What is the justification of shut down of social media in Sri Lanka due to this?

Appears to be because of posts from Indian news outlets that are fake. Even naming suspects from a fake document according to Sri Lankan government.
Yet to see if this is actually fake though. The Sri Lanka government appears to be concerned about these posts stirring ethnic division and vigilante reprisals. Turning off social media might be just to dampen down tensions, however limiting the shut down to certain platforms like whatsapp etc might indicate they had credible evidence that certain platforms might've been used to coordinate the attacks.
In the absence of official confirmation, we'll just have to wait till morning when I'd expect that those arrested will go to Court and thus the names will become public knowledge.

The Western media in general doesn't give a **** about attacks in developing countries especially in a country which has a massive history of civil violence. I think all religion is a crock but the different reactions by some on the left of politics compared to the NZ attack is pretty informative. This is a systematic targeting of a group of people at their place of worship with some of the bombs on a special religious day.

There's a few notable exceptions as far as our media has been concerned. It's not all that long ago that an engineer from Perth was murdered in Colombo because he resisted the diversion of his temple's funds going to the LTTE, an attack which did not "go under the radar" in our media.

Having said that, if you only read print media, one could argue that attacks in Kenya, Somalia, Balochstan, etc etc do not garner the same amount of print space nor make it to the front page as often, however to look at the twitter feeds of all international news organisations and journalists, one would get quite the opposite impression. Every terror attack, whether it's the 82 terror attacks across Africa in the last two weeks or yesterday's attacks in Sri Lanka do garner their attention. Maybe it's the medium of the newsroom, paper or airtime, that determine which stories go to print or goto air? However, I tend to be cynical and assume that it comes down to what sells advertising space, so instead of being informants of what is happening, the media tend to pick the stories that would sell their advertising space, based upon how salacious or local the stories are to their target audience. Personally, I post local stuff in bigfooty and international stuff in websleuths, only because bigfooty is hosted in Australia and Websleuths is hosted overseas, so it seems more appropriate.

It’s hardly a surprise that the general public is most concerned with what happens in places like that they live in, or have been to.

How many people do we know from NZ, or who have been to NZ? How close is NZ to Australia? How similar is NZ to Australian society?

Given every terrible thing that happens in this world, we only have a limited ability to care or process information.

Sri Lanka treads the line between a familiar country like NZ or the U.K. and a country we don’t understand like Kenya or Syria.
