Newman will have an important role to play in this team yet and IMO is most certainly part of our premiership plan right now.

Underrated defensively and will work very nicely with Doc.

Plus he can and has played wing. Guys like Murph and Simmo will be gone in the next 2 to 3 so as long as we keep guys like Newman through that transition we'll be in a good place.

What on earth is going on at Adelaide. So many players reportedly wanting out and also players the club wants to move on.

I'll really starting to think there might be salary cap issues at play as well.

The situation there is not normal at all.
Im a big believer that things are never as good as they seem nor are they as bad as they seem. But from everything that i have seen or heard coming out of Adelaide this season, things certainly are as bad as they seem.

There seem to be some deep seeded issues bubbling away beneath the surface that are causing significant damage to the culture at that club. There are a lot of fractured relationships and nobody seems to be on the same page.

This could have a hugely negative affected going forward, or it could galvanize them. To me it seems like the former. Either way they have along road ahead of them.

I’d only be comfortable releasing Marchy of AR can get Willo on the park long term. Willo has more upside IMHO.

Can we just offer them Macreadie instead?

What do you think we would get for a player that has played 9 games since drafted and just 1 senior match in 2 years.

I really like Macreadie but he is worthless on the trade table. At best a late pick upgrade.

I always thought if push comes to shove and Swand asked for more than pick 8 for Papley due to his long contract that I'd accept pick 8 plus Macreadie for him but pick 8 plus Marchbank not sure I would be keen on.

there is a big big difference between pick 8 & Macreadie and pick 8 & Marchbank.
I have no idea why swans would want Macreadie.

I rate Marchbank very, very highly. Think he will be a real good player. So would prefer to keep him.

However, he plays in a position we are pretty well covered for and probably most afford to lose one from. Not to mention he has struggled with injury.

The problem is I think we value him higher internally than he would be externally.

A fully fit and firing Marchbank is probably a fair swap for Papley however we would be selling low so Marchbank alone probably doesn't get the deal done.

I think we have enough trade value in picks to get Papley and Martin done anyway... so at this stage no need to trade out any talent.

The rumours that one player won't speak to Pyke and everything goes through an assistant is even more disturbing.

Will be interesting how this trade period works for them. Not even the supplement saga for * had this many rumours of amount of players wanting out.

But where there is smoke there is usually fire...

Marchbank value would be at it's lowest right now. Swans probably want pick 8 and Marchbank for Papley. That seems well overs to me.

Still I appreciate the info. Will be an interesting trade period.
+ Cameron and a 2nd/3rd rounder back to us

Despite the relative abundance of decent medium/tall defenders we have, this year alone has shown that there were depth problems due to injuries. Not sure we can afford to let one the quality of Marchbank go. It's good the Swans are interested, because it shows they are keen to get a trade sorted, but we should make it happen without losing someone we really need to keep until it's absolutely necessary.

Then why extend his contract? And experience doesn't count for anything?

A few reasons.

Leadership, experience, cover (and by cover I don't mean VFL in case of injury) to ensure we aren't caught short due to injury).

Simmo got the year Daisy didn't because he's an original Blue Boy and the supporters would have lost their shit if Daisy got the extension over Simmo but he is absolutely in the twilight and may well get the conversation Daisy got at the end of next season.

But if letting Marchbank go means we do a deal not involving pick 8 and pick 8 gets us Laird or Talia, oh boy, I'd be interested.

Is anyone else worried by what * might do with picks 4 and 8? That’s a fair bit of ammunition and I don’t see them hitting the draft that hard. Wonder who they’re after?

What I think * will do with picks 4 & 8 is sell their future for more mature talent that won't be enough to overcome the fact that players like Matt Guelfi, Tom Bellchambers, Mitch Brown and Shaun McKernan each played at least 15 matches this year!!!

I'd certainly like to keep Marchy.

Have a feeling if we successfully make #17, he'll be a big part of it. Injuries permitting. Strikes me as a player who would be intercept marking like an absolute boss on the Big Day.

I also think * will use their draft capital to recruit some more outside mids and HFFs.....

Simmo also didn't get on the goon mid season. Excellent in his match preparation and recovery. Role model to the younger players.

Yep that's true, always have to look at the big picture with trades rather than each one in isolation. We've certainly learnt that since SOS took over. It's been one of the biggest differences between his strategic management of the draft and trade periods compared to predecessors.

Anyone else of the opinion that we can actually afford to lose Marchbank? I reckon we're extremely well stocked for defensive talls. Already have Weiters, Jones, Plow locked in for spots down there. I reckon if we lost Marchy then it opens a spot for JSOS to play down back, or it may open the door for Macreadie so we can actually see what he's made of.

Fact is we're thin on small fwds, rich with defensive talls, and if losing Marchy means we can get Papley and keep pick 8 for someone else then I'm all for it.
