If he stopped using his elite endurance and ability to read the play to get to 40+ contests a game as the extra player, he wouldn’t be in a position to make so many mistakes.
What an extraordinarily selective take.

He actually can't play anywhere else on the ground and is shithouse in the position he plays. The occasional solid defensive game is interspersed with 120 minutes of clanger-riddled brain fades.

Looking at his overall body of work it is unfathomable that he could have been selected at #3.

I think the AFL would have no choice but seriously consider a PP or an assistance plan of real consequence.
They can’t allow the club to have another abysmal campaign in 2020.
As it is 2019 is looking terribile we may need outright clear wooden spooners for consecutive years.
Why ? I think the AFL is quite content having Carlton at the bottom of the ladder .

I love the CFC as much as the next person and have handed over alot of money to support the club for over 30 years. But like you,if the club bought in Hird to coach i'd be having a real hard think about what i'd be doing with my money in the future aswell.
I dispise Essendon and anything to do with that club and always have.
I really hope we dont go down that track.
Club wouldn't be that stupid for a start it would take 10 k immediately off membership total .

As a team we are sixth in the league, so yes that's right.

However if you look at the team breakdown:

Cripps- 88
Fisher- 40
Walsh- 39
SPS and Dow- 34

Huge drop off there. Another clearance specialist would not go astray.

Cripps enormously overshadows how bad we truly are and what our weaknesses are. He's the extremely good big strong mature midfielder in a team which lacks all of these things.

Fisher should be playing on the outside, forward and wing not on ball. SPS should be playing on the outside in much the same way, forward, wing and back flank, not on ball. Dow should be playing reserves not as our second string centerman. Walsh should be playing wing, not on the ball. Murphy should be playing in the forward pocket with stints through the middle, not in the midfield all game. Setterfield, O'Brien and Kennedy should not have played any senior football all year. But most of them have played most games and played them well below AFL standard because they are all we have got.

This is how bad we are and why I can't believe people can't see it and want to blame other things. It's the worst midfield in the league with the best midfielder in the league helping cover that up.

Sure we have some players with potential who might make good players some day and as a whole the midfield has potential to be fairly good but currently this is where it's at.

If we don't manage to land a couple of quality mature midfielders this off season then we're in big trouble. It will be the thing that costs guys like Bolton and Silvagni their jobs.

You do not want to be a rebuilding club and miss a few steps, that's what has happened at North, were rebuilding ok until it came to getting in mature players.

If you expect us to magically be winning games with a midfield like that you're dreaming. A coach can't fix this, we can't fix this this season, we will get a few opportunities to win when a team doesn't challenge us physically and Essendon is a chance but the problem is and has always been mostly the players.

We need to take the next step and recruit good quality mature midfielders or it wont matter who is coaching Carlton next season.

Well said SOAP.

I sound like a broken record but do people realise Bonar is very likely ahead of where they would’ve expected him to be when they drafted him at 11 two years ago?
Disagree, and he now seems to have Hately. Shipley and Caldwell directly ahead of him for a spot.

He's almost certainly not, and you need to remember the 20% bump in TPP that happened a couple of years back. It's a slightly expensive contract for a reserves player though.

Hird wont be coaching Carlton next year.
It's incredible to me that people needed to hear that from you.
