Not so sure, Saints get Hill done and all their targets, going in to next year, they can go to players and point to a track record, make a commitment to us and we will get it done. Same with WC with Kelly.

It’s very hard as we don’t know our final offer to Sydney, but reading between the lines, we didn’t even offer pick 9 on its own.

I hate this crap, with people saying Papley wasn’t available, if he wasn’t available, why did SOS spend 10 days on trying to get him.

Posters for years have said/joked SOS doesn’t overpay, well good luck trying to land big players in the future.

You're good for a laugh in the morning, just watch you don't slip on the wet ground below you :'(

Start the discussions early enough and test the waters. Plenty of players we never really made a concerted effort to bring through. Gave up on Butler and Ellis and focused on the main 2 targets. That's fine assuming you get both. Getting 1 then you're still missing out. Getting none and it can't be seen as a good player movement period.

Ellis was a free agent, would have had to commit before the trade period, he wasn't a "fallback" option.

Butler...eh. Would rather draft a kid. Small forwards can come in from day one in most cases (Higgins, Rozee, Rioli, Butters, Duursma, Hill, Cameron, Answerth, Rayner, Stephenson, Pettruccelle etc in the last two years).

At this stage, you're right, it's not a "good" player movement period in that we didn't get a big name to improve our list exponentially. But we didn't lose anyone of note, made some marginal improvements in our ruck department (in personnel and balance), brought Eddie home who addresses an immediate need on-field and adds heaps off it, and are still a decent chance of getting Jack Martin through the door. It's not a bad off season, and our list has more natural growth in it than most.

The new rumour re GC's intentions not to redraft Martin does make practical sense. GC can afford to send a message because they don't need the picks but equally don't need a disgruntled player who wasn't in their best 22 by the end of the year. Not to mention the risk of enraging the AFLPA.

Well of course we would Charlie is 22 yrs old and 4 yrs from free agency whereas Daniher is 25 injury prone and a year out from FA .
Essendon had a massive opportunity to cash in on Daniher who will most likely leave at the end of next year and finally canvass their biggest team issue inside midfielders .
But they didn't because they recruited Shiel last year and had to be seen to be still trying to win a premiership which we all know won't happen after landing Shiel for a hefty price .
Just Essendon and Dodoro chest beating as they do each trade period whilst at the same time making a farce of the system that is the trade period .

Dodoro shits me as much as any other Essendon representative but he only gives a shit about Essendon, no-one else.

He'll back his club in to get Daniher and Fantasia back on board.

It doesn’t make sense to me but there you go.

Do we not have any other draft picks or rookie picks?

I highly doubt we pick a small fwd with pick 9
A player like Flanders will play HFF first few years. And may end up being a 70/30 fwd/mid. I'd be surprised if we draft anything but a HFF/HBF that can go through the midfield with our pick

I’m seeing KohPhi’s serious side this morning. Insightful commentary on ITKs, the BOM and now this. I’m blaming an alien abduction.

My understanding is that SOS did not offer pick#9 for Papley. When asked the question on TV he said in response: " it ( pick#9) was part of the total offer" so in Carlton's opinion Papley was not worth pick#9 to Carlton - SOS wanted something back...

Well we've now got pick#9 to use in the draft.

My only contributions during this whole thing is to pass on info from another forum put forward by those in the know, and the only contribution I will make to this collective bed-shitting relates to them as well.

These guys know stuff, hear stuff, are genuine, and have proven their cred time and time again. They don't deserve to be potted by a bunch of keyboard warriors who wait months/years to emerge from the shadows just because they didn't get the Christmas presents they wanted.

Some of the best have already been lost due to this very thing, and don't be surprised if next year no-one comes forward with any mail because they know their only reward will be to get shit on by a bunch of entitled nobodies.

Clearly the latest influx of nuffies are right: SOS failed.
Should have given Charlie to the Scum so they could let Daniher go, and then pay overs for Papley.
Throw in Walsh and a first rounder for Martin.

Cop it up the tailpipe to get the deals done at all costs, right? Otherwise we failed?
FFS.

Blow ins can GTFO again. See yaz this time next year...

I’ll bite champa, there in now a month until the draft, this means a whole month where clubs can get into Martin’s ear, such as the bulldogs who he had considered offers from, let’s say the bulldogs say nominate for the draft and we’ll take you at pick x, you can come play in a team that has a genuine chance to win the flag or you can go to Carlton and sit middle of the table, we probably promised him a forward line of McKay, curnow, guts, Papley and Betts along with him, now Papley is gone he probably cops the best small defender, meaning his output isn’t as damaging, where does our major improvement come from? Pick 9, a speculative pick in what’s considered a fairly weak draft? Doc comes back but is coming off two reco’s, everyone here has excepted trash for years and this is why we are where we are, like Brisbane with Neale they overpaid and they reaped the rewards finishing top 4, we failed to do so with Papley and now we will sit middle of the table with the great outfits like Melbourne, north, freo and Essendon, sounds like a grand old time to me...

Say our next year's second and third rounder are picks 25 & 43, that's a DVI of pick 13. Package that up with some of their AFL handouts and they could move into the top 5-10. Instead they'll lose him for nothing. Bizarre.

Tom Harley said this morning that Swans offered 5 and 9. Sounds like they were accepting our offer.
