Baghdad Bombers vs Mount Buller Demons at Abdu Prison
After 6 rounds we had lost only the one game against the Rats and we sat on top of the Sweet FA ladder. Things were going to plan, now to dispatch the Bombres. We donned our Kevlar vests and made the trip to the dry and dusty Abdu Prison. Conditions were warm however we kept our cool and held a 1 goal advantage going into the first break. The second qtr things really clicked and we opened up a 33 point lead. That was all we needed for the win as we started to rest key players. The final score hardly did justice to the complete domination we showed in the first half, masked by good coaching practices.

DEFENDER OF THE YEAR
Once again our defense was rock solid with one of the most miserly teams in the history of the Sweet FA. This was a backline that remained reasonably unchanged for most of the season and indeed from the premiership winning side of S26.

Mount Buller Demons vs Dragons FFC at Snow Dome (MOTR)
There was a reason this one was billed MOTR and it had nothing to do with The Dragons. The mighty Demons were sweeping aside all comers and the Dragons were merely a bit players in a season soon to be declared classic! The Dragons led by 2 points at the first change, the Dee’s by 6 at the main break and then the Dragons turned it back in their favour by 8 points at the last break but then that big bastard Buller battering ram rolled over the top of the hapless Dragons and steam rolled them by 26 points!

Mt Buller Demons v Coney Island Warriors @ The Snow Dome - MOTR
Yet another top billing MOTR match up featuring the juggernaut that is the Mt Buller team. With only 1 loss from 8 games it was difficult to see who could match us. The Warriors on the other hand had were looking to continue with their winning form after last week halting a 3 game losing streak. With unseasonably warm conditions on the Mount the first 3 qtrs were a real arm wrestle and the Demons went to the final break 12 points up. The Warriors came out all guns blazing in the final term to grab a 7 point lead by the 5 min mark however this just served to awaken the beast and the Demons poured on 6 goals to one from that moment on to run out eventual 24 point victors.

Las Vegas Bears vs Mount Buller Demons at The Stadium in the Sky (MOTR)
Three MOTR top billings in a row!! #unprecedented. The merchandise store at Mt Buller as well as the warehouse supplying online sales of Mt Buller apparel, mugs, stickers, Tarkyn_24 statuettes and tackle boxes had sold out and had in fact gone into 6 months backorder! Something biiiig was building. 9 games and 8 wins. The preparations, commitment and dedication of everyone involved in the Mt Buller team was coming together in a harmonious blend of winning and bedazzlement. Then it was 9 wins from 10 games when we showed the Bears who’s the boss!

Mount Buller Demons vs Gumbies FFC at Snow Dome (MOTR)
Four … yes Mt Buller has featured in four MOTR games in a row. The players are swamped by adoring fans and chased by paparazzi everywhere they go. The clubs of the Sweet FA are opening cheque books and offering insane amounts of money to anyone connected with the Demons to divulge what it is that is delivering the amazing #unprecedented success they are having. But at training and behind closed doors the core of the club, the players and coaching staff remain focussed with steely eyed determination to keep up the success. In hushed tones the playing group chant the words that have become the cadre of success that Richard_Cranium has instilled in the group…. “Just keep swimming, just keep swimming, just keep swimming” and with that, the playing group ran out onto the Snow Dome to match up against the 3rd placed Gumbies and *en lost!!!

Mount Buller Demons vs West Coast Wonders at Snow Dome

Aaahhem… Apologies for getting a little ahead of ourselves there. The loss to the Gumbies was the wake up call we needed. We were back on the track working harder than ever. A beautiful sunny day greeted us as we ran out onto the field for our clash with the #lolWonders. They had been poking along in their usual mediocre style just clinging to 8th place on the ladder. We were hell bent on atoning for our slip up last week and after a steady first qtr, where we absorbed the best the Wonders could throw at us, we upped the ante and unleashed Tarks who smashed 4 (of his eventual match winning 8 goal haul ) unanswered majors in ten minutes to set us up for another resounding win. The Wonders never did recover and we went on to demolish them by 54 points!!! Just keep swimming, just keep swimming!

Roys FFC vs Mount Buller Demons at Brunswick Junction Oval
With the win against the hapless Wonders we had secured a finals berth. It was time to taper. We couldn’t keep poking the qooty gods and expect not to get bitten. As captain I requested the team stop swimming and just float for a while, maybe a little side stroke here and there but in the main… just chill. Well the juggernaut had too much momentum despite doing our best to lay down and let the Roys have it. They led by 12 points at the first break but then the Demon awoke! It was carnage! Tarks and sausageroll went apeshit , DemonJim tackled anything that moved, cooney was of his chops, cats2rise wasn’t pandering to any wishes for mercy and @Callumns_Guns and Proper Gander were blasting away at anything a in Roys jumper. By 3 qtr time we were 46 points up. The insanity had to stop! We ran out eventual 27 point winners..

