Re Cas, we’re in a slightly awkward position given Humphreys durability (or lack thereof).

400k a year for a backup (albeit someone who can now cover 3 lines) would ordinarily be bad management but we don’t have much security in the ruck. I’d actually be for us offering him well overs for 2 years. He gets paid but we retain flexibility.

Doesn’t find much of the ball.

Doesn’t kick many goals.

How do you assess the overall stats of a player who's been used in about 6 different positions by an absolute mess of a club?

If we're going to assess Martin it should be with an understanding of what role he'd likely play with us (wing/link-up player, limited rotation through back, forward and midfield) and how his skill-set suits that role. I mean, Levi is averaging less than a goal a game this season....but given he's been used down back and in the ruck it's not really an accurate reflection of how he's done when playing forward.

I will have a look if I get a chance. And maybe I should have taken my own advice and put a grin on the post to denote the humour. I usually do but the darn smileys take forever to pop up since they upgraded and I lose patience.
I have watched us play for over 50 years and am still yet to really notice the other team are out there. Except if an opposition player does something exceptionally good or dirty.
Its all about Carlton. Totally unashamedly one eyed I am while the game is on.
So while I would have seen Martin when we played them assuming he played I just didn't notice.

Can't blame you for that, mate. As someone who takes his Supercoach very seriously, I pay plenty of attention to opposition players as well as ours. Don't think Martin is a must-have, but balanced against the competition and cost for blokes like Hill and Langdon, I think he's a valid target. Should cost less, and has plenty of scope for improved output if we can settle him in a suitable role.

walsh wouldve had a crack

Yep, for his first season. Probably his second. But there's only so long you can walk upstream before you start to tire, and I think that's the issue at the Suns. Players come in full of energy and enthusiasm, and over time they get conditioned to just coasting along because that's what most of their teammates do. The ones who stick around long term are the ones happy to take home an inflated salary with minimal accountability, and others get sick and tired of the battle and move on to clubs with competitive cultures.

I actually think that’s the only way he’ll be on our list next year. Lobbe gone surely, Kreuzers continuing struggles to get on the park, TDK not being ready and Phillips.

This is the year to use picks in trades as it’s not that great a draft from all reports, we don’t have a second which is valuable if you are wanting to bring in Martin and/or Papley and I’d like to keep our early picks for next year.

At some stage sacrifices are going to need to be made, Levi is much closer to the end than the start and makes logical sense.

Maybe I'm being short-sighted or a bit unfair, but at the moment McGovern for Martin >>>> Casboult for Martin.
Hopefully he can get over whatever issues he has and pick up his game.

All of you wanting to trade levi just remember, without him we would not be in the position we are now. In an injury free world cas would still get a game because there are others that aren't up to his "career best". Why would you nurture, develop and invest resources into a player that is finally producing an elite level of football , only to turn around and trade him. Madness.

No-one is talking about trading him. He is a free agent next season and there is talk about clubs being interested in his services.
All the posts I've read have been around not begrudging him leaving, if he is offered a contract too good to refuse.

Don’t think we should relegate Cas to the 2s in 2020 just because McGovern is on 700k. I’d rather have a fit and firing Casboult roaming between the arcs and chopping out in the ruck over Gov’s 6 touches as a deep forward.

If Casboult continues his form I’d hope we reward him. It’s not as if we have a tight cap and most of the kids come out of contract around 2021/22 anyway.

We have had Curnow, Marchbank, McGovern, Kreuzer, Jones out for large chunks of the season. If most of them are fit at the same time Levi wouldn’t have been getting a game.

That’s all I’m saying, 400k + for multiple seasons as a backup is not good list management.

Isnt the story that we have gazillions of dollars to spend. How is it bad list management to spend 400K on a guy who is absolutely best 22 at the moment?

Hopefully we are in a position to just play our best 22 next year and actually challenge to make the finals. ATM Cas is ahead of McKay and MM and if they go past him that is great for us.

The way they're currently playing, I'd rather see Cas playing and Harry back in the the 2's until he can learn to keep his feet in a contest.
At the moment the opposition are concerned about his mobility and size, but he doesn't look like actually hurting them.

Even when everyone is fit, Can is becoming a genuine swing man who can pinch hit in the ruck. You try to keep a hold of them.

Yep, and Harry's set shot kicking has turned to shit as well. he has plenty to work on.

I have watched several games worth of Jack Martin footage. My thoughts are:

Good at
- Tackling pressure and effective tackles
- Kicking technique
- Repeat efforts and running to provide an option
- Aerial work

Ok at
- Getting first hands to the ball
- Contested ball work
- Work around goal

Bad at
- Decision making under pressure (prone to bombing the ball)

His disposal efficiency looks bad because his disposal is bad (under pressure).

Out in the open, with a little bit of time, he uses it very well.

He was playing fairly consistently as a midfielder, and frankly I would not continue with this.

He has the capacity to be a very damaging outside weapon, and should be the outlet option, not getting the ball.

His physique seems quite slight, I am suspicious this will not be improved upon, but based on the physique of his teammates, I have developed some hope (they all look sub-par, which indicates a conditioning team issue)

He is a very willing worker and made many repeat efforts. He often rushes into contested situations and gathers, although he is prone to misuse once acquired.

In a better team, he is likely to be much more impactful.

Good post.

Was surprised to see that 48% of his possessions this year have been contested.

Also his tacked numbers have increased from previous years.

I would be front loading a couple of our kids extensions in the next year or 2 if we cannot land a big fish in FA.

Sure Levi is a free agent and we won't get anything for him if he walks, and that only makes it less, not more, acceptable. No one is begrudging Levi looking after his own interests, but there would be a quite few supporters begrudging the club for not paying him what he's worth, particularly if other clubs see that value and readily agree to pay for it. A 'too good to refuse' offer could easily turn into a bargain deal for a shrewd club. Not recruiting Kane Lambert who was playing right under our noses for Northern was hard enough to swallow, but helping/forcing Levi, who is playing very, very well for us, out the door would be on a whole new level.

I agree with everything you say. The way he is performing, If it was up to me, I'd offer 2 years on really good coin, or the security of 3 years on a bit less.

The whole Lambert thing really gave me the shits at the time. I know we are all wannabe 'List Managers' here, but how could so many of us see what our recruitment team couldn't!!

To do that, would be like robbing Peter to pay Paul, Mckay had the best defender last week and he struggled, this allowed CAS to pop up, when they took Talia off McKay, he popped up, although missing his chances.

I’m not sure one has a good game, without the other.

He still got a 3 yr fairly good money deal from north so we should of at least got something and we didn't

In hindsight we should have got something, because he pulled his finger out. His contract was 2 years with a trigger, I remember thinking at the time that it was irresponsible by north and so did a lot of others.
