I don’t like the notion of trading away next years First on top of this years first for the targets we are looking at, even if we say got Hawks future first back. I hate the thought of going through another season like this one, especially if we start the season poorly yet again. I’m just not confident enough in our progress yet to be trading away a future first. It’s a much easier proposition for teams like Geelong and West Coast.
I understand completely why we should be nervous about this. How long can we look at building through the draft or using draft position for trading what we need.
I have no idea if the time is right but if SOS and the team think it’s right to jump off and take a risk to get players we need in the right positions now then let’s go.
The better we are in 2020 minimises our risk with next years first. Maybe next year Hawthorn is our first pick slide in the draft.
Would be nice to death ride that bunch of d***h**ds.

In 7 years time after Papley and Martin have played over 100 games for us, will it matter whether we payed pick 2-3 picks over for Either player?

In those 7 years I would expect to play finals 5 times and be a serious challenger in several.

If either player improves after crossing to us, we will be the club better off.
Same deal with Kelly. Huge cost in picks but if they stay up top and win another flag (or more), will it really matter?

Certainly over the past 20 years overall, we have definitely failed to add u18 talent. Sometimes it was because we ID'd the wrong U18 yo's and sometimes it was because we went after big fish eg Judd , Brock and the result is a paucity of mid aged talent now.

But SOS has turned around our underage problem and now has to try to rectify our mid aged hole. He has tried to do this over the past few years by using non premium cast offs and that is a low hit % game . Now he has the relative luxury of being able to target for need and to use premium picks to attract EXACTLY the right players that we need. Papley and Martin fit into this category perfectly and we should not begrudge paying slight premium to bring Papley in.

We cant keep adding Papley's at the expense of younger players, but for this year and possibly the next, we should have no problem.
In assessing this strategy we should always keep in mind that SOS effectively pulled another young player pick forward from this year into last years draft in the form of Stocker. Stocker should be considered our premium 2019 draftee and the pick 9 should be considered a free hit. If that is Papley then so be it. He has my vote.

Yeah, good point about Stocker :thumbsu: I never thought of it like that.

We should take a chance on Aish.

I love how team orientated and unselfish he is.

there was a post today in the Sydney forum that Papley has packed up all the stuff in his place and isn’t planning on returning.

I’m not saying to ask his partner if that’s legit info or not but....

Love their music, but it's a long time since their post-punk electronica revolution.

Anyway, looking forward to a big Blue Monday tomorrow!

If we land Betts, Papley and Martin it will be like a bizarre love triangle at Princes Park, the Atmosphere will be electric, there should be a big Ceremony.

That's simply begging the question, though, is it not? The point is not how many games they play for us and whether we make the finals, the argument is the best way to get to number 17. We are certainly still vulnerable to having our depth challenged, if we make these trades or not, with question marks against a few of our recent draftees and with Murphy, Simpson and a few others soon on the way out. I don't mind giving up a few high draft picks at this stage for the right player but what I object to is multiple draft pick trades that leave us especially vulnerable to injury and key players not developing like we need them to. We need to keep blooding players for the club to function properly. Perhaps our unyielding stance towards Gibbs, that actually came to fruition a year too late, has come back to bite us on the bum.

If we are talking multiple picks then I agree, but if we end up offering 9 and even a sweetener that brings the trade down to 6-7 for Papley, in 4 years, will it matter?
If we have to upgrade a future 2nd with a 3rd, if Martin gets back to his form 3 seasons ago, will it matter?

Adelaide were called crazy years ago for offering Betts $600,000 a few years later and it was a bargain, Charlie Cameron was considered overs, 2 years later he’s All Australian.

Whilst I’m a fan of hagglin, I wouldn’t walk away less we were a long away apart in value.

Just got my New Oder tickets for next March, after being very disappointed with Peter Hook 2 years ago, I can’t wait

Now your talking my language.. I last saw them at FutureMusic Festival a few years back in 2012 They weren't too bad.
I saw them at the Reading Music Festival back in 93 and at the BDO in 2003 (if I remember correctly).

By far, my favourite band.

I was doing some Instagram stalking today.

Eddie Betts had has last stop on his book tour at Norwood arts centre. Which has been ongoing for the last 2 weeks. (Which is why I believe this wasn’t done last week, Carlton is going to want the feel good photo) He is obviously now available for a photo shoot & press conference at Princes Park.

Assuming he spent the night in Adelaide & he doesn’t want to rush in the morning (Tough with kids) and the AFL Virgin contract, I’m tipping a 130pm press conference and a lodgement just before that. That would mean the 935am out of Adelaide arriving at Tulla at 1125, then giving him a couple of hours before the announcement.

So every get ready around 130pm

fair point, but I suspect that SOS & Co are already strategising next year and have some tradeable players in mind. If we have a good year next year, there may very well be some tradeable assets that can be let go in order to get us back into the first round
