Want Noah Anderson !! More elite youth , the better! Wouldn’t be trading away our first this year, no way. We’ve picked up enough talent over the last few years in trades that should see us compete at the top end, now it’s time to strike at the draft with Anderson and hopefully McGuinness. If a chance then a Cogs type through FA.

How do we get pick 1 or 2?

If things managed to fall our way this offseason there is no reason why we couldn’t win a flag in 2020!

Bring in Cogs / Day as free agents
Trade in Patton for a late pick
F/S McGinnis
Some how manage to bring in Noah Anderson

(Obviously affording the above with the assumption of Retirements in Roughead / Burgoyne / Birchall / other delistings)

Adding Cogs / Tom Mitchell to this years midfield
Sam Day to Defence
Patton up Forward along side Gunston Wingard And Bruest

Anderson / McGinnis as young developing youth

Am I asking for too much 🤔

Would be the end of me.

What has suffered with our strategy is a loss of depth. This wasn’t so much a problem when we had the likes of Mitchell, Hodge, Lewis etc. but our depth is a bit thin at the moment.
I reckon our depth is going ok.

Our problem is that we're having to play them all at once.

Any of Morrison, Cousins, Cegs, Lewis, Howe, Miles, Mirra & Brand (& lesser, Glass & Nash) have shown that they can come in & contribute. The problem for us is that we've had Mitchell, Shiels, Burgoyne, Stratton, Frawley, JO'M, Scully & Wingard miss at similar/same times & so the 'depth' guys haven't just filled the odd gaps, they've been a significant part of the team.

We have to use our first round pick in the draft at least every 4 years. If we are going to have an off year, may as well bring in some quality youth to build sustained success.
Sorry but are depth is still good, you take 6 top 15 out of any team and they will struggle.

Finn Maguiness while not possessing Noah’s next level ability to personally influence a game, from reports out of quality junior sources, “is on a steep rise of continuos improvement”. “Is developing or gives every indication he will develop a body, that will have top line AFL impact”.

Do we want him to be good, but not first rounder good, so that we don't have to spend it?

Don't think he's expected to go in the top 20 at this stage, so I wouldn't be stressing to much. What we wanted was Dean Anderson to play 17 more games for Hawthorn and to be getting Noah with this years 1st rounder.

As for this thread it's Coniglio or bust, we need to have a massive FA hit come our way if we want our strategy to be successful.

Tanking after round 6?

FFS!

I don’t think anyone is implying that we tank. The reality is if we do however lose this week (I’ll be p*ssed if we do) but if it does happen and then we then string a couple of more losses together then I totally wouldn’t be against Clarko flipping the magnets and also blooding guys like CJ, Jones, Ross etc. There will come a certain point in the season whether we’re on the cusp of the 8 or battling to keep out of the bottom half of the 8. The system (draft) rewards the teams that finish lower on the ladder and atm there’s probably 2 game changers to be had in the draft Anderson / Rowell.

IMO I don’t call playing your kids tanking and on top of the death card we got with Tom breaking his leg after Xmas it might become an option (playing the youth). However I fully expect the team to make finals but anything can happen and a loss can see you slide 5-6 places on the ladder atm.

Well lets say we finish 11th this year and have pick 6

Might be quite enticing to trade pick 6 plus 2020 1st Rounder to a club for pick 2

The Dees did pick 2 = Tyson + pick 9 or something like that

I don’t think anyone is suggesting we tank but the reality of the situation is that we have a few injuries at the moment, our list isn’t as strong as we might like, and the form of some of our senior players is a bit of a concern.
We will need to use a first rounder in the next 2 years, so may as well use it on a quality young prospect that can bring some youthful enthusiasm to the side and hopefully become a mainstay alongside Worpel for the next 10+ years.
Whether we use our first rounder this year or next might depend on where we finish on the ladder and if we can get our hands on an A grade FA.
It’s also likely that we will lose the likes of Burgoyne Birch and Rough at the end of the year so we have to keep growing our younger next generation. So if this season becomes a write off with form and injuries, then we may as well use the year to develop some younger players and build a stronger list for next year and beyond.

Our recruiting department has been, and continues to be, awesome.
Free agents (restricted or otherwise) Day and Cogs would makes the Hawks contenders. Getting (FA) Tomlinson would make us top 4. And we get to keep our 2019 1st round pick.
Another poppy or Stratton type pick at later rounds would likely result in a GF.

I’d give Nash a 6 month spell to get his kicking skills up to standard: run and bounce the ball... a good ball drop is needed to bounce the ball.. and to kick well.
Then get in Munn and Ried in for 6 months.

Currently we are a bottom 12 team with developing players.
I go to games not expecting a win, .... just hoping for new players to show something.

Topiary - why now are we potentially looking for quality youth in the draft? To me it would have made more sense in the last few years (instead of trading so aggressively for JOM and wingard) and then now look to top up our gaps with trades and FAs around a core of 20-23 year olds. Any youth drafted now will barely be ready in 21/22 (and by 22/23 most of our senior core will be gone) Strategy was always flawed and only now the club appears aware of it.
Because Clarko promised Rough and Silk a couple of years ago that he would do everything possible to win them another flag.

Recruit a KPD and let's get this guy back to CHF!
Just watch what he did as a skinny 20 year old.

I don't believe he is the listed 186cm hes more like Gunston at 193 - which is whats listed for Jack Reiwoldt probably the most effective forward in the game today. And very similar to Sicily

That made me cry more than the Cebby video.

Need his match winning ability up there more than ever. Not sure who replaces him down back though?

One strategy that I hear is in play, is perhaps trade up (if necessary) two first round picks (2019&2020) to get as high as possible in this draft, take two players or one like a Noah and perhaps a high second after we spend our second on Finn Maguiness. Try and grab Cogs as FA, and perhaps a Thompson as a FA. Somehow trade for a Patton.

This is only one of a couple of speculative strategies around Cogs. He is the main play. Of course, if he stays, we have to consider other options with one of our first rounders or if, as has been suggested we are forced into trading for him.

But I do hear clearly, the debate is a balance to trying to get some quality youth with topping up for a 2021/22 crack.

Key position acquisitions are equally vital, but it is highly, highly unusual to get dividend immediately from drafted KP’s. They take time, where as, you can usually get an earlier return from young drafted mids. Noah is going to be a very, very good player. Hence, my view, we are likely to continue to trade or FA KP’s.

When a List needs so much work, there is lots of competing strategy and priority.

But you also must remember, quality List builds take at least three draft/trade periods. For some campaigns much much longer.

It is all very, very fluid as you would expect.
Thompson who mate?
