The onus is on the Setterfields, Dows, SPS' etc to really step up and alleviate the pressure on him.

I feel that SPS is destined for the Yarran role of yesteryear and a now vacant Thomas position on the field.

Setterfield, Curnow and Walsh are still two good lads to have in the middle. Gibbons and I’d hope Deluca can provide respite on rotation. Dow is the one who needs to put on some size and come out of his second year blues. Then Murphy, Fisher, O’Brien and hopefully Cunningham for some outside capability.
Hope they have some good tackling coaches come in during the pre season.. a few slipped tackles cost us big time in the close contests this year.

Wines approaches the club via his management about a trade. We tell him we “thanks but no thanks” we don’t have the currency to trade for you because we’ve made two players publicly nominate us and we need the picks for those deals.

We fail to get either deal done AND we forgoe getting Wines who IMHO would have improved us no end.

Now wines has been burnt.

Papley has been burnt

Martin probably burnt.

If SOS wasn’t best mates with our President I’d suggest he’d be out the door.

Really bad look on the club. I don’t buy the whole “sos stood firm and didn’t bend over” rubbish.

If you have a need, you get it done . Look at west coast, look at Geelong.

You mean like last year, when geelong held kelly to his contract despite having a legitimate reason for leaving with his children needing special care? You should look hard at your own advice..... doors that way ----->

Right. Disappeared after that to go cool off. Read some storries to the little one and put her to bed.

25 pages behind now.

After cooling off I still think this trade period is a disaster and poorly managed.

The plan was to hit the draft for a few years then trade for needs. We were pretty open this year was trading for needs.

Easy to say now "Oh Papley was always going to be hard if Daniher didn't move"... well where's our contingancy plan? Butler was there for the taking.

Yes Martin we still might pick up in the pre season draft. That could end up being a win... but it's definitely not gone to plan.

Wines comes to us asking for a trade? Surely if we knew how hard and unlikey Papley was going to he we try get that over the line.

In the end we added Betts (great romance but fills no need long term) and sideways traded a backup ruckman.

There's no sugar coating it. Shocker of a trade period. I'm sure the club are spewing internally!
Wines wasn't available

So in essence we'll be paying a mill next year for a player that was playing NEAFL footy this year .
Martin is not a player we should be doing this with imo .
Mate it will be exactly the same money over the 4 years that we already agreed with him.

Instead of 600k a year for 4 years, it will be something like:

Year 1: $1,000,000
Year 2: $500,000
Year 3: $450,000
Year 4: $450,000

I love sos and think he’s done an outstanding job at the club. But he’s mucked this one up. He should have relented and given up pick 9 for papley with no picks coming back and taken Martin in the PSD.

Dodoro ****ed it up for us, if he had gone out and said we are not trading Daniher his intention the whole time. Sydney could say we are not trading Papley and then we could bring in Ollie Wines and Dan Butler. Tried to get the Jack Martin deal over the line and if not take him in the PSD like we will later. We can only call this trade period a failure, if we fail to get Jack Martin in the PSD. If we do it is a win as we offered next years 2nd and 3rd, instead we got him for free.

I’m a lifelong Carlton supporter and I’ve been a Suns member for 6 years due to location so I’ve seen a lot of Jack Martin. But I have bitten my tongue (well keyboard) while this trade period has played out so I’m now going to give my honest appraisal of what has just occurred.

He was my favourite player early on based on a few very good games in the early years because he had amazing potential.

However .... he has consistently played about 4 decent games per year and teases with his potential, then goes missing for weeks at a time where he just seemed like he wasn’t interested at all, wouldn’t chase, tackle, or put his head over the ball to make a contest.

He is such a conditional player and chooses when to have a go and when he just can’t give a toss.

On numerous occasions this year I said that the Suns just needed to trade him while he still had some currency because he was playing like someone who clearly didn’t care and didn’t want to be at the club. I jokingly said to my wife that they can piss him off as long as he didn’t end up at Carlton ... then he nominated us and I just shook my head and said “for goodness sake I hope we don’t give up too much for him”.

What happened with Martin today is a very good outcome.
He is not worth a 1st round pick
He is not worth sliding back in the first round, and IMO ... (and in the case of any Suns players, for once I think my opinion counts for something) ...
He isn’t worth a 2nd round pick under 30

So SOS was 100% right not to be bent over on the Martin deal and if he plays another season like this year, he’d be a 4th rounder at best next year because of his give a toss attitude.

This is why GCS surely couldn’t entertain redrafting him in the PSD because they can’t afford to bring him back against his wishes on decent money, just to put up mediocre performances and drag down the club while they’re trying to improve their culture.

They had to make a stand, but it won’t help them in the end. Unfortunately we were in the breach on the occasion that they decided to do so. They have definitely put their club before the player, who I suspect will come out and say (via his manager) that he would rather sit out of footy that return to the Suns after what has occurred.

If we get him in the PSD fine. But SOS & Co. did the right thing today

As for Papley .... what can you do? He is contracted and Swans didn’t want to play ball.

We haven’t compromised by going after lesser quality targets and we haven’t given away the farm for the ones we wanted.

Sydney didn’t want to do Papley at all if Danniher wasn’t coming in. How can he get something that’s not available

Why do you think Sydney would accept pick 9, given Bombers weren’t going to give up Daniher?