After 13 games we had won 11 for Christ sake! Something had to change. The message finally got through. Everyone stopped swimming for the day and we enjoy the loss we had to have. A very pleasant loss if I may say so. We came out doing our best to lose but still held a 2 point advantage at qtr time, (curse your ineptitude Royals) but we were not to be denied. We stepped up our shitness and went into Wonders mode. It worked!! We were 3 points down at half time. Could this really be happening? We all got in a huddle just before we ran out for the 3rd qtr with Richard_Cranium ‘s advice resonating in our brains “Just go full Furies” and we did! Bingo, down by 17 points at 3 qtr time. We managed to maintain the mediocrity and went on to lose by an impressive 14 points!!

Sin City Swamprats vs Mount Buller Demons at Underground Stadium (MOTR)

We were torn. We had unfinished business with the Rats from earlier in the season but we also had a date with defeat if we were to give ourselves the best possible chance in finals. What to do? The team approach won out in the end. We needed to lose this one and give the rats a false sense of hope coming into the finals as well as pad our stats to gain better favour from the SIM at the pointy end of the season. Things looked shakey up to half time as we all nervously endure the wrath of the coach’s spray imploring us to be more like the Gumbies. This seemed to do the trick and we allowed the Rats to run riot in the last half and grab a 15 point victory. Phew!

Round 16

Mount Buller Demons vs Fighting Furies at Snow Dome

It was pointless. We knew no matter hard we tried we could never lose this one. It was the Furies for crying out loud. Our second tier two side. With everyone sing “Just keep swimming” we rolled out onto the pristine arena that is the Snow Dome. By now the famous catch cry was resonating with the Demons fans and 75,000 Mt Buller true blue fanatics belted out “Just keep swimming”. It was pitiful to watch for the Furies fans, they never got near us. At no time did they lead throughout the match. Proper Gander was toying with them and decided to play the whole game only kicking on her left, Footypie32 tied up a hammock between the furies goal posts and slept for the entire match (other than changing ends each qtr), sante played the whole game piggy backing Oddhawk (who still got 15 touches despite being carried by Sante), FinBar19 and manangatang ate cheese and onion samboy chips for most of the game in the centre square and lion around was just, lion around. Dees by 53 points!

CAPTAINS AWARD
This award is given to the player deemed the best clubman by the captain. Whether it be by way of providing engaging banter, going the extra mile or putting a hand up to help out… it’s always noted and appreciated. As most are aware this is my last season as Mt Buller captain and I take the responsibility of ensuring the handover to a suitable new captain seriously. That is why I have no hesitation in handing the captaincy to manangatang and the reason is that he has always been there to assist me and the wider playing group, particularly this season. I have only had to ask for some help and he is all over it. So thanks Big Man! You deserve the accolade and I wish you (and us) every success in the future.

First Qualifying Final Mount Buller Demons vs Sin City Swamprats at Snow Dome (MOTR)

Had the tactic of deliberately losing games worked? The Rats had beaten us twice this season but this was the one that mattered most. Though we enjoyed a 21 point lead up until the 7th minute mark of the first qtr edgie had other ideas and banged on a couple of quick ones to get them back in it. At the first break we were in front but only by the slenderest of margins. The arm wrestle continued into the second with both sides taking the lead only to have it snatched away from them before they could truly get the upper hand. Into the 3rd and it was the Rats by 8 points at the start of the qtr and 11 by the end. This was it, this was the time for Mt Buller to don the budgie smugglers and start swimming! And we did! cats2rise snagged a cracker at the get go quickly followed by a manangatang bomb to put us within 1 point in the first couple of minutes. The Rats answered with 3 quick ones of their own and all of a sudden we were down by 25 points with 10 minutes to go. The crowd started the chant and FinBar19 , sante , Proper Gander and Tarkyn_24 anchored the last leg and we snatched the victory in the last minute by a solitary point!! We were off to a prelim!!! Who said losing doesn’t work?

Prelim

First Preliminary Final: Mount Buller Demons v Las Vegas Bears at Snow Dome

There was controversy going into this one. Cadaver had ****ed up the team sheet and gotten the Bears a 2 goal penalty before the qooty was even bounced! The Snow Dome was packed and the chant had gone up. We were primed, this was the moment we had worked all year for. Tarks and sante got us off to a good start and FinBar19 along with cats2rise chimed in to give us a 15 point lead at qtr time. We kept that momentum into the second qtr and held a 35 point lead at half time. This is where s**t got weird. Richard_Cranium decided to mix things up a bit. Instead of the tried and true method of chanting “Just keep swimming” he thought getting the Furies captain TJASTA in at half time to speak to us of the pain and torment of losing big games would motivate us to push hard and finish off the Bears. This is not the way it went. The plan backfired and we lost all confidence. Our half time lead was whittled away to just 3 points at 3 qtr time and despite desperate efforts by Tars and _Cayz_ to snatch victory in the dying minutes we went down by 16 points which , after the teamsheet penalty was applied meant we lost by 4 points. Our tails went numb, we couldn't swim no more.....We had drowned!!
