I guess that only time will tell in that regard.

The same person that told me Burto was on the block late last season and that Tom Lynch was not coming is also telling me we are not getting Cogs.

He is still saying once the Kelly deal gets sorted the word is he will stay a Giant.

Let’s wait and see again.
Your mate is a bearer of bad news. Does he have any news of who the hawks are after?

I see where your going with this.

Cogs nominates us and just so they don’t match we trade our 2020 1st for Patton and maybe something else to sweeten the deal. This takes out the AFL from doing anything about it... makes sense 👍🏽

Edit: I forgot to mention that GWS get a compo pick for losing Cogs on top of our 2020 1st.

That's right. They'll get 2 x first picks. Which is what he's worth on the open market. And a truck load of cap relief.

Patton won’t cost us a 1st- will be similar price to Scully if we trade for him given his salary.
I’m pretty sure we have to use our 1st round pick this year as per rules after trading the last two

We drafted Burton in 2015 so doesn’t that allow us to trade our 2021 1st?

Future pick

We actually used a pair of 1st Round Selections that year.

I think that the using of a 1st Round Selection every four years starts this year.

From what I've gathered though it doesn't necessarily mean we need to use it this year, doesn't it in effect give us until 2022 to actually use it?

I'm sure someone here would be able to clarify exactly what the stipulations are in relation to this.

I don’t want Patton. There, I said it.

I think it'd be more about ensuring that we obtain Coniglio than it is about landing Patton.

It would essentially mean that GWS get market value for Coniglio (pair of 1st Round Selections) as well as clearing the deadweight of Patton's salary off their books.

It would also mean that we land that elite midfielder that we're so desperately needing as well as landing a KPF for our medical team to attempt to get fit and firing.

Both of the above mentioned would only cost us a 1st Round Selection and if giving that pick up means we get Coniglio, then surely it's a no brainer.

It’s possible that GWS are planning on matching Coniglio rather than letting him walk, so we pay up (likely a first and a future first) but get Cogs + Patton in the deal. I’m tentative about Patton but he does fill a pressing need

One of the 1st Round Selections would be an AFL provided compensation pick for losing Coniglio as a FA.

The other would be coming from us in exchange for Patton.

It would mean that GWS not only get the desired pair of 1st Round Selections for Coniglio, but they also get Patton's large salary off their books.

Sounds like a definite win-win to me!

Cool so are you gonna play full forward for us when Roughie retires?
I don’t think Patton is going to play full forward for hawthorn when roughy retires. He had already been dropped by gws before his 3rd acl. Can’t see him being better whe he returns. Gws could only play him as a second ruck who also played forward. How do you see Patton improving enough to be a full tome full forward given his injury history and exposed form?

I’m sure there is a better target for that pick than Patton.

There very well might be, however as previously stated it's not so much about landing Patton.

If something like this was to occur it'd only be to ensure that we obtain Coniglio should GWS indicate they might match.

I totally agree though, if we land Coniglio as a FA without any interference then that pick could and should be better used elsewhere.

If we can get the knees right (very possible given our history of managing injuries) and his confidence up - Patton is a 25 year old 198cm genuine key forward going for cheap. These type players aren’t easy to find..

He knows how to take a pack mark, great on the lead and at his best is unstoppable.. watch the hawks GWS game from a year or two ago- was down in Tassie and ended in a draw.. Patton kicked 5 and basically took the game from us - he looked a threat every time they went forward. I think we can get him to re capture that form..

Yes, he was dropped later on at GWS as they had surplus options with Himmelberg and Cameron playing well but I think he would be a great target especially if we get a low risk deal similar to the Scully situation.. we need to find a genuine key forward with Roughie looking on the way out and I think this is as a good an option as any atm..

Plenty of players get dropped, it doesn't mean they are done as players. He has kicked 38 and 45 goals the 2 previous seasons whilst also being a decent 2nd option ruck. He wouldn't be coming in to be a superstar but he could absolutely be a role player type that absolutely makes us a better team.
