Didn't even go close to getting a chance to do that though. How can you not see this?

44 inside 50s, side got spanked and put up 58 on the scoreboard. It's incredibly difficult to be successful as a developing tall forward when you're getting that kind of delivery.

If you're asking for a developing tall forward to dominate at SANFL level before he comes into the side, we'll literally never develop a tall forward again unless the SANFL suddenly becomes an open, attacking league.

The SANFL definitely caters to a certain type of forward. Eddy was a classic example Tarzan at South Adelaide, Jane at Port. Damon White, similar story. I honestly can't quite put my finger on why, but some players just look the goods at the higher level.

Marshall was pretty poor last week against Carlton, but he was on fire against Melbourne until he was concussed. It's almost like Hinkley was looking for an excuse to bring in Sam Gray and took it.

Butcher wasn’t half the footballer Marshall is. He was dropped because he played the worst game I’ve ever seen from a Port Adelaide player against North Melbourne.

Marshall is in poor form, but he will
be back better than ever.

He was poor, both in output and apparent attitude you cant not see that. No one was expecting him to kick 10+ goals and look like Peak Dunstall or Ablett at FF.

If he kicked that first goal, not dropped almost everything he got his hands to and shows a desire to get his spot in the AFL side he could have finished with 2 or 3 goals and 18+ disposals and 6-8 Marks. That would see him back in this week, promoting him to the AFL side on his effort sends all the wrong messages both to him and his team mates.

Yep, so here we are in a situation where we either have to pick someone who didn't set the world on fire, play a woefully out of form Howard in a different position, or go into another football game with our hands tied behind our backs tactically.

Great.

Butcher and Marshall have totally different skillsets and totally different problems. Butcher was a classic pack busting KPF that drew defenders in like McStay and McInerney were doing for Brisbane tonight and created space, but obviously couldn't kick. Marshall is supremely talented and incredibly well rounded but is more laconic and is having trouble imposing himself on the game at this point.

9 rounds after being dropped at the same point in 2014, Butcher was leading the Ken Farmer and people were making every excuse under the sun not to pick him on this board. The goalposts kept shifting.

If you want Marshall to have a 2-3 goal, 18 disposal and 6-8 mark game before he gets picked, he'll never play for us again. That just totally ignores the style of football that is played in the SANFL.

Dougal is not the sharpest tool in the shed, but I fear we have to stick with him.
Its now clearly evident that we lack an alternative key central defender. We knew it and selected Grundy, who is miles off.
Its either Marshall or Billy back as the central attacker. Just pick one. I want to try Billy again. Sorry Sam Gray.
Trengove, despite being accused of having a lot of nothing possessions, is knocking the door down in the SANFL. He can take Ebert's spot. Reward form.
Ollie stays now we have spit roasted him in Brisbane.

That’s the thing, with the amount of footy he got his hands to and dropped and time he looked like he’d rather not be out there. He absolutely could have done that today, if he did he’d be straight back in next week.

I disagree and i'd love to know the last time a 20yo KPF hit the sort of stat line you're asking for on 44 I50s at SANFL level.

But ultimately, what's the solution here? You've put a line through Marshall for the foreseeable future, so what do we do? Do we continue to blow another year with a clear and obvious tactical mistake week in week out?

We just tell him what we need from him, tell him to go out and do that and he’ll get his spot back in the AFL side and if he keeps doing that he’ll keep his spot.

Yep and that's great, but what do we do in the interim? The only silver lining about this loss is that hopefully that tactical change will come under some scrutiny and we might see another tall introduced.

Pick Lienert and swing Howard forward?

Marshall won't have a 2-3 goal, 18 disposal and 6-8 mark game at SANFL level this year. It's not a realistic expectation. He's a really good chance of having one or two at AFL level if he's backed in.

You've caught us at a great time. On top of Rance, Riewoldt and others it's been reported Cotchin may miss a couple with a hammy while Short injured his elbow and Dusty may be suspended.
Don’t worry we have plenty of stars out too

Yeah people that expect that obviously don’t watch the sanfl

If you looked at the top ten goalkickers from the past ten years of snaffle you would find 90 of them would be short people.

You could count the tall forwards that have kicked multiple goals In the snaffle on one hand each year

McBean did it yesterday on one of the worst defenders ever to suit up. You’ll be lucky to see 4 more performances like that this year.

McBean also kicked 9 with 3 marks, all contested.

That should tell you all you need to know about the style of footy being played at SANFL level.

Sam Gray player a cracking game of SANFL and deserved to be in the frame for selection.

Howard was out of form and did not deserve to be selected.

The side mostly should get another run to prove themselves. That being said Sammy Gray and Howard should both make way.

I felt our pace was off through the centre, we need more direction down back and we need a forward 50 target.

Pace: Atley is probably our quickest mid and he was ok and not deserving of a spot yet. Trengove isn’t quick. We are really waiting on Amon and Atley here.

Forward target: Dixon may be done for the year. I don’t hold out hope for Frampton and Ladhams doesn’t really play that role. It’s Marshall or McKenzie and you can’t pick Marshall after that performance. (I wouldn’t have dropped him in the first place!). Howard could roll forward but I don’t think he has trained or played as a forward for a long time.

Backline leadership: Hartlett and Broadbent are your men, but both need another run or three in the SANFL first. Lienert and/or McKenzie could come in for Howard.

Changes:
Out: Howard, Gray
In: Lienert, Farrell

What I think may happen:
Out: Drew, Bonner
In: Mayes, McKenzie

Not sure if the TV coverage showed it- but Rocky left the three quarter huddle dry reaching in his mouth like 15 times as he ran off

Howard doesn't deserve to play AFL again til he tears it up in the magoos. There's not a key defender going around the size of Hipwood, and Hipwood owned him.

I’d much prefer this league if it was 16 on field, 6 on the bench, no cap on rotations, no zones, no bullshit kick ins, and no ruck nominations.

Out: Rockliff (head), Spray, Howard

In: Frampton, Polgard, Farrell
