Carlton only have one marquee match... and people are whinging for it to be taken off them because they are so terrible and the opponents smash them every single time.
Change opponents
No matter how terrible the blues are, they will lift for essendon
And I'd like to get the embarrassment out of the way in rd1

Essendon fc are number one in marketing and promoting their club. They even approached Carlton fc about playing an annual Good Friday eve game last year lol.

It doesn't really matter whether a game is labelled as marquee or not anyway. Essendon just have really good drawing power. Its the reason why last weeks Good Friday game was the highest crowd North Melbourne have had at Marvel since 2007.

Even if there was no ANZAC day Essendon vs Collingwood this week would attract over 80k given where both teams are at.

Then why put them in the marque spot all the time if they know they are going to draw a crowd anyway?

No Collingwood and Essendon have about the same the AFL really should spread it around more

Current marquee games:

Season Opener: Richmond/Carlton
Good Friday: Essendon/North Melb
Easter Monday: Geelong/Hawthorn
ANZAC Eve: Richmond/Melbourne
ANZAC Day: Essendon/Collingwood
Dreamtime: Richmond/Essendon
Queen's Birthday: Melbourne/Collingwood

Not counting Country Game until I see any real evidence of the AFL specially promoting it. Until then it's just a gimmick, so good luck to any team who can make one of those work.

So in total:

3- Richmond, Essendon
2 - Melbourne, Collingwood
1 - Carlton, North, Geelong, Hawthorn

Collingwood isn't the problem here.

Would have liked to see the Bulldogs and North keep Good Friday to see if they could build it into something. Then you'd just need to switch out Richmond for St Kilda on ANZAC Eve and every Vic team would have either 1 or 2 marquee games.

Ess v Carl at the G on the Thurs night was Essendon’s preference over Good Friday and I would think probably still is. We have Collingwood on Anzac Day and Richmond at Dreamtime, would be good to have a regular fixture against Carlton too.

Will have to see whether we get the chance, think the timeslot is in demand.

You’re counting Dreamtime which isn’t a “marquee” timeslot at all. It’s a simple Saturday night fixture that the clubs have built into a theme.

The bigger question is why Essendon don't have more marquee games? I'd support us having automatic entry into the grand final every year.

I agree with you but they are only marquee games in Victoria, to the rest of Australia they are just another game and are only viewed because the AFL fixture them stand alone. Play the game of the round head to head with them and see what the national audience tunes in to.
Don’t get me wrong as the AFL are smart with this, but it’s pretty hard to see much of a future for a sport when only 3-4 clubs are promoted.
It’s a Victorian footy festival these rounds, nothing more, nothing less.
The rest of the country are sitting around doing other shit and if watching they have their hand on the remote to change channels.

No, I think the AFL have turned it into a thing and built a whole promotion around it. It’s been given basically the same date and timeslot each year and had a whole round devoted to the theme with that game as the centrepiece. It gets given as much build up as any game outside of ANZAC Day. Ticks all the boxes as a marquee game for me.

I realise that this is a Victorian thing but it’s driven by the unique circumstances of AFL in Melbourne. The reason these games work as a concept is that fans of Melbourne clubs have more scope to pick and choose which games to attend, as well as the fact that even when two Melbourne teams are playing there are still on average 80% of footy fans available to attend as neutrals given sufficient incentive, and we have stadiums with the capacity to hold higher than average crowds.

Ticks all the boxes?

All these “marquee games” are standalone games at the same time every year. Dreamtime isnt.

For 15 years you get the same opponent at the same time designed as the centrepiece of a themed round that is specially promoted by the AFL to a massive extent and it’s not a marquee match?

Do you think that ANZAC Day will be a stand-alone game next year?
