Is there any news on Casboult?
There seems to be a bit of confusion as whether the trigger clause has been activated or if it was automatic.
Is he contracted for next year or still a free agent?

From all the comments on contracts recently, it seems there is no such thing as an automatic extension (unlike most other sports in the world).

Has to be agreed upon by both parties when up for extension

He met his extension trigger and is contracted for 2020. Of course, he or the club may decide to explore a trade if a desirable one comes up.

I assume he wants a longer deal for security for himself and his young family.

Butler's kicked a couple for The Tigers v The Borough.

Not his biggest fan, but it seems like he is Ikon Park bound, so I will try learn to like him (eventually :) l

This was from a couple of weeks ago:

When Casboult played the Cats in Round 23, it was his 30th game of his two-year deal — the number needed to reach a clause in his contract to trigger another season at the Blues in 2020.

“Of course if he’d missed that trigger and played 29 games, he’d be an unrestricted free agent — and there’d be a lot of clubs out there saying ‘we could do with this bloke’.”

So it would seem he is contracted for next year?

I didn’t include McGovern deliberately.

He’s behind McKay and Curnow for pure forward spots.

Casboult fills the third role. He has simply played better this year as well and is more versatile - can play ruck, back and forward. Casboult as third tall means McKay can stay forward which helps him too. JSOS was absolutely critical to our structure as a table-setter and the 3 quicks are necessary for forward pressure.

There’s ways you can get McGovern in - dropping McKay, playing the extra tall defender, etc. I just don’t think he’s worth it. 8 disposals, 1.3 goals and 1.5 tackles from a forward who is in their prime is mediocre stuff, particularly when they don’t really rotate into another position on the ground and have fitness/weight issues. McGovern takes flashy grabs but is in all other respects a good backup and nothing more...

You're way off.

Aside from McGovern clearly being amongst the first 3 or 4 forwards picked on ability and role, the coach loves him. He'll play every game when fit.
If we do get Papley, the forwardline will be something like this:

HF: McGovern, McKay, Silvagni
FF: Papley, Curnow, Cunningham

Will depend if we like Martin as a forward or a mid as to who gets the 7th forward spot.

I would take SPP. Reckon he’s still got a lot to prove if he dedicates himself to the team

Agreed. Limited skill & precision but definitely has some good qualities that if used properly could make him an effective player. Only young. Wouldn’t pay much for him though.

Gov can switch down back when required as well, which makes him an invaluable asset.

As long as he lays off the Mickey D and Hungry Jacks diet and maintains a good fitness base, he will be a great player for us.

I remember reading that but hasn't there been recent reports to say he has not triggered the extension and is still an unrestricted free agent?

I got the impression that it was triggered when he played game 30, but he may want to be traded if somewhere will offer him a 2 year deal?

Though i could be wrong.

..isn't it just a clause in the contract that has already been agreed on, so once the conditions are met, it is triggered?
So it happens automatically, i'd imagine?
That is what I thought too, until a recent article saying the trigger had not been activated. Others have posted information saying that both parties have to agree to the extension.
I don't think anyone knows for sure, there has been conflicting information.
