NFL 2019 NFL Draft - Discussion

I like what Mayock said recently.
Coaches reach for needs. GMs like to stick to BPA. Thus the eternal struggle between the two.
I subscribe to the BPA policy.
BPA. That's how you build depth, which is how you build a Super Bowl contender. In the modern day fantasy NFL world, fans think you win SB's with star wide receivers.

FA is for filling needs. I've thought that FA should be after the draft so that teams can get the draft out of the way and have plenty of time to prepare for the next season. It will also give the poor teams a bigger advantage in draft preparation compared to the previous seasons contenders

EVERYONE assumed this was referring to the Giants.
But it was very clear to me it's the Raiders. Because Jones is a prototypical WCO and Gruden (Jon and Jay) love that kind of QB. Cerebral, not strong arm, but very mechanical, workmanlike, hitting the short stuff.

Why not trade a 2nd rounder for Rosen?
1. Teams might not like Rosen that much after scouting him even more
2. They know for sure Cardinals are drafting Murray #1 so are being really bitchy offering basement value for a QB they know the Cardinals dont want.

Rosen is a gun tho, and a surer bet than any QB in this draft
Teams last year let him fall to 10 and could've fallen further. They mustn't have liked him much. Bills even traded up for Allen. Rosen was supposedly a top 3, but GMs and HCs evaluated him as early teens.

Have heard a bunch of teams (Chargers, Patriots, Giants, Dolphins, for instance) have put in extra work scouting Rosen this off-season, and are offering no more than a 3rd. WOW.

Bad for them I guess? Belichick with Rosen would just prolong the Pats dynasty for another 15 years

Apparently they too only offered a 3rd.
The Patriots like Grier, and could take him #32.

I've watched plenty of tape of Jones, and I immediately recognized WCO written all over him. And pretty reminiscent of Gannon as a young QB. Very cerebral, high percentage short throws, eke yards, move chains type, very accurate, pretty good reader.

And then I watched a bunch of analysts discussing Jones, and they all said the same (WCO written all over him).

Drew Lock is by far more of a gunslinger, vertical thrower/intent. I think he'd suit the Giants better.

Pro Comparison: Rich Gannon
It took Gannon a long time to get his shot in the NFL because, like Jones, he came out of a school that wasn’t known for being a football power in Delaware. However, it soon became clear he could play top level football. His mix of strong, accurate passing, intelligence and mobility propelled him to becoming a four-time Pro Bowler and league MVP in 2002. The scary part is Jones can do many of the same things and is two inches taller and 5-10 lbs heavier.

Projection: 1st round
Quarterbacks like Jones are hard to find these days. Ones who are already developed and polished to play at the NFL level. One can credit Duke head coach David Cutcliffe for this. The same man who turned Peyton Manning and Eli Manning into top pro prospects years ago. That background along with his obvious array of physical talents will make Jones a top target in what has become a rather underwhelming quarterback class.

Recently Oliver, Haskins both started getting mentions of being candidates for 4 and Darrell Henderson and Darnell Savage got mentions as surprise late first rounders, where the Raiders pick twice. Probably oneof those 4

So I'm smarter than 85% of QB's... feelsgoodman.jpg

For all the talk about Pick #1 ... I think the draft gets interesting at Pick #4.

I've got a feeling that Gruden wants Haskins, but doesn't want to leak it (which is why he sent his scouting team home) so that nobody trades up for him.

I know Gruden doesn't love young QB's but maybe during all of his draft prep “QB school” exercises while he was brodacasting, he might have changed his tune on young QBs (especially looking across his division).

FWIW I hope he takes Devin White so Tampa is forced to take Ed Oliver.

1. Murray
2. Bosa
3. Allen
4. Haskins/Oliver/White/Quinnen

Cardinals are in a facinating scenario IMO. I think they still genuinely do not know who to go with at Pick #1.

They aren’t getting what they were hoping for in any Rosen deal. I think they are pushing for NY’s #17 or Washington’s #15, but it isn’t being offered, so they’re posturing to basically say, “we’ll just keep Rosen then… You guys take your chances getting your QB.”

However, these teams are waiting them out until they take Murray, and then they’re really stuffed.

I'd hazard a guess and say that Rosen is eventually traded for a 2nd or 3rd sometime between now and the draft.

niners once again benefit from everyone elses idiocy

Hopefully it spills on to Pick #5 and the Bucs.

Arians said there are 5-6 players he loves at the top of the draft and he event went so far as to label them "once in a generation type players".

It sounds to me like the Bucs are not moving down unless it’s a monster offer on the table.

That wouldn’t work. With FA you’re competing with other teams to sign a player. Team has no idea with they’ll be successful. So if you’re after a pass rusher how do you plan?

FFS Cardinals either pick Bosa or trade down you knobs.

I still think Quinnen is the best player in the draft and the best defensive player in a few years.

Praying he falls to the Bucs at #5, I think pairing him with Vea would be an absolute nightmare for OLs.

Not only would they make plays in the backfield constantly, they’d also help all those LB’s around them. Plus, all the holding penalties they’d force would put the offenses in long situations more often than not.

I like Oliver too and think he’d maybe provide the same qualities, but if they have reservations about his personality then it would make sense to somehow trade up to Pick #3 for Williams. Bucs won’t think twice about it in a couple of years when they have the top defensive player in the league.

The worst case scenario is if Williams and Oliver go before Pick #5. Allen is a nice player, but will leave a big hole at 3T. .
