Predicting 113 pages today.

1 more page to go tonight to hit my prediction this morning although it looks like i under-estimated it somewhat =/

Anyway...

I'm feeling really disappointed like everyone else however there's a few things to consider before we really determine whether it's been a good/bad trade period.

First is that if we pick up Martin for nothing in the PSD then that is an absolutely massive win considering most people were happy giving up a future 2nd for him. Look at that in isolation and we got 1 of our main targets for absolute peanuts!! Of course we won't know this for 5-6 week hence why we are nervous about this outcome until it happens. If it doesn't, then yes we've definitely had a very poor trade period. If it does, to me that still leaves us in a pretty good position as it allows our future 2nd to be used as a bargaining tool next year rather than spending it... hence Jack Martin for free!

Next if we look at our main target in Papley, which let's be honest is what we are all mostly upset about... Before today half of this board said 9 is overs and the other said 9 is Paps worth. Who knows what our best offer was but i imagine we'll find out in the coming days and i would expect we would have been willing to pay whatever the price was, even if it was just pick 9 in isolation. Given Sydney were dangling 9 to Essendon for days, that to me indicates they were happy with the deal we'd put forward to them. Of course in not getting Daniher, i think they've turned around to us and re-negged on a previously agreed deal about us getting Paps even if they didn't get Daniher. This would explain SOS' demeanor and some of the ITK comments around us being stitched up. Did we pony up enough to get it over the line, i think we did and had it over the line only for Sydney's pride to get in the way late in the piece.

Did we put all our eggs in the one basket? Possibly, but let's be honest, who else of note was available that we were keen on? Butler? I don't think too many wanted him. Langdon? Tomlinson? Ah Chee? Bruce? Keath? We didn't want any of these players The only player of value that we could have been interested in was Hill. We could just as easily get Sam Gray from port adelaide as a delisted free agent if we wanted depth in the small forward position. Crouch or Wines or Viney or Gaff? Lets be honest, they weren't really available. So the notion of we could have done better with pick 9 is somewhat true until you really consider that no-one we actually would have wanted was available and worth the pick.

And with pick trades still available for a while longer, i would be interested to see if we trade out 9 for a future first so we are stock-piled for picks next year to make a play at someone that would require 2 first round picks for. We don't need any young draftees this year so lets set ourselves up with double firsts next year so teams know we are serious.

So all in all i'm disappointed as Papley would have made such a big difference but i'll still be happy if we get Martin in the PSD knowing that likely Paps was pulled from us at the last minute and there were no other players worth the pick available.

I'll be interested to see how both the clubs that held their players to contract go next year.

Gibbs and Kelly did ok, but I get the feeling Joe will be especially pissed since this whole thing has just bought more attention to him.

I also remember reading an article where Papley said he considered retiring this year because he was so unhappy at Sydney, hope he isn't lost to the game completely.

At present, you are probably correct: Papley is better then Martin as it stands right now

But, I believe Martin has a much much higher ceiling. In fact, most folks do. In the right team, with the right coach he could be anything. Personally, I have always envisaged him as a goal kicking winger
Martin is 99 games into his career and I for one believe his best football (and his best football is truly excellent) is still very much in front of him

Its one of those speculative calls that's worth a gamble. If he wanted to come home, I would have him at West coast. Tommorow.

Do you still trade based on potential 100 games into a career? Surely clubs take that sort of risk for 18 year olds with the junior pedigree, not 25 year olds living off that junior pedigree? It would be akin to Port Adelaide trading Pick 9 for Jack Watts because he was a number one draft pick 8 years prior.

Absolutely abysmal.

We could have had Bonar and Butler late in the day.

We now have only an ageing Eddie to add to the list.

Relying on natural improvement when every single other team is improving their list or already better than us a road to nowhere.
Who do Bonar and butler push out of our side mate? We have that many talented players on our list we don’t need these types.

Can’t say it was t a disappointing trade period but I do t blame our recruitment team.
How can Achee go for peanuts and then they want to play hardball with a Martin?...
Following their latest handout, it seemed as though they were intent on making it clear that they wouldn’t be accomodating of players wanting out. Making that stand against a tall poppy such as SOS might have been appealing; as silly as that seems, consider their approach in the AhChe trade.

it seems with PSD stuff if the club approached players manager who says he’s not interested in going there then they pass

Melbourne may not even want to use a PSD pick. Nor Gold Coast.
Someone said before, doubtful a club will pay so much for 1 year when he doesn't agree in principle to an extension.

I reckon there’s a fair chance we’ll take Martin in the ND with one of our later picks. That would save face somewhat. He’s the one I really want.

Not that fussed about Papley. Pick 9 was always too much and consider this: both he and Betts kicked 37 this year.
He won't nominate for national draft

I love sos and think he’s done an outstanding job at the club. But he’s mucked this one up. He should have relented and given up pick 9 for papley with no picks coming back and taken Martin in the PSD.
Swans said if Daniher didn't arrive, Papley wasn't leaving. We had no hand!

Yes I don’t accept that the two deals were ‘inextricably linked’ as the media and the club have stated.

This is only speculation, but it’s my view that the reason they traded for Taylor was that he was a replacement for Papley.

Okay, it's opinion. Was just checking I hadn't missed something.

2hours post melting began, I think the boards getting better at this whole melting thing... Much better than previous melt worthy occasions.. kinda.
I must admit my minor implosion has turned into an outtie again. Besides We got Eddie back. That was worth the whole trade period itself.

Look forward to creaming for the next 12 months about Whitfield and Wines coming only to be left standing at the alter....again.

FFS.

Are the football gods cursing us?

How can teams like Melbourne and St Kilda get who they want and it always seems so hard for us?

Again let me stress this is not our recruitment teams fault but it’s just weird.

Gil stepping onin with Coggs, Dodo screwing us with Daniher so we couldnt look elsewhere .... Gold Coast stupid value of Martin.

Honestly I’m just gutted for all the time I spent the last few weeks keeping up to date with everything and then this happens.

ITKs thanks for the updates not blaming any of you. Will be interested to hear your take on everything. Looks like we will have a few scores to settle in the future. SOS has a damn long memory.

Hope we take the pick of the draft with 9 and shove it up all the arses!
With any luck pick nine turns into the next Robbie Gray and all will good and right in the world.
